Dr Tiernan McCaughery from Co Tyrone will make history today when he graduates with the first industry-based PhD of its kind!

In 2014, School of Maths and Physics at Queen's University Belfast introduced its first industry-based Engineering Doctorate (EngD) programme, in partnership with the University of Glasgow, Seagate Technologies, and the Irish Photonic Integration Centre.

This year, Dr Tiernan McCaughery, who has a lifelong passion for exploring the possibilities offered by science, becomes the first to graduate from this programme.

โ€œAs I was the first student from the School of Mathematics and Physics to undertake EngD research, it felt daunting but exciting. Similar to a conventional PhD, I was able to attend many conferences, and travel to various universities to collaborate. However, the added value of this industry-orientated project allowed me to collaborate with both engineering professionals and academic researchers.โ€

The gap between industry and academia is getting smaller year on year. A prime example of this is with Queenโ€™s being a major stakeholder in a number of partnerships such as SmartNanoNI and the Advanced Material Innovation Centre (AMIC) which began construction this year.

Tiernan now graduates with a doctorate in Engineering with his thesis: โ€œFabrication, Characterisation, and Integration of Plasmonic Materials towards Next Generation Data Storage Technology at the Industrial Scaleโ€, which is a comprehensive research piece in growing the modern data storage capabilities which underpin the internet.

Following graduation, Tiernan will continue his work with Seagate Technology where he will build on his thesis research, discovering new ways to improve the data storage capabilities within hard-drive technology.

๐ŸŒŸ Igniting the spark of science in young minds! ๐ŸŒŸ

Our students from the School of Maths and Physics at Queen's University Belfast have embarked on an inspiring journey with the SOPHia Project! ๐Ÿš€

The SOPHia Project aims to introduce the awe-inspiring world of physics to primary school pupils. By making physics engaging and accessible, we hope to instil a passion for science from a young age.

๐ŸŽ During our visits, we unveil the magic behind everyday phenomena with captivating experiments and stories of famous scientists like Sir Isaac Newton and rocket scientist Annie Easley.

Remember the thrill of watching a tablet fizz in water? Imagine that, but with the added excitement of shooting it up to explode due to pressure! Or the mesmerising beauty of a plasma ball, demonstrating the concept of electricity and plasma. โšก๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฎ

We believe that physics is not just a subject, but a fascinating exploration of the world around us. So, we are proud to have an opportunity to inspire our young generation to embrace the wonders of science, because the future of science begins here! ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿ‘ฆ
