I get asked quite a lot, what is a trigger point/ muscle knot?

You know a trigger point when you touch one. Have you ever had a “friend” give you a massage and instead of being thankful that another human being is willing to touch you, you wince in pain as they touch certain parts of your upper shoulders or middle-to-upper back? You know what I'm talking about. Those hot spots where any touch is painful and usually cause you to leap or squirm away uncontrollably… well that's a trigger point.

📍TRIGGER POINTS.
Trigger points, also known as trigger sites or muscle knots, are described as hyper-irritable spots in skeletal muscle that are associated with palpable nodules in taut bands of muscle fibers.

Pain frequently radiates from these points of local tenderness to broader areas, sometimes distant from the trigger point itself. Practitioners claim to have identified reliable referred pain patterns which associate pain in one location with trigger points elsewhere.

Compression of a trigger point may elicit local tenderness, referred pain, or local twitch response. The local twitch response is not the same as a muscle spasm. This is because a muscle spasm refers to the entire muscle contracting whereas the local twitch response also refers to the entire muscle but only involves a small twitch, no contraction.

📍WHAT CAN CAUSE A TRIGGER POINT?

As if you even had to ask. Trigger Points are those tiny knots that develop in a muscle when it is injured or overworked, commonly a cause of most joint pain, they are known to cause headaches, neck and jaw pain, low back pain, tennis elbow and carpal tunnel syndrome.

📍WHAT TO DO?

We have trigger points and knots in our fascia that have parts of us all wound-up. We need to work them, we can do this with sports massage therapy or self massage release, this can release tension in allowing the fascia to move freer. This in turn provides increased range of motion, reduction of pain, lessening of inflammation and stiffness within soft tissues, as well is ideal for post-workout recovery and maintaining overall, “good” functionality of the muscular system.

DID YOU KNOW?

There is three different types of muscles in the human body? 💪🏼

🔴Striated or Skeletal Muscles: Striated muscles are responsible for all the movements of body parts that are present throughout the body.

🔴Non-Striated or Smooth Muscles: Smooth muscles are responsible for the movement in internal organs such as the stomach, intestine, and uterus. They are involuntary and controlled by the autonomic nervous system.

🔴Cardiac Muscles: Cardiac muscles are located in the walls of heart. They are also called myocardium. The rhythmic contraction of cardiac muscles is regulated by the SA node which helps in performing coordinated contractions that allow the heart to pump blood through the circulatory system.

Type of muscle based on muscle action 💪🏼

✨Voluntary Muscles: The muscles that can be controlled at our will are called voluntary muscles. They are attached to our bones and provide movement to the body parts. Therefore, they are also known as skeletal muscles.

✨Involuntary Muscles: The muscles that cannot be controlled at one’s will are called involuntary muscles. They are found in our internal organs like the oesophagus, stomach, intestines, etc.

5 reasons to get a sports massage.

BETTER WORKOUTS!
Less stressed muscles give beter range of motion and your body will be more efficient at building muscle and burning calories.

RELAXED STATE OF MIND!
Research has shown that massage helps lower levels of stress hormones while at the same time boosting those “feel good” neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin and endorphins.

BETTER SLEEP! Not only will regular massage help you feel good, you’ll also sleep better due to less pain and a boost in serotonin.

ELIMINATE PAIN!
Deep tissue massage will work out the knots from stressed, overworked muscles and connective tissue (fascia) to alleviate immediate pain, as well as chronic joint and muscle pain. It also promotes faster healing by increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation.

IMPROVE OVERALL HEALTH!
In addition to benefiting muscle and tissue health, deep tissue massage positively affects your overall health by decreasing blood pressure and improving lung function.

Should you book in for a SPORTS MASSAGE or DEEP TISSUE?

Massage promotes relaxation and calmness of the mind, but it also acts as therapy for the body by releasing tight muscles and improving mobility through touch and manipulation of soft tissue. Two of the most common types of massage are deep tissue and sports massage. Although there are similarities between the two types of therapeutic massage, we’re giving the rundown on sports massage vs deep tissue to help you determine the best massage therapy for your needs.

what is sports massage?

Sports massage caters to athletic patients of all types, professional, collegiate, and high-school level players – even people who exercise regularly and have an active lifestyle. Sports massage therapy is a more focused deep tissue massage and may focus on a certain area of the body. It uses a combination of deep and light modalities to loosen muscle knots, improve blood flow, and prevent lactic acid buildup.

Sports massage techniques use deep tissue and stretching movements on the muscle-tendon junctions to provide certain advantages to enhance athletic performance:

-Pre-game warm-ups and post-game cooldowns
-Heal and prevent sport injury
-Improving flexibility
-Quicker recovery time between games

Deep tissue massage

Deep tissue massage therapy focuses on full-body relaxation by applying more pressure on the deepest layers of muscle tissue. The deep tissue massage technique relieves small, newer areas of muscular tension in the tissue and break up adhesions in the fascia (the connective tissue surrounding your bones, muscles, and joints.)

Patients prefer deep tissue massage therapy for its many benefits:

Muscle relaxation
Reduced chronic pain
Lower stress levels
Decreased tension in the upper back, shoulders, and neck
Pain relief in lower back and relieves muscle tension

At BODYWORX we can cater to both and MORE! We can also tone it down and just provide a general relaxing massage, we also provide dry cupping, dry needling and iastm/graston technique.

Feeling up for it? Do you want to feel FRESH, MOVE BETTER, RELAXED, less ACHES and PAINS?

Dry needling is a technique therapists use for the treatment of pain and movement impairments. The technique uses a "dry" needle, one without medication or injection, inserted through the skin into areas of the muscle.

Other terms commonly used to describe dry needling, include trigger point dry needling, and intramuscular manual therapy.

Dry needling is not acupuncture, a practice based on traditional Chinese medicine and performed by acupuncturists. Dry needling is a part of modern Western medicine principles and supported by research.

What is a trigger?
A trigger point is a taut band of skeletal muscle located within a larger muscle group. Trigger points can be tender to the touch, and touching a trigger point may cause pain to other parts of the body.

Why dry needling?
Therapists use dry needling to release or inactivate trigger points to relieve pain or improve range of motion. Preliminary research supports that dry needling improves pain control, reduces muscle tension, and normalizes dysfunctions of the motor end plates, the sites at which nerve impulses are transmitted to muscles. This can help speed up the patient's return to active rehabilitation.

WHAT IS IASTM AND WHAT DOES IT DO?

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, also known as ”IASTM” for short is a process in which the clinician uses a set of ergonomically designed hand held instruments to break down the scar tissue and fascial restrictions in soft tissue (muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia ). The instruments you see in the photo are made of surgical grade stainless steel. Hypoallergenic aqueous cream or massage oil is used to facilitate gliding of the instrument along the muscle, tendon etc. during treatment. The technique itself is said to have evolved from a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine called Gua Sha. IASTM is a procedure that is growing rapidly in popularity due to both the effectiveness and efficiency 0f the technique.

Once the damaged areas are detected, the instruments are used to deliver controlled microtrauma to the affected area. The purpose of the microtrauma is to stimulate a local inflammatory response, which initiates reabsorption of excessive scar tissue and facilitates a cascade of healing activities. Adhesions within the soft tissue that may have developed as a result of surgery, immobilization, muscle tears, or repetitive strain etc., are broken down, allowing the patient to regain function and range of movement. This treatment is a little intense, but it is extremely effective. It is somewhat similar to ”deep tissue massage”, but I always feel more is achieved in a shorter time-frame with IASTM technique .

If you are interested or in need of this treatment, get in contact and we will be happy to help, Regards David.

what is dry cupping?
-Dry cupping is a traditional Chinese medicine that has been very a effective treatment and been around for many years, Essentially it is a practice in which the therapist puts special cups on a area of the skin to create suction. This causes the tissue beneath the cup to be drawn up and swell causing increase in blood flow to affected area. Enhanced blood flow under the cups draws impurities and toxins away from the nearby tissues and organs towards the surface for elimination.

Benefits of dry cupping.
-Can help reduce pain and inflammation.
-Used for relaxation, well being and deep tissue.
-Improves blood flow.
-Encourages release of toxins.
-Help relief tension in the muscle.

At bodyworx we can provide dry cupping treatment if you think you may benefit from it get i touch! Not sure send me a pm or contact me on whatsapp on 07711171077.
