The official death toll in Gaza has now tragically exceeded 40,000 lives, making this one of the deadliest conflicts of the 21st century. Among the victims, at least 10,627 are children of whom 663 were under one year of age, and many lives remain unaccounted for. The true toll, including those lost to the indirect consequences of the conflict—such as disease, displacement, and despair—continues to rise, many unreported.
We need to act now. The bloodshed must end. Demand an immediate and permanent to save countless more lives.

Last week, staff across Oxfam in the Pacific were joined by partners, friends and colleagues from Oxfam Australia and Oxfam Aotearoa as we gathered to honour the memory of Fabian and Shabella. We lost both of our colleagues this year – with Fabian passing in April and Shabella passing earlier this month.
Last week’s memorial service, led by Rev James Bhagwan, allowed us the opportunity to gather virtually and reflect on the lives and legacy of Fabian and Shabella, and how their activism and passion for their work impacted our lives, our partners, and the communities that we work with.
May their souls rest in peace 💚

Today we publish a new piece on loss and damage in Vanuatu. This booklet of photos capture visual stories from people that have lost so much. In a region already prone to disasters, the impacts of climate change have pushed communities across the Pacific even further into poverty. At community level, we’re supporting local CSOs like the Santo Sunset Environment Network in dealing with the impacts of climate induced loss and damage, while at national, regional and global level, we continue to call on leaders to amp up their commitments to loss and damage finance, particularly as discussions around a new collective quantified goal continue.

Teachers at Henganofi school in Papua New Guinea show us the taps that have been built in their school ensuring that students are able to not only access quality education but clean, drinking water as well 💚
Our climate justice project, PACCCIL, worked with the Solomon Islands Climate Action Network (SICAN) in collecting stories from people around the Solomon Islands - documenting their experiences of climate change.
These stories form part of a growing body of evidence that Oxfam and its partners have gathered as part of a submission to the International Court of Justice as it prepares to deliver on a highly anticipated advisory opinion on the rights of current and future generations affected by the climate crisis. Regardless of the outcome of this process, the evidence is clear - and the time to act is running out.

“Women are the backbone of society"
Our Gender Justice Lead, Shirley Tagi, who is also co-author of our newly released report, “Unpaid Care, Domestic and Communal Work” spoke to ABC Pacific about the significance of this report.
”When we look at the modern nation state in all its diversity, it’s constructed for the mythical male…We’re proposing the reconfiguration of the state to look at placing women and all people at the centre of policies.”
You can listen to the full interview here:
Fijian women face three times the unpaid work of men - Oxfam - ABC Pacific A new Oxfam report finds that on average, Fijian women work more than three times the unpaid work than men.
The cleaning, the cooking, the housework. Caring for children and the elderly. A lot of the unpaid care work that happens around us is often not even seen as work. But it is, and women – who are often tasked with this unpaid care work, spend too much time doing it. More than 9 hours a day in fact for Fijian women. Fijian men on the other hand spend only 2-3 hours on unpaid care work a day. It’s time to change that. Read our new report here or scan the QR code:

Our new report on unpaid care work predominantly done by women and girls reveals some shocking figures, including that Fijian women perform more than 9 hours of unpaid care work every day while Fijian men in contrast perform an average of only 2-3 hours of unpaid care work a day. Yesterday, we had the opportunity to sit down with Breakfast at Fiji One to discuss our new report on Unpaid Care, Domestic and Communal Work. Loata of Partners in Community Development Fiji (PCDF) and Tura discussed key findings of the report and why it matters 💚
As we celebrate International Women’s Day today, we’re excited to launch this new report from Oxfam in the Pacific and our Fiji partners: Social Empowerment and Education Program- SEEP, Partners in Community Development Fiji (PCDF) and Women in Fisheries Network- Fiji. The report finds that on average Fijian women perform more than 9 hours of unpaid care work every day while Fijian men in contrast perform an average of only 2-3 hours of unpaid care work a day. These statistics are not surprising – they are part of a global trend of women, girls and gender non-binary people who have had to engage in what is often back-breaking, time-consuming and resource-intensive care work without recognition or reward. We believe it’s time to change that. Read the full report at the link below:
