🎃 Want my recipe for a spooky pumpkin soup? seasonal and fibre and complex carb rich, this is the prefect dish for national pumpkin day!
🎃 Ingredients (serves 4)
•500g butternut squash chopped
•1 medium white onion chopped
•1 clove of garlic chopped
•150g cashews
•1 tsp ginger powder or 1 thumb fresh finely chopped
•1/2 tsp Ceylon cinnamon
•a pinch of ground cumin
•a pinch of turmeric
•a pinch of paprika
•2 tbsp olive oil
•2 tbsp nutritional yeast
•1 lt boiling water
•salt and pepper to taste
•dash of miso paste
🎃 Toppings
•sunflower seeds toasted
•parsley chopped
•a pinch of salt

What’s the difference between h**p, chia and flax?
H**p, chia and flax seeds all contain omega 3 fatty acids…but each one stands out for a different reason.
🌱 Flax: 1 tablespoon of flax contains 1.6 grams of omega 3 fatty acids…your entire daily requirement. It also contains 1.9 grams of fibre, including gel-forming soluble fibre which is why it makes a great egg replacement.
There are small amounts of iron and zinc but what sets flax apart from the other two are the lignans, special polyphenols that when converted by your gut microbiome have weak phytoestrogenic activity.
⚠️ Flax should always be ground so we can access its nutrition as it’s very hard exterior is difficult to breakdown. Grind fresh and store in freezer one weeks worth at a time in a glass jar
🌱 Chia: the highest omega 3 content with 1.9 grams per tablespoon. Chia contains higher fibre – including gelling soluble fibre – at 3.7 grams with slightly higher amounts of zinc and iron and protein. For me, when you want soluble fibre, go for chia seeds.
🥣 Eat them hydrated – soaked in overnight oats, chia puddings, chia fresca, chia jam or yogurt.
🌱 H**p: the lowest omega 3 content with 0.8 grams per tablespoon but it packs a big bunch in terms of minerals and protein.
1 tablespoon of h**p contains 1.3 mg of iron, 1 mg of zinc as well as a third of your daily manganese as well as 3.3 grams of protein.
When you want minerals and protein, go for h**p. They blend up perfectly to make h**p milk, in smoothies or you can replace ½ cup of flour in most cookie and quick bread recipes with h**p to boost omega 3, protein and minerals. H**p hearts lack the soluble fibre and therefore blend seamlessly into plant milks, smoothies and baking.

❤️ Protein is the most satiating macronutrient, especially when it comes to weight maganement or perimenopausal gains, its so important to be focusing on eating enough protein in every meal.
✨ Adequate protein intake supports the production and function of several hormones, including insulin, glucagon, and growth hormone. For example, protein ingestion stimulates the release of insulin, which plays a crucial role in nutrient uptake and utilization.
😍 This becomes important in the context of hormone shifts- especially during pregnancy, post partum, perimenopause and menopause where hormone shifts trigger blood sugar instability - protein loading helps stabilization of blood sugars. 30g or even 40g at breakfast is super important for perimeno women.
👏🏻 Research shows that consuming around 30 grams of high-quality protein per meal also maximizes muscle protein synthesis crucial for muscle repair and growth, helping to heal injuries too!

Bitter foods can actually do wonders for digestion.
💚When we eat bitter foods our digestive system becomes stimulated, which helps to release stomach acid, bile, and digestive enzymes, all for digestion.
💚Always eat the bitters first on your plate, eg rocket, watercress, rucola, theres a reason why salads are served as a starter, to help boost these digestive juices!
💚You can even add in a digestive bitters herbal tonic before meals to up that bitter quotient even more. Great to stimulate bile flow if you have gallbladder issues.
💚It is totally possible to repogramme our taste buds to enjoy the bitter and avoid the sweet, just takes a few tries and pretty soon that sweet taste will be far too much for you and you will crave that bitter :)

It is very likely to be driven by a vitamin d deficiency, the number one vitamin for immune support
Here are 4 signs that you maybe deficient:
1. increased susceptibility to infections/viruses
2. daytime sleepiness
3. depression
4. autoimmune conditions
The trouble is the reference ranges for vitamin d are out of date and need to be optimised. Doctors often say they are fine when they are not fine at all. I like to see vitamin d around the 100 nmol/L (40ng/mL) mark - some doctors can say its fine at around the 50 nmol/L which it isnt and worse still they wont even run blood tests for it.
My advise is especially in the UK and even in Spain as it starts to cool down to get your D tested regularly and supplement - most people can do with 5000 IU daily and if deficient you would need to increase that or get an intramuscular injrection for an immediate boost (depending on your personal circumstances of course, check with your practitioner whats safe).

Want to know how to choose the best coffee for gut health?
Number one is quality not quantity - i mean im not recommending going crazy on coffee but if you do have it make the best choices!
Over the course of the day, your body accumulates adenosine which is responsible for making you feel tired. This binds to adenosine receptors causing drowsiness by slowing down nerve cell activity & blood vessels to dilate, most likely to let more oxygen into that organ during sleep.
When you drink coffee the caffeine in your brain competes with adenosine preventing it from binding to A1 receptors giving you that jolt of wakefulness. So you feel less tired but you don’t necessarily have more physical energy.
What about gut health?
Quality matters. Mycotoxins, pesticides, heavy metals from the soil, acrylamide, and BPA are all potential contaminants. Buying organic doesn’t protect you from those. In the UK I love @yourexhale
Coffee and caffeine can stimulate the production of gastric acid. This can cause heartburn and worsen symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in some. Its also acidic worsening IBS symptoms.
And it naturally increases cortisol levels and in turn anxiety symptoms especially if you mega dose on 3 cups on an empty stomach in the mornings!
So as i said be selective, make the right choices and if you are on a therapeutic healing journey its best to abstain to allow the bodies natural rhtymn to heal x
