ICYMI: The SING IMT was a "Best of Europe" featured technology in Dr. Pavel Stodůlka’s presentation at last month’s 2024 AECOS (American-European Congress of Ophthalmic Surgery)'s Winter Symposium Meeting.

Dr. Stodulka is President of the AECOS European Executive Committee and is a current implanter of the SING IMT in the Czech Republic.

Samsara Vision CEO Tom Ruggia was thrilled to receive this honor and provided the following statement.

Did you hear that more patients across Europe have access to the first intraocular telescope, the SING IMT™️? Dr. Stratos Gotzaridis MD from Retina Athens Eye Center in Greece recently rejoined our community of SING IMT™️ facilities in Europe.

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Gotzaridis to our list of implantation facilities giving end-stage macular degeneration patients hope and independence.

There are treatments to slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration, but the truth is these treatments are mainly for wet late-stage AMD and they come with a high burden. The SING IMT™️ is the only surgical solution available in Europe to allow late-stage AMD patients to regain their vision.

Researchers discovered the high unmet needs of patients living with age-related macular degeneration by analyzing patients from the Fight Retinal Blindness (FRB!) registry. The study showed that high treatment burden is common issue in routine clinical practice in Europe, with a quarter of patients requiring injections of conventional VEGF inhibitors every 6 weeks at 2 years and 40 percent discontinuing treatment within 2 years.

Did you know there is a Macular Degeneration support group? The International Low Vision Support Group connects AMD patients and advocates across the globe.

As part of the AMD community, it’s important for us to share resources with our patients. The SING IMT™️ supports the patients with late-stage AMD by allowing them to reconnect with the things they love to see and do. Send us a message if you want to learn how we support the AMD community.

Imagine not being able to recognize people on the street or read text. This is what happens to late-stage AMD patients—they lose the ability to do these seemingly simple tasks. But, after the implantation of the first intraocular telescope, the SING IMT, these patients can regain their independence back.

This patient recounts her transformation with a low vision rehabilitation expert at her rehabilitation session. For someone living with age-related macular degeneration, the SING IMT™ can restore hope by reconnecting them simple tasks that provide independence and bring joy.

Should artificial light at night (ALAN) be added to the list of risk factors for age-related macular degeneration?

ALAN is known to have a substantial impact on the retina and optic nerve, potentially resulting in both indirect and direct damage to ocular tissue.

In a recent study, researchers researchers investigated the association between residential outdoor artificial light at night (OALAN) and risk of incident exudative AMD (EAMD) using nationwide population-based data in South Korea.

While late-stage AMD patients might not know the true cause of their AMD, they do have the opportunity for immediate support. The SING IMT™️ helps patients aged 55+ regain the central vision once lost to late-stage AMD.

This Age-Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month, we want to call attention to the mental health implications for those living with age-related macular degeneration and their caregivers.

About half of patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and a high percentage of the people who care for them, experience depression and anxiety about their disease and treatment.

Richard Gale, MBChB, PhD, a professor at Hull York Medical School, United Kingdom, told attendees at the European Society of Retina Specialists (EURETINA) 2023 that the medical community needs to do much better in supporting patients’ mental health. For qualified late-stage AMD patients, the SING IMT™️ can help them regain their vision and independence so they can get back to the things they love to do and see.

Did you know that by 2040 an estimated 248 million people world-wide will be diagnosed with AMD? That’s an increase of 52 million from 2020.

AMD has systemic and lifestyle components, meaning many factors, such as genetics, diet, exercise, environmental factors, and smoking, can all impact the risk for the disease. A new review article published in the Chonnam Medical Journal provides a solid overview of the condition. You can read the research here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10570864/

The SING IMT™️ is approved for late-stage AMD patients who are 55 years of age or older and is immediately available to support late-stage AMD patients in regaining back their vision. The SING IMT™️ is the only surgical treatment option registered to support the increasing prevalence of this disease among patients.

Is geographic atrophy having a moment? Geographic atrophy or GA happens at the end stage of AMD. Advancements have been made with regard to treating other aspects of late-stage AMD, but GA hasn’t received as much attention, until now.

In an Ophthalmology Times article, Dr. Sruthi Arepalli outlines novel therapies in the pipeline, specifically to treat GA. More real-world clinical data are needed on these therapies, but this could be positive news for patients with late-stage AMD.

SING IMT™️ continues to be the only surgical solution CE marked and immediately available supporting late-stage AMD patients to regain back their vision.

🎉Welcome, to the SING IMT™️ community, Dr. Agnieszka Nowosielska from Warsaw Eye Hospital in Poland.

We are so pleased another implanting center is able to offer the SING IMT™️ in Europe. Just one more way the Samsara Vision team is increasing support to more late-stage AMD patients.

Recently you might’ve heard the European Medicines Agency recommended the refusal of the marketing authorisation for Apellis’ Syfovre, a medicine intended for the treatment of geographic atrophy caused by age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD. Geographic atrophy is an advanced form of AMD.

It’s unfortunate that this drug has not been approved for patients fighting the progression of GA. For now, SING IMT™️ continues to be the only surgical solution CE marked and immediately available supporting late-stage AMD patients to regain back their vision.

What a better way to finish the year than to welcome a new surgeon to the SING IMT™ community.

Our congratulations to the surgical team of Dr Luigi Caretti, Direttore https://U.O.C. di Oculistica in Rovigo, Italy, and his assistant, Dr Albert Guerriero.

We are very pleased to be able to welcome doctors Caretti and Guerriero to the ever-expanding list of surgeons who are both qualified and experienced to give their patients the high quality care they deserve.

What sense of fulfilment and great energy you get when you can interact directly with the people you are trying to help regain their independence!

This is exactly what happened at the Second European Congress of the Patient Association Mácula-Retina in Seville, Spain, from 23-25 November.

The first highlight was Prof Mario Toro's presentation on his experiences implanting the SING IMT™ and the result: clinical publications showing outcomes in the three months following surgery.
During this same presentation, he raised the topic whether "early cataract surgery does not present long term benefits in age-related macular degeneration".

Then, Dr Paola Sasso explained the importance of assessing patient eligibility and rehabilitation to guarantee higher chances of successful outcomes and satisfied patients.

All this to an audience that consisted primarily of interested patients suffering from retinal diseases, who therefore engaged with the speakers in-depth, requesting further information and showing their excitement at the new surgical solutions they may benefit from.

Congratulations to the asociación Macula Retina for their skillful organisation of the event, offering high-level scientific content that was showcased over 3 days, all while welcoming two other patient association organisations who represent approximately 170 million people.

This event gave attendees encouragement in the form of a sense of mission: the knowledge that incidences of macula-retinal diseases will dramatically increase in the coming years as populations age, and habits change.

Welcoming Dr. Marco Leozzappa to the SING IMT™ comunity!

We are pleased to introduce Dr. Marco Leozzappa and his team, who recently performed a successful implantation of SING IMT™ at Ospedale Perrino ASL Brindisi Hospital in Brindisi, Italy.

Recently, Dr. Leozzappa together with his colleagues performed a successful implantation of SING IMT™, demonstrating his dedication to ensuring his patients receive the best, most advanced care possible.

Join us in extending a warm welcome to Dr. Leozzappa as we look forward to hearing about more of his successes in treating AMD brought highly advanced eye-care to the Apulian region.

22/11/2023

The second European Congress of the Patient Association Mácula-Retina is set to take place this week in Seville, running from the 23rd to the 25th of November.

We are honored to be active participants in this congress, where the latest advancements in supporting patients with Retinal-Macula diseases will be highlighted.

During the event, SING IMT will be showcased as the only solution which currently has support from peer-reviewed publications regarding the positive results patients have been experiencing three to six months following the surgery.

It is always inspiring to hear firsthand from potential recipients about their expectations and the needs they feel should be addressed. Many express a desire for better support from health authorities to make these treatments accessible to a larger number of patients.

Join us in Seville as we come together to share insights, foster collaboration, and work towards advancements in the treatment of Retinal-Macula diseases.

Sharing the final episode of our mini-series with Dr. Paola Sasso, bringing light on the invaluable insights gained from her experience. In this episode, she delves into the journey that has significantly impacted the field of eye care.

Dr. Sasso explores the historical separation between clinical/surgical and rehabilitation aspects, which traditionally have run in parallel.

The introduction of the SING IMT™ has forced these to work together, fostering collaboration and addressing the complexities experienced by patients suffering from AMD.

A sincere thank you to Dr. Paola Sasso for guiding us through this series.

As we wrap up this mini-series, let's continue the conversation! Share your thoughts, experiences, and insights on the evolving landscape of eye care.
