Breaking News: Researchers have discovered a novel role for dopamine… and it may not come as a surprise for many of you.

For years, I’ve been engrossed in studying the relationship between the body, movement, and emotionally mediated illnesses like anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and PTSD.

Dopamine is a neuromodulator, a type of neurotransmitter that affects the behavior of other neurotransmitters. In popular culture, there exists a longstanding assumption that most dopamine neurons respond to reward-related cues. Recently, that assumption has expanded to include motivation as well.

In the study, which was published in early August of 2023 in the prestigious journal Nature, two thirds of the dopamine neurons responded with avoidant behavior (to aversive stimuli) or approach behavior (to rewards). But what about the other third?

Researchers discovered a new specific subtype of dopamine neuron located exactly where neurons first begin to degrade in Parkinson’s Disease.

What’s more, this neuron subtype does not become active in response to reward or motivation, but when the body moves.

This is huge news.

Dopamine controls not just reward and motivation, but movement. This explains why Parkinson’s Disease involves the loss of dopamine neurons and depression, yet also impacts the body’s movement.

To read the full piece and its implications for depression, head over to my Substack.

“Investigations into the mechanisms through which taurine supplementation improved healthy lifespan revealed that taurine positively affected several hallmarks of aging, including cellular senescence, DNA damage and inflammaging,” said Sharma.

Inflammaging refers to the chronic, low-grade inflammation associated with advancing age."

"The researchers found that during the first two years of OC use, there was an increased rate of depression compared with women who’d never used OCs. In terms of age, the data showed that women who began using OCs as teenagers had a 130% higher incidence of depressive symptoms. Among adult women, the corresponding increase was 92%."

Comes as no surprise...massive social experiment with undoubtedly some benefits, but some negatives.

Yoga mode at SHA Wellness Clinic. Ever since I started teaching yoga, meditation, mindfulness and pranayama at this high end clinic, I have taken time out from teaching group classes. I try to do “karma yoga” by sending iinquiries to other local teachers. Karma Yoga is a big part of the yogic path. Maybe one day I will start another group class….

If there is one thing that can make your life wither grey or rosey, it’s social media. I have some strict polices around it. Not a platform for politics, follow people who make me laugh, don’t argue and let it inspire. Used this way, it’s great fun!

What do you think about social networks? Do they lift you up or bring you down? Do you manage them, or let them manage you? Please leave a comment below. Sending love from here.

The one change that didn’t work: I deleted all my social media apps – and found myself bored I really did have more time on my hands when I quit addictive online platforms. But I missed connecting with friends and discovering unexpected inspiration

If you’re anywhere near London, don’t miss this opportunity!

CLIENTS REQUIRED!

On Thursday 26th January we will be offering free yoga therapy to the public, and we are currently looking for clients who are available to attend in-person at The Minded Institute in Camden.

Sessions are provided by expert trainees from our 2021 cohort of the 580-hour Yoga Therapy Diploma; all students have gone through extensive training since they embarked on this journey in April last year, and these yoga therapy sessions form part of their final assessments before graduation.

We have the following time slots available:

8.30 - 9.50am
9.40 - 11.00am
10.50 - 12.10am
12.00 - 1.20pm

When you arrive for the session, you will be met by the course director, Heather Mason, while your yoga therapist in training reviews the health history and goals you have provided (via an intake form you will be sent) and creates a bespoke plan for you. Together, you will review the plan and go through practices tailored to your needs.

You will also be given home practices to take away in order to continue cultivating your wellbeing beyond the session. Examples of practices include postures, breathing techniques, meditations, self-reflections, guided relaxation and lifestyle advice. During the session, an assessor (a yoga therapy graduate chosen by the institute, due to their unique acumen) will be present as they silently assess the student’s progress and competency.

If you would like to be a client, please fill out the intake form below:
https://form.jotform.com/223492606372356

Do note, that as these assessments are vital for student graduation, if you choose to be a client and are assigned a slot it is imperative you show up and that you are on time. If you cannot commit, we kindly ask that you do not sign up.

You are welcome to have up to two sessions - please note how many sessions you are able to commit to on your form. Once timings have been finalised, we will contact you with important information on next steps 🙏
