Philip Lasser’s work “The Art of Memory: Twelve Preludes for Solo Piano in descending chromatic order from E to F” will have its NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE at Newport Classical by pianist Anton Mejias on October 18, 2024 ✨

Lasser will also take part in a pre-concert talk at Emmanuel Church on October 18 beginning at 6:30PM. The pre-concert talk is free and open to all members of the public with registration for the event.

Composer Philip Lasser says: “My Preludes do not simply quote material from previous ones, rather past materials become interwoven and blended with the newer material in each new Prelude. A slow, cumulative sense of the past emerges until we reach the Twelfth Prelude where, as in life, we remember the past as we now have come to know it; in flavors, suggestions, vague emotions and faded images rather than exact facts and events.”

The piece was co-commissioned by Newport Classical and Dresdner Musikfestspiele.

The German-Colombian conductor Anna Handler has been performing on stages and in concert halls around the world since her 2022 Salzburg Festival debut.

She has worked with renowned soloists including Barbara Hannigan, Okka von der Demerau, Sabine Meyer and Yo-Yo Ma.

Previously, Handler worked as an assistant to esteemed conductors such as Kirill Petrenko, including conducting the incidental music from Mazeppa with the Berliner Philharmoniker at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. At the Bayerische Staatsoper, she took over the musical direction of the production Eva und Adam, which premiered at the 2019 Munich Opera Festival.

Handler received the Rising Star Award from the European Cultural Foundation Europamusicale and is a scholarship holder of the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben. She was also awarded the Maria Ladenburger Prize for Music in cooperation with WDR, the Cusanuswerk Foundation and Deutsche Grammophon - DG. She was the first conductor ever to receive the prestigious Kovner Fellowship during her Master’s Degree studies at The Juilliard School.
