Strengthening sustainability in university curricula sounds like your next challenge?

Universities and higher education institutions play a crucial role in fostering sustainability in our society and economy. In a recent publication, WWF evaluated current sustainability efforts in Switzerland’s higher education landscape. They concluded that especially in teaching and research more ambitious commitments to include sustainable development are needed. As part of a rootlinks student team, you will tackle this challenge to provide WWF with strategic insights into how course directors and lecturers can be won over and how the change towards a stronger focus on sustainable development can succeed in as many courses as possible.

This is one of the five challenges rootlinks offers to students this semester.

[How can effective communication and continued learning in the city of Zurich's energy advisory service for homeowners become more impactful?]

This was the challenge this team was working on the past semester!

For the City of Zurich to reach its net-zero ambitions, thousands of fossil fuel heating systems need to be replaced and building insulations renovated. The City offers an energy advisory service for house owners to support them in this process. To make this advisory service as impactful as possible, knowledge management is key: a variety of knowledge needs to be shared and documented among stakeholders, communication processes have to be effective, and learnings should be implemented to continuously improve the services.

The rootlinks team tackled this challenge by developing a knowledge management strategy in close collaboration with the responsible people at the City's Gesundheits- und Umweltdepartement.

Do you want to be like these cool people? The team comprising of these 5 motivated people, worked with Inter Comestibles (www.intercomestibles.ch) to look out for solutions to reduce the climate impact of beverage distribution, such that their competitiveness is maintained. Strategy, techno-economic analysis, and regulatory aspects were at the core of this interdisciplinary challenge.

We need your help to make the mobility behavior of members of the five Zurich universities more sustainable!

As part of the challenge they are tackling, one of the rootlinks teams wants to better understand people’s current mobility behavior and attitude towards digital solutions. They prepared a 10 minute online-survey for students, professors and staff from ETH Zürich, Universität Zürich, PHZH Pädagogische Hochschule Zürich, ZHdK Zürcher Hochschule der Künste and ZHAW Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften. Two weeks ago we had our first kick-off weekend! All the new rootlinkers met each other (online) for the very first time and had the opportunity not only to get to know each other but also our challenge partners. From the mini challenge Ediblezurich to morning yoga on Sunday, we’ve had it all! And with some easy going get together via gathertown it almost felt like meeting in real life.
