📣We are excited to announce that the Footprints 2.0 database was launched yesterday by our partners at the TJWG: Transitional Justice Working Group 전환기 정의 워킹그룹's International Conference on “Combating North Korea’s crime of enforced disappearances”.
🚀Footprints is a joint civil society initiative designed to document and publish detailed information on arbitrary detention, abduction, and enforced disappearances committed in and by North Korea. This project covers the stories of victims and perpetrators, proceedings to seek redress, relevant human rights instruments, and North Korean resources.
🌟The collaboration between HURIDOCS and TJWG included an overhaul of the database with a comprehensive data clean-up, automatic translation from Korean to English, the migration of nearly 100,000 historical victim records, and newly designed data visualisation pages. These enhancements make the database more user-friendly and informative, bringing almost 100,000 crucial stories to light.

⌛ to the Uwazi inception workshop, in Kenya! 🌍
✨In Swahili, Uwazi means “openness,” and it is based on this principle that the tool was born to transform the way human rights defenders manage vast amounts of crucial data. With the aim of creating a “Case Law Analyser for All”, HURIDOCS convened an in-depth and collaborative consultation with a wide range of prominent human rights actors. In September 2015, representatives from 21 organisations including Kenya Law, ICJ Kenya, Kituo Cha Sheria-Legal Advice Centre, African Centre for Open Governance, Katiba Institute- KI Official, Cleen Foundation, Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria, Southern African Legal Information Institute, and African Legal Information Institute met at the beautiful Lake Naivasha to brainstorm on the development of a tool to better manage, publish and share knowledge. The inception workshop was co-funded by the Public International Law & Policy Group - Netherlands Office and the development of Uwazi was initially supported by the MacArthur Foundation.
🚀Uwazi was officially launched in 2017 and quickly evolved beyond a simple document management tool. Today it is helping human rights defenders, activists, lawyers, researchers, archivists and others to highlight, tag, organise, and relate various types of information—from text documents to multimedia files and geolocation points.
➡️Nine years later, Uwazi truly symbolises openness and empowers the changemakers using it to make a positive difference in the world!
