Basingstoke Clean Air Campaign
We want cleaner air to breathe in Basingstoke. That's all.
Well, they said it could not be done. As of 1:30pm today 86.2% of the UK's electricity was coming from renewables and low carbon generation. Another 7% was coming from France, which is mainly low carbon as well. Only 7% was coming from fossil fuels.

This is not good.
We know the cause and we know the solution.
Stop burning fossil fuels.
It ain't rocket science.
Antarctic sea-ice at 'mind-blowing' low alarms experts Missing winter sea ice signals changes that could be a "disaster for the world", scientists say.
Yesterday the government introduced a law that forces a council to assume pollution from new houses does not exist. This is utter nonsense.
Haggis_UK 🇬🇧 🇪🇺 on X Craig Bennett(Wildlife Trust) on the Tories watering down water pollution levels to build new houses. "This govt has done an appalling job tackling pollution & what it announced, yesterday, is almost Orwellian... it ignores science... & just pretends sewage does not exist.. "
We, as individuals, can do a lot to reduce carbon emissions, but these are the guys that really need to step up and take responsibility.
July was the hottest month ever recorded by humans. And the hottest by a huge margin.
At the same time glaciers are retreating, sea levels are rising and polar ice caps are at a minimum.
We know what causing the climate emergency - it's burning fossil fuels.
We need to stop.
Simple.
I need to apologise. Last month, June 2023, I posted that this was the hottest month recorded. I was wrong.
This month, July 2023, was even hotter.
When are we going to start taking this seriously?

Copernicus confirms July 2023 was the hottest month ever recorded The global average temperature for July 2023 is confirmed to be the highest on record for any month. The month was 0.72°C warmer than the 1991-2020 average for July, and 0.33°C warmer than the previous warmest month, July 2019.
June was the hottest month ever recorded.
June 2023 Temperature Update - Berkeley Earth June 2023 was the warmest June since record-keeping began in 1850. El Niño is strengthening, and 2023 is likely to become a record warm year.
Yesterday the World's average temperature was the highest ever recorded.
We know why. It's because of emissions of greenhouse gases. We got to stop producing them. And we have to start planning for a hotter planet.
I wonder what might be causing that?
UK set for hottest June on record - with temperatures to soar even higher to 40C in July Brits are enjoying the hottest June on record, with temperatures consistently higher than 25C across the month, according to the Met Office.

About time
Councillor's quest to stop motorists leaving their engines on outside schools A COUNCILLOR is urging parents who are collecting their children by cars to switch off their engines outside the school gates.
Here's a question to answer. SUVs are more expensive to buy, cost more to insure, tax and maintain. They are highly inefficient and cost a small fortune in fuel bills. They take up more than their share of road and parking space. Oh, and they pollute the air we breathe. So why would you want to buy one if you live in a town like Basingstoke? Any answers?
Petition to ban polluting SUV advertising We banned to***co advertising because smoking is bad for our health. So, why do we let advertisers glamourise polluting, gas-guzzling SUVs through adverts in our streets, in our cinemas, in newspapers and on television?
Basingstoke Council is finally debating its climate emergency strategy this Thursday. This is after they declared an emergency neartly two years ago! Their plan lacks ambition and will not deliver a carbon free Basingstoke by 2050. One of our members put his point of view across in a letter published in this week's Basingstoke Gazette.
Do you agree? Why not let your councillor know that the Council's climate strategy needs to be much better.

Basingstoke Transition Network hasn't stopped for lockdown -
- in fact it is going more strongly than ever. After a successful 2019, culminating in a powerful environment-themed hustings for the General Election, 2020 has us engaged with key Council cabinet members and developing a vision for the post-COVID-19 future.
To deliver all this we need to widen the experience of our committee. We're looking for committed volunteers who can share their strengths and help us all to learn new skills. Are you interested in biodiversity, waste and recycling, green transport, energy generation/saving, housing, planning and civil engineering, or local government organisation and finance? Or enthusiastic to engage with people, use social media or generate publicity material?
We meet at 7 pm on the second Tuesday of the month, at present by Zoom although we hope to return to an accessible central Basingstoke meeting place eventually. Our next meeting is on 7th July.
Contact [email protected] - we look forward to hearing from you.
