𝚂𝚊𝚢 𝚑𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚘 𝚝𝚘 𝙹𝚞𝚜𝚜𝚒, 𝚘𝚞𝚛 𝚝𝚊𝚕𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚎𝚍 𝚂𝚎𝚗𝚒𝚘𝚛 𝙲𝚘𝚗𝚜𝚞𝚕𝚝𝚊𝚗𝚝 ✨

Since an early age, Jussi has been infatuated with computers and eventually, his hobby became a profession. But if it was up to his son, he’s father would be doing something completely different. Find out what 🌝

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫?

When the first computer arrived at our home, I was just playing around with that pretty much all of the time.

Then we had some programming at school, which I liked a lot and then later in my life, I wanted to start studying computer science.

𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭? (𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲, 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦, 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭)

Respect. I think listening to and accepting other people’s opinions and the people as they are, are one of the most valuable things we can do for each other.

𝐖𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞?

My 3-year-old son asked a few days ago if we could get a space rocket. If he finds one, I’ll go with him!

He also told me to quit working in IT, so I could become an astronaut.

Houstonians are often described as professional among our customers and partners. 💎

This is no coincidence, as professionalism is one of our core values. ✨

For us, professionalism means good manners, skills to make sound decisions, and follow-through commitments. We think that professional behavior is essential for creating an atmosphere of trust and respect among our colleagues and customers, which are also our values.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫?

I’ve always liked doing things with computers. Playing video games is still my dear hobby. Later in life, I was studying IT at university and noticed that I didn’t hate programming. Despite all the “head banging on the wall” all these years, I’m still doing it. I mean coding.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐝𝐚𝐲?

At least 2 cups of coffee and go through my schedule/todo-list. Also, I like to have daily meetings at the beginning of the day.

𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭? (𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲, 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦, 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭)

All but if I had to choose only one it would be empathy. Empathy towards myself, others, and the project.. 🌝

11/01/2023

Values are the cornerstone of our culture. This year we are going to share one of our values (empathy, professionalism, trust, and respect) and what they mean to us every month.

Our January value of the month is empathy 💜, this is what Houstonians have to say about it:

“Empathy is one of the key elements in helping teams grow and build trust. We also need empathy to build trust with the client and to understand how we can best help the users to solve their problems.”

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫?

I made a decision in the 6th grade to either keep playing ice hockey or get a computer. I chose computers and of course, played games for the first years, but then it became more than a hobby and the rest is history. Making websites during the first browser is something I think about fondly nowadays.

𝐖𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞? 𝐖𝐡𝐲? 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐧𝐨𝐭?

Yes, who wouldn’t? Through my dad, I’ve grown to love science fiction and read my fair share of classics, such as Isaac Asimov. My all-time favorite, though, is Alfred Bester’s The Stars My Destination (1956). If you read it, you will know.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮?

I’m a sucker for reaction videos. Especially Nightwish - Ghost Love Score (WACKEN 2013)

In his role Mikael would like to deepen his understanding of CMS services and modern frontend technologies. Outside work he likes gaming, biking, kick-boxing, music, gym, nature and travelling.

Though Mikael embraces the remote way of working it’s been nice to see him at the office every now and then☺️

Next week you’ll get to know a bit more about Andy who joined the same day with Mikael, stay tuned!

”Without empathy, there is no respect and without respect, there is neither trust nor professionalism.” Wise words from our Houstonian of the month Sami Hult.

Read what else he has on his mind below!

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿?

I got interested in computers as a kid and learned BASIC around the age of eight. Computer magazines, local libraries and my foster father helped forward on both hardware and software side. After high school I continued to the CS department at Helsinki University of Technology. So in a way, I’ve always been a developer!

𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁?

Empathy, definitely. Without empathy, there is no respect and without respect, there is neither trust nor professionalism. I believe we all do the best choices we can under any given circumstances. Exercising empathy helps to move from being critical of another person’s character towards being critical about the actual decisions we make. This is vital for constructive environment where grudges can be replaced by creative atmosphere.

𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲? 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺?

Doctor Who! I am not as smart, brave, or old, but like the Doctor, I hope to do good and to each year learn to be more at terms with my shadow (in the Jungian sense). I love traveling and learning and helping. Sometimes I too feel lonely because not all share the same sort of curiosity towards the universe.

01/07/2022

Holiday season is here, which means it’s time to turn on the holiday mode!

We asked Houstonians about their holiday plans and got to hear some really nice ways of spending it: trips to Europe, enjoying time at summer cottage, hiking..

But it’s also ok to not have plans at all🤗

Enjoy the summer where and however you’re spending it!☀️

Meet Houstonian of the month - our Principal Consultant Toni Ahola! 💎

Toni’s passion for programming isn’t limited to just work. Learn which memory during his 10 years at Houston makes him tick and what he needs to kick off his work day. 😎

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿/𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁?

My story began by following my big brother’s journey to becoming a developer. Like many other siblings, I watched what my big brother did. When it was time to choose what I wanted to do when I grew up, I ended up choosing studies that included as much programming as possible.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲?

Building an extreme startup game with a colleague in our free time. In the game, our colleagues could compete together to solve puzzle-like tasks in the scope of delivering regression testable API.

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲?

Time travel. There is limited time to do things in life, and I would like to revisit the best moments of it whenever I want. Also, as I hate mistakes, I would like to go back in time and correct myself all the time :)

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗱𝗮𝘆?

Coffee! I cannot function without coffee. It does not matter where I am working, but I would usually first pick a cup of coffee, and after that, I would open the laptop and start the day.

29/06/2022

Wanna hear about our self-organizing community inside Houston?

Let us introduce you to Design Circle which was formed already years back to bring together design-minded people at Houston. There was a certain need for that then and there still is.

Sharing knowledge about design-related topics and boosting creativity with hands-on activities is what the whole concept is all about. In addition, it’s also a channel for communicating about sales and a place for developing design at Houston, with a little chitchat on the side.

The group sits down together every other week and anyone can suggest a topic to discuss or an activity to do, but no dry and boring slide shows🙅

A few weeks back, the group gathered for a team day including an art museum visit, an escape room and some food😋

Taking care of our communality is something where every Houstonian can pitch in and that’s why it’s great to see this small team showing the example to the rest of us❤️

22/06/2022

Say hi to Mariia, our latest new joiner who has delighted us with her presence for about two weeks now.

Here’s what she had to say about her first week with us:

“During the interview process I liked the way of communication with the Houston team and usually a stressful procedure happened to be not so terrifying. As a result, I understood that I would really like to be a part of the team, the technologies used in projects are interesting and I believe there will be opportunities for me to grow further as a specialist and be useful for the company.

Being here for the week already I feel like I wasn’t wrong, people are really sweet, the office atmosphere is calm and cozy, internal processes seem to be clear and transparent so far as well as the company’s future plans.”

Since there’s no need to stress about our recruitment process, maybe it’s time to send that application? Check out our website for open positions!🤩

Photos from Houston Inc's post 14/06/2022

We let our people develop their skills on 8 self-study days a year. We call it the “Brain Train”.

Aarni is using his Brain Train to develop his recycling app “BioMe”. The new mobile app combines his two passions and mega trends: digitalization and sustainability. The name comes from the thought of “recycle me”. ♻️

“The building I live in didn’t have a recycling point for metal. Many people don’t recycle because they don't know where to do it or how to do it. To resolve this issue, I started working on this app, where you can locate your nearest recycling point. The app also includes guidelines on identifying which recycling category trashes belong”.

Aarni’s mission is to publish the app in the Google Play Store after the summer. After that, no one should have an excuse not to recycle.☝️

Houstonians are eager cyclists and now they get to enjoy their beloved hobby even more: from this day forward Houston offers the bike benefit to all Houstonians!

Meet our expat abroad, Mikhail!

Mikhail started working remotely a couple of weeks ago and he has got off to a good start in his new team. Now he is aiming to broaden his knowledge of DevOps and cloud technologies.

In the near future, Mikhail is planning to move to Finland and then we’ll get the chance to welcome him in person❤️

Meet Houstonian of the month, Ari Metso! 🌟

Find out how Ari’s care for clients’ IT systems turned into a new chapter in his 13-year career at Houston.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿/𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱?

I originally became a developer the classic way. A hobby became a field of study and then a full-time job. During the last few years, I noticed that I started to look at development more and more from the reliability and maintainability points of view. Becoming the Technical Lead in Houston Care was a natural move after that.

𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁?

Respect. There's always a story behind everyone and everything. Being respectful towards the solutions and the people behind them does not take anything away from you, but it can help greatly in building understanding and trust.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗱𝗮𝘆?

Call me old-school, but I like to start my day with a coffee, some breakfast, and a physical newspaper. Yes, I prefer turning pages over scrolling and I feel like I tend to read more articles and more thoroughly when it's on paper instead of a screen. After that, I usually work the first hour from home and then decide whether or not to go to the office.

Work at Houston for 10 years and you can call yourself a Houston Veteran!🎖

Last week we celebrated a new Houston Veteran who now gets to wear the same cool t-shirt as these guys here. The shirt is a symbol of a long commitment and every Veteran should wear it with pride🔥

After a decade our Veterans have seen a lot and there are many funny memories to think back to like this old recruitment ad in the background👀

All in all Houston Veterans are much appreciated in the company and that’s why reward them not only with the t-shirt that pops up but with a nice dinner that they can enjoy to celebrate this special occasion🥳

How many Houston Veterans you’d guess we currently have?

Did your colleague help you solve a problem at work? Is someone at your office sharing good advice? Tell them how grateful you are for that and make their day!🤗

Here’s one way how we at Houston say thanks to one another💛

Pandemia sai pohtimaan työn mielekkyyttä 16/05/2022

💥Breaking News: Our CSMO Minna Ruusuvuori is on Yle Aamu talking about her, Liisa Holma, and Ulla Jones’ new business podcast "Lähtijät", which focuses on resignations and the stories behind them.

The podcast hosts have found, that one of the most common reasons for people to leave a company is poor leadership and values that aren’t aligned with theirs.

At Houston we want to foster a “people first” culture. We choose our employees carefully, one by one. Every Houstonian is different, and each individual is respected as they are.

“Our leadership principles are led from our values, which are Empathy, Trust, Professionalism, and Respect”, says our People Operations Chief Kristiina Vainio.

We’re really happy we got one more mobile developer on board. Aleksei says he is focusing mostly on iOS but loves playing around with more low-level stuff.

Tuesday means it’s time for saunavuoro!

Our full-stack developer Veeru is using his saunavuoro to learn different cloud technologies, as he plans to become a certified cloud architect in the future.

“I started a project in Azure IoT, which was a completely new technology to me. I appreciate that I was allowed to learn as I go and now I’m using saunavuoro to further deepen my know-how in cloud technologies.

This is also the reason I came to work at Houston in the first place - all the opportunities to work on many interesting projects and for allocating extra time for learning.”

Perhaps this summer we will have a brand new Cloud Specialist! ☁️

29/04/2022

Let us introduce our Customer Problem Solver, Mia Hartikainen!

You might have come across her in a sales meeting or workshop, as she juggles a dual role in sales and service design 💎

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿?

My title and role is a customer problem solver and in practice that is a combination of sales and service design functions. I want to understand customers, their challenges and needs, but I also want to help customers solve these problems and create value. This is actually what I have been doing all my work life, just under different roles.

𝗪𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲? 𝗪𝗵𝘆? 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁?

I would definitely travel outer space if I had the chance. It could be just cruising around the orbit and doing some spacewalking or a trip to the moon. I would love to feel the great silence, float in a gravity-free zone and feel fully free, and see our globe from a distance.

𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁? (𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆, 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁, 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺, 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁)

All the Houston values are important to me, however, I believe everything is and should be built on trust. I feel that empathy without trust is just phony or there is no real respect without trust.
