The Frank Hilton Organization is honored to contribute to the policy drafting process, advocating for a supportive framework that ensure access to basic human rights for children with disabilities and their families. FHO CEO, Sureni Jayaweera, was appointed to the Technical Working Group, and through her active participation FHO ensured that voices of the children we serve were represented and their needs addressed within the policy.

We extend our gratitude to the Government of Fiji for adopting a collaborative approach that emphasizes the collective responsibility of both the government and society in the implementation of this policy. "It takes a village to raise a child," and together, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.

Following Cabinet approval, the Fiji National Early Childhood Development Policy will be implemented collaboratively by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection.

The policy is designed to optimize the development of all Fijian children, with a particular focus on the critical first 1,000 days of life.

Key objectives include ensuring optimal nutrition and health, fostering early learning and development, providing quality care, and creating safe, nurturing environments protected from all forms of violence, abuse, neglect, and conflict.

It is with immense pride and admiration that we announce a remarkable achievement by our very own Chief Executive Officer, Sureni Jayaweera Perera. Last week, at the 12th Biennial Conference of the Australasian Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine in Cairns, Australia, Sureni was honored with the prestigious Advocacy Achievement Award.

For over a decade Sureni has conceptualized, designed and implemented the Early Detection and Intervention service delivery programme which is now the core function of the Frank Hilton Organization. This framework has positively impacted the lives of thousands of Fijian children, providing them with the support and services they so desperately need.

In her acceptance speech Sureni shared a powerful message, "Even amidst the complexities and limitations that surround us, it is imperative that we maintain unwavering resolve and steadfast commitment. As service providers, practitioners, academics, and policymakers, we have a duty to uphold the rights of children with disabilities and their families, regardless of the constraints we face. Every child deserves to thrive, and it is our collective responsibility to raise our voices and enact tangible, meaningful, and transformative change in their lives."

Sureni's words resonate deeply with all of us at FHO. They remind us of the profound impact we can have when we come together with a shared purpose and unwavering dedication. Her leadership and advocacy is a call to action for everyone in our community.

The Stepping Stones, which is a parent training program for Children with Cerebral Palsy and similar conditions, concluded on Friday, August 2nd, marking its successful 9th iteration. The program had run for six days and involved six families. During this time, parents were educated on children's rights, communication, positioning and mobility support, feeding and swallowing, supporting play, and integrating children into the community.

The final session took place outside the FHO premises at Kitaram Park, Lami, with children, family members, and all clinical staff involved. This community day was designed to help children explore their surroundings, foster connections among parents, and provide a break for the participating families. Certificates of completion were awarded to the parents by the clinicians who conducted the program.

Through this program, we hope these parents will become role models within the community for other parents of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Stepping Stones Day 5: Today’s focus was all about play! 🎨

The session was facilitated by our Positive Behavior Support Officer Taraivini Tavakaturaga, Speech Pathologist, Dira Ah Kee, assisted by our Community Rehabilitation Assistant Anasavaia Navara.

The session was an interesting one. We started with a discussion on how parents play with their kids and explored creative ways to make toys using home resources. Playtime is crucial for brain development, communication skills, and sparking new interests in children. We covered various types of play—functional, pretend, sensory, and people play. We even made stress balls from flour and balloons, which help children develop sensory skills and manage stress.

We also incorporated a fun game for parents where they guessed which animal they were portraying without speaking! 🦁🐶 We ended the session with celebrating Taniela's birthday, he is one of the kids that attended the sessions.

We wrapped up the session with a special celebration for Taniela’s birthday🎉🎂 Happy Birthday Sonny Boy!

Tomorrow's session is Community and Photo Voice!

Stepping Stones Day 4 - Feeding ✅

Today’s session was all about feeding!

The session was facilitated by our Speech Pathologists Haritha Amunugama, assisted by Dira Ah Kee, and Physiotherapist Marylene Kumar. We had 6 parents join us for the session, they learned essential feeding techniques and proper positions to make mealtimes smoother for their child.

Parents learned about feeding techniques, optimal positions, and even the impact of choosing the right spoon. We also discussed breathing, eating strategies, and other tips that make a difference.

The highlight? A fun quiz where parents role-played feeding their child, gaining valuable insights into their little ones' experiences. Looking forward to tomorrow’s session on play! 🎉
