Happy Birthday to Alexander McKee, born in 1918.

His passion and determination lead to the search for, and eventual rediscovery of, the Mary Rose. He sadly passed away in 1992.

A really interesting read 🤔🤔

Identical Titans: HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales
The colossal figures of HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales are a force to be reckoned with. These two aircraft carriers, the largest ever built for the Royal Navy, are not just impressive feats of engineering; they're twin titans, sharing the seas and skies in perfect symmetry.

Built as Equals: Mirror Images of Naval Might

Unlike some siblings who have distinct personalities, these carriers are true twins. Ordered together in 2008, they were designed and constructed based on identical blueprints. Imagine two leviathans stretching 280 meters long and 70 meters wide, displacing a staggering 70,000 tons each. They're mirror images of naval might, a testament to British engineering prowess.

The Road Not Taken: A Divergent Path Briefly Considered

The story could have been different. Early discussions entertained the idea of equipping HMS Prince of Wales with a distinct catapult launch system, allowing it to handle heavier aircraft compared to its sister ship. This would have introduced an asymmetry, a unique characteristic amongst these giants. However, cost and time constraints ultimately nixed this plan.

Maintaining Twin Status: A Shared Crown on the Waves

So, both carriers emerged as equals, maintaining their impressive stature as the biggest warships ever built for the Royal Navy. They boast identical capabilities, each housing a formidable air wing of up to 90 fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. These include F-35B Lightning II fighter jets, helicopters for troop transport and anti-submarine warfare, and drones for reconnaissance and intelligence gathering. With this arsenal at their disposal, the carriers can project airpower, safeguard British interests, and contribute to global security alongside their allies.

A Forceful Duo: More Than Just Mirror Images

While their identical design is a point of trivia, it doesn't diminish the significance of these twin carriers. Their presence together amplifies British naval power. Imagine a coordinated force, two airbases at sea, working in tandem to extend Britain's reach and influence across the globe. They serve as a symbol of national pride, technological advancement, and Britain's commitment to maintaining a strong naval presence on the world stage.

The story of HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales is one of shared purpose and identical might. These twin titans of the Royal Navy stand as testaments to British engineering and serve as powerful reminders of the nation's enduring maritime legacy.

I wonder who else was there 🤔🤔🤔🤔

, 31st May 2013, the brand new Mary Rose museum, which had just undergone a long construction process funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, opened its doors to the public.

This would be the first time the ship and the objects found on board had been seen together since they were on the seabed.

Did you come and visit?

Do you know the story behind this huge painting – or who was responsible for it?

The 20ft x 6ft artwork graphically depicts the aftermath of the terrifying air attack on RFA Sir Galahad at Bluff Cove in the Falklands in 1982.

It was discovered after 14 years in an abandoned block at HMS Raleigh during work by the MOD’s Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO).

Now on the wall of the trainees’ mess/bar at the Torpoint establishment, the team are keen to know the story behind the painting.
