Who Makes Planning Choices? 23/10/2023

Just stumbled upon a research piece by Urban Institute "Who Makes Planning Choices?" — and although the findings are far from exciting, it’s even more important to talk about the current situation in planning. The data is form the US, but the situation might be similar to other systems.

Land-use decision-making bodies — whose decisions on land-use laws influence from property prices to labor market efficiency, to CO2 emission targets — are rarely representative.

Some of the stats:
⇾ Non-Hispanic white residents are overrepresented.
⇾ Men are overrepresented.
⇾ Homeowners are overrepresented.
⇾ People with occupations related to land-use development are overrepresented.

The implications are drastic: most of the laws drafted and implemented by these bodies do not take into account the voices of people who carry out their consequences. That is why diversity and inclusivity at all stages of citizen engagement matters. And yes, Maptionnaire times and again proves that it boosts inclusivity and engages more people in the decision-making process, but a political and cultural will often come first.

Here is the full report:

Who Makes Planning Choices? The Urban Institute conducted a first-of-its-kind survey of land-use decisionmakers nationwide to collect and analyze data on the racial and gender characteristics, housing tenures, and occupations of land-use decisionmaking board members across 482 jurisdictions and 601 land-use decisionmaking bodi...

Improving EV Infrastructure with a Community Consultation 11/10/2023

To accelerate the switch to electric and hybrid vehicles, the supportive infrastructure must reflect local preferences and habits.

And what better way to gather this information than simply asking users where they would like charging stations to be located?

The City of Copenhagen – home to 600,000 residents, rising to more than 2 million in the metropolitan area – consulted its residents, stakeholders, and guests when expanding its EV charging infrastructure. By running the consultation digitally, the planners ensured a broad outreach and gathered precise data to support the development work.

For this project, the Construction, Parking, and Environment Office designed a Maptionnaire survey where respondents simply marked on a digital map the desired location for a charging station. The map also shows the existing charger infrastructure, helping respondents make a more balanced decision.

More learnings from this case here:

Improving EV Infrastructure with a Community Consultation Copenhagen ran a community consultation with a map-based survey to let residents define the placement of EV charging stations.

How can a draft plan or a city design dynamically show the changes to the public? GIFs and other short animations are awesome for this purpose.
They can add a time perspective to the plan and make it more engaging and easy to grasp.

Just a few ideas of what you can show in a GIF:
📍Add up layers one by one
📍Show before and after
📍Show how the changes will take place in time
📍Show what the differences are between proposals
📍Any other ideas?

What’s more, you can integrate GIFs in your Maptionnaire survey as a background image! This way, you’ll show what aspects of the environment are going to change and make the survey even more interactive. You can later use individual views from the plan to collect specific GIS-backed feedback.

A tip: you can create a GIF in Canva for free with your own materials. Just be mindful of the length (don’t go over 30 seconds) and don’t stack too much information in one GIF (and give enough time to grasp each view). Voilà!

To involve or not to involve? It’s not even a question anymore — a master planning process (or any city development project) has to include citizen engagement in its many stages.

The benefits are many:
✧ Aligning the goals between citizens and planners
✧ Getting valuable data from residents
✧ Increasing buy-in of the whole plan
✧ Building trust with residents and being transparent
But engagement also comes with some hurdles, like reaching out to underrepresented groups or integrating participation results into the plan draft.

To help you successfully organize and manage citizen engagement in master planning processes, we’ve put our expensive expertise into a guide.

Download it for free here: https://maptionnaire.com/citizen-engagement-master-planning-guide.

You’ll learn how to:
* Plan the engagement processes at various stages of a master planning project
* Apply Maptionnaire at all stages of the master planning project
* Use the engagement data in the planning process
* Plan the outreach for engagement campaigns and report the results back to the citizens
* Learn from multiple examples of cities implementing citizen engagement with Maptionnaire

Kamyar Hasanzadeh: Insights on anonymising and opening PPGIS data 19/07/2023

Did you know that Maptionnaire’s citizen engagement platform is also used in multiple research projects? Here is a spotlight on Kamyar Hasanzadeh from Aalto University (which is Maptionnaire’s alma mater, by the way).

Kamyar uses Maptionnaire to examine what people actually want from their living environments. With our platform, he can ask participants to map what they experience in different kinds of locations and how they use public spaces.

And here is a twist: Kamyar also studies how one can anonymize this geolocated data (for example, when people indicate their commute routes or homes) by adding a certain amount of noise to the location coordinates. When data is anonymized, it can be openly shared with other researchers.

🥵 When cities soak in the heat, try cool walkability planning.

There are several proven solutions — for example, creating a network of shadeways and pedways — for making walking, wheeling, and cycling more comfortable (and also healthier) in hot temperatures. Todd Litman shows that although costly creating a network of cool walkable paths is also economically and environmentally beneficial solution.

But where should you develop the network? In which part of a city do residents feel the most need for shade? Participatory mapping platforms like Maptionnaire can help locals to map their experiences and perceptions of where it feels the hottest. They can also suggest what solutions could help make transit more pleasant. Planners will get all these insights in a GIS-backed format that can be quickly integrated in the planning process.

These experiential insights are essential for introducing cool walkability planning to your city.

All Things Urban - What is Community Engagement and Why is It Crucial for Urban Planning? 30/09/2022

Engaging community is key to planning liveable and lovable cities. This dialog wit residents also helps planners to find resilient and sustainable solutions.

We're glad to share our thoughts and expertise in and with All Things Urban — a community of likeminded urbanists.

All Things Urban - What is Community Engagement and Why is It Crucial for Urban Planning?

28/09/2022

You’ve designed a fantastic community engagement survey for your planning project and got enough of responses. What’s next?

You’ve got it right — data analysis.
And there’re several options here:

1️⃣ You can export your raw data into a GIS or statistical analysis tool.
You can then build awesome visualisations that do so well for reporting. But it only works if you have the software and the talent in the teem to master it. Otherwise, you’re left with a box full of juicy data and no way to unlock it.

2️⃣ You can analyse and report within the community engagement platform where you’ve made the survey.
With Maptionnaire, you can apply filters and analyse responses without leaving the platform.
What’s the transit preferences of adults over 60? Where do people from this district prefer to take their leisure walks? The answers are already there.
You can then easily bring them into visualisations that can go straight into your reporting.
