The cottage is looking super Christmassy and cosy ready for the big man’s arrival at the weekend 🎅🏼 (or maybe it’s just ready for our more important guests staying at the cottage to enjoy the festive season in North Devon 🤷🏻‍♀️)

I’ve loved having our December guests stay at the cottage - being able to write recommendations on how to enjoy the local area during Christmas and New Year, just reminded me how glorious this time of year is in North Devon!

Winter we’re ready for you 🔥

We upgraded our fireplace a couple of years ago and it was another project that instantly improved the aesthetics, usability and comfort of Watergate Cottage.

The Aire model, has a large glass window which maximises the view of the fire - which lets face it, is what having a log burner is really all about. 😍

The fire, together with the eco fan, makes the lounge super snuggly throughout the colder months and we love that our guests get to enjoy the fire during their stays too, with one large basket of responsibly and sustainably sourced logs, complimentary to each and every stay.

Is it just us or does the dog always gets the best seat in the house? 🤷🏻‍♀️🐶

Red sky in the morning…

We love this time of year at the cottage, when sunrise hour becomes your normal wake up time and sunset your natural chill out hour.

Sunrise: we get to enjoy the sunrise emerging from the trees out the back of the house, from the comfort of either the master king size bed or the sofa in the kitchen.

Sunset: from the cottage, our favourite place to enjoy it is around the fire pit with a Jack Russell takeaway. This time of year the golden hour hitting the surrounding hillside and the interchanging colours behind the house is absolutely stunning to watch.

Wherever we choose to enjoy it, our loyal companion Nevis 🐾 is never far away, but I think if we were to ask him, he’d declare his favourite are his sunrise walks on the beach 🌅

Are you an active early bird sunrise lover or do you prefer a slow sunset chill for the win?

There really is no place like North Devon when it comes to “Golden Hour”, as we are spoilt for choice for coastal sunset locations.

This time of year is so perfect for ending your day at the beach and enjoying whatever the sun gods dish up, before heading home and enjoying the night’s drawing in from the comfort of the sofa under a blanket 🛋

I’m in the process of writing up the guestbook for Watergate Cottage and have so many suggestions and recommendations for how our guests can get the most out of their stay - but, be it rain or shine, warmth or snow, the beaches closest to us will always be at the top of the things you have to do whilst you’re in the area.

This is SO exciting for Swimbridge. Not only a vineyard but a cafe too!

Here’s Tony busy transforming our building into the winery café. We are SOOOOO EXCITED! Watch this space for updates of our opening date, when we will be opening the doors for you to come and enjoy! 🙌☕️

Backroads and blackberry picking a plenty 😍

We love getting up and out along the country lanes to grab some of nature’s bounty for our breakfast. It’s even more rewarding when the sun is rising over Swimbridge and we get to walk back with the warmth of the morning sun on our faces.

This lane is just a five minute walk from the cottage and you’re more likely to pass another early bird than you are a car.

One of the reasons we love Swimbridge so much is for the varied walks we have on our doorstep; whether it’s a quick out and back, hilly loop or a cross country stroll we’ve got you covered.

With Autumn around the corner, the walks genuinely are never prettier. I am a huge sun worshipper but I love the change of seasons and all that it brings.

Like it or not, the nights are drawing in and staying at Watergate Cottage at this time of year you can really make the most of the changing seasons and daylight hours.

A short and beautifully scenic walk from the cottage takes you to Venn Valley Vineyard and Winery and boy will you not be disappointed.

Alina and Tony’s knowledge, passion and excitement for growing vines, managing their land and introducing you to the world of wine making, is second to none. Their hard work and determination will not go unnoticed.

The vineyard tour far exceeded my expectations, it was a delight to see the vines and understand the magnitude of work, patience and endless tasks that go into getting grape to glass.

What’s more - they’re currently putting the finishing touches to a Winery Café, have other artisan businesses next door and will be a licensed venue for civil ceremonies - I believe this is just the beginning of their vision for the site and I can’t wait to watch them go the distance and see what else they have in store as the business evolves.

Can we also just take a minute to appreciate how well suited this song is to these snippets of such a glorious day out - At Last my love (a wine tour at my front door) has come along!

The pub has stylish decor throughout, serves the scrummiest homemade food 😋 and always has a lovely ambience.

Like us, our guests love it and always give it a rave review - so it’s a failsafe recommendation for us to have at the top of our list of places to visit whilst you stay at the cottage 🍻 (which is just as well as it’s the closest thing to us 🤣)

We always recommend booking to avoid disappointment, especially on their popular steak nights (Wednesday), burger nights (Friday) and Sunday roasts.
