Project Sleep!

Do you want to learn about the science of sleep and ways you can improve yours?

Dr Maria Loades would like to offer students between the ages of 16 and 19 the opportunity to be recruited for their study investigating the efficacy of an intervention for Sleep. Project Sleep offers young people in the UK and USA the chance to try an online single sitting self-help intervention to help them with their sleep. Participants are anonymous, and it only takes about 30 minutes to complete, from any device with an internet connection. This study has been approved by ethics committees at Rutgers University, the University of Bath and the University of Sussex. All study details and to take part, click Project SLEEP (qualtrics.com). Dr Chanel Fallon, form the Department of Mechanical Engineering, took part in the VC's Research Day2024.

Characterising engineering materials under extreme dynamic load conditions

Her research focuses on the study of materials and structures under extreme dynamic loading conditions, from high-speed impact to explosive blast events. Her unique experiments reveal insights into material behaviour under extreme loads and temperatures, to gain better understanding for safety-critical design. Chanel shared findings from her work on civilian infrastructure (protecting concrete from fragmentation using elastomer coating) and aerospace materials (experimenting with a cryogenically-cooled gas gun).

This free and informal design workshop will introduce you to the principles of fire safety in buildings, and let you apply these in a design challenge. The talk is led by three fire engineers at Arup, with backgrounds in architecture, civil engineering and mechanical engineering. This is open both architecture, civil engineering and mechanical engineering students !

It will also be an opportunity to meet the fire team at Arup, and soon they will be advertising for summer placements for 2024 - so also come along if you are thinking about getting some summer work experience.
