What if you had to flee your country?

Olad Jama Karshe fled Somalia 10 years ago and now lives in Germany. However, even arriving in a safe country wasn't easy. "The first three years were so hard," he recalls. He missed his family back home and was placed in a refugee center in Germany. "It felt like a small prison," he said.

But things changed for the better after his asylum request was granted. He moved to the small German town of Diemelstadt, which has welcomed hundreds of refugees. He met his future wife and they started their own family. "I already feel a bit like a resident of Diemelstadt. I am happy to live here," he told DW. He is one of approximately 3 million refugees currently living in Germany.

Stories like Olad's and those of millions of other refugees are commemorated on today's World Refugee Day, an international day designated by the United Nations to honor people fleeing violence around the globe. It is observed each year on June 20 and "celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution," according to the UN.
