You may have been wondering how we brought Stonehenge, the prehistoric megalithic structure located on Salisbury Plain in England, to life right here in BC.

Well, in addition to over 400 unique artifacts on display that help to share the stories of the people of Stonehenge, our talented in-house exhibits team also created a specialized entryway that was fitting for such a monumental exhibition.

The entryway is an 80% scale replica of part of Stonehenge itself, standing at 12 feet tall and constructed out of an integral plywood structure covered in lightweight EPS foam and stucco. It took a lot of hard work to make the vision a reality, and we think you'll agree - it was worth it!

Why only 80% you might ask? It was so the structure could fit in the museum's freight elevator and move from the workshop to the exhibition space.

Come and check it out for yourself and be transported to another time and place. Stonehenge is on now until January 5, 2025.

Discovered in rocks of the ancient Ediacaran Period near Mount Robson BC, these fossilized remains represent the oldest known life-form in our province, around an incredible 550 million years ago.

The Miettia creature lived in the ocean off the coast of ancient North America at the time the continent ended at the BC-Alberta border. At this time, animals had yet to evolve hard body parts, such as shells. It is not known what kind of creature this was, or whether perhaps it was even a plant or trace left by an animal with different form.

We're still constantly making discoveries and learning about life in BC millions and millions of years ago, how incredible is that? 🤯

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day to honour and celebrate the history, resilience and culture of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

Five years ago, in the summer of 2019, the Royal BC Museum held the first iteration of the Indigenous Summer Arts Studio. This program was a revitalization of the carving studio operated in Thunderbird Park from 1952 to 2008. Each week showcased different featured artists and media, such as beadwork, carving, painting and cedar weaving.

The Indigenous Summer Arts Studio provided a space for Indigenous artists to learn from one another and share their work, talents and cultures with the public. Providing these opportunities for cultural exchanges was the core of this program.

Due to COVID-19, we were unable to host this program in subsequent summers. However, we have continued to find opportunities to share these artists’ talents.

In the summer of 2021, we began filming interviews and demonstrations with previous artist participants. Videos covered topics such as Métis beadwork, native plants, drum-making and more. While we know nothing can replace face-to-face interactions and conversations with artists, these videos will help you learn from Indigenous artists in new ways and provide a greater understanding of Indigenous culture as you witness it thriving today.

If you're on the traditional territory of lək̓ʷəŋən people tomorrow, stop by the museum between 10 AM - 4 PM for the Indigenous Artist Market.

Our Story

The Royal BC Museum and Archives is one of the world’s foremost cultural institutions. The museum was founded in 1886; the archives in 1894. In 2003 these two organizations integrated to become British Columbia's combined provincial museum and archives, collecting artifacts, documents and specimens of BC's natural and human history, safeguarding them for the future, and sharing them with the world.

Through research and education, we strive to broaden understanding about our province and inspire curiosity and wonder. We are passionate about sharing British Columbia's story with the millions of visitors who walk through our doors and explore our web site each year.

Our archives, exhibits and galleries change and grow as our understanding grows, and we endeavour to share our knowledge in original and exciting ways.
