Fiona and Lainey from Dial-a-Smile have had a lovely morning on a tandem electric bike from Biosphere Bikes in Girvan. They have all sorts of accessible bikes and beach wheelchairs including a beach 4 wheeled walker. They have a hoist that you can use to get on and off if necessary.

Anne-Marie working on weight transference in gait with no walking aid.

01/05/2024

We would like to share Anne-Marie's story so far with her permission. She had a Stroke in July 2022 which affected the left side of her body. On our first visit in August 2023 she had significant weakness throughout her left side.Poor posture and balance in standing. She walked with a 4 pronged stick and an AFO on left leg.
We have worked on left leg and arm control, balance and gait reeducation. Anne-Marie now walks well with a foot up and single point stick. As you can see from the short video clips she is making great improvements indoors and outdoors. Her next goal is to complete a 3K charity walk.
Anne- Marie inspires us with her dedication and continued motivation to improve.

Have you benefitted from neuroplasticity in any way?

Neuroplasticity is a process that begins after a stroke, where the brain re-wires itself. This is an incredible ability our brains have, allowing you to improve your skills that may have been impacted by stroke, such as walking, talking and using your affected arm.

This happens because brain cells send messages around the brain, and having a stroke damages some of these connections inside the brain, between the brain and the body.

But when you do rehabilitation activities, it helps the brain to make new connections in the healthy part, so you can encourage your brain to re-wire itself!

However, please be patient with yourself through this process, there is no time limit on neuroplasticity; it can continue for years and every time you take an extra step, say a new word, or do a hand exercise, it helps the brain to make brand new connections. 💜

Foot pressure assessment is now available at the Ayr clinic!

We are working with MoveBetter Physiotherapy clinics in Ayrshire to bring biomechanical assessment, foot pressure analysis and orthotic services. 🏃‍♂️👟🦶

Foot pressure analysis allows us to work out exactly how your foot is reacting with the ground when walking and standing.

Using this data, an exact orthotics design can be tailored to meet the everyday demands placed on your foot.

The scan will also show high risk areas of pressure which is particularly important if you are diabetic!

We have had great results using this technology in getting people out of pain and back doing what they love.

If you want to know more please get in touch.

Improving care for patients with Parkinson’s

A team from NHS Ayrshire & Arran has successfully created a system to ensure that people with Parkinson’s get their medication on time while they are in hospital.

Parkinson’s Nurse Specialist Nick Bryden, who led the team, explains: “The timely administration of medication is hugely important in helping to control symptoms in people with Parkinson’s.

Guidance states that Parkinson’s medication should be administered within 30 minutes, either side, of the prescribed time which can be challenging within a busy hospital ward environment.

“When we initially worked with our digital pharmacist, Richard Cottrell, it was to develop a system that would alert us to when a Parkinson’s patient was admitted to hospital.

It then became clear that we could take the system a step further and use it to monitor if people are on the right medication and whether or not it is being administered at the right time.”

The team worked to develop a further system of clear visual prompts with NHS Digital services, which appear alongside relevant patient details on wards’ electronic whiteboards.

Every patient prescribed Parkinson’s medication has a tulip symbol beside their name which changes colour and flashes when it’s close to the time to administer the medication.

The system was initially piloted in a couple of wards and, due to its success, has now been rolled out to almost every ward in Ayrshire and Arran.

Jennifer Wilson, Nurse Director, said: “Nick and the team’s successful work has led to a marked improvement in the timely administration of Parkinson’s medicines and, therefore, has enabled us to better support patients with Parkinson’s who are admitted to hospital.

It also provides important support to ward staff - education can now be targeted more efficiently and effectively and the ‘tulip’ system has given staff the tools to administer medications in a timelier manner.”

Nick, who works at Biggart Hospital in Prestwick, has been congratulated in the Scottish Parliament for developing the system, and also recently won an advanced project award for his work from the Neurology Academy.

He said: ““It’s great to be recognised in this way but this was a real team effort, and the credit belongs to everyone who was involved. We’re just glad to have made a positive difference for patients with Parkinson’s.”

Nick and the team plan to share their work with other health boards in Scotland.

James Jopling, Parkinson's UK Scotland Director, said: “It’s brilliant to see the innovative work of the team in Ayrshire helping people with Parkinson’s to get their medication on time in hospital.

We as a charity are working across the UK to support changes in hospital practice to bring about a better experience for people with Parkinson’s.

It’s great to see such a positive example so close to home and we hope to see this kind of work replicated right across Scotland.”

The same fantastic service only with a different name!

You may have noticed we’ve changed our name! 😊 😀
I’ve been informed that someone else has a trademark on Dial-A-Daughter so I can’t use it anymore for the business.
Sooooo having toiled and toiled over a new name change I looked to my photos for inspiration!
Alas I noticed one thing all my clients had in common!
If I can put a smile on someone’s face with my service then I’m also a happy woman! 💜😊👏🏼
So welcome to the same service with a new name!
What do you think?

Just remember I don’t do dentistry! 😂😱

Sounds like a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

An amazing afternoon by the beach in Troon.
Reminiscing and laughing and enjoying the warm water on our bare feet.
Watching crabs and wee fish swim around our toes.
Walking back to the car with sandy feet on freshly cut grass 💞
The beach walk built an appetite so we went for dinner together - spent laughing, giggling and some more reminiscing… some happy memories, some sad but always thankful for a life well lived.
What an absolute pleasure it is to do this job and to help cherish your loved ones 💗
