Sol Cafe

We have nutritious Pay-As-You-Feel vegan food, events, support groups and more! Wheelchair accessible

Sol cafe is a safe and sober wheelchair accessible LGBTIQA+ community cafe space in Birmingham city centre for marginalised communities to meet, eat together and share skills!

24/05/2023

It has been a long time.

Much has happened. Healing has taken place and we are now coming back with a new version of sol cafe.

We are embarking on a journey to create a space for the 50+ from our community.

A space where you can find information about aging gracefully as a trans person, yoga classes catered for the elder qu**rs. Story and skills sharing from the older generations as a gift to the younger ones.

Tomorrow evening we are holding space for the Sol Cafe community to process the statements made by previous directors and Back to Books Brum last week. It will be facilitated by Paul and by community members, not by anyone involved in the statements last week.

There'll be space to just listen to people's thoughts.
There'll also be some statements shared in response to what was raised last week and statements on the status of the cafe.
These will be shared digitally afterwards.
We hope you can join us, we'll keep you updated as to next steps.
Love, Sol Cafe x

Did you know that all of us at Sol Cafe are volunteers?

We rely solely on donations to keep the cafe going and offer all the loveliness, workshops and check-ins.

We mainly get our food from the amazing who redistributes food that would go to waste otherwise. They've been supporting us from day one. And we appreciate them so much for that.

Being pay as you feel, we want to include everyone to have a hot meal. It does not mean that it's free, everything has a cost, getting the food to the cafe, paying the bills, etc... If you feel you can afford to give more than the suggested donation for the food and drinks, please do!

We appreciate any kind of support; follows, shares, volunteering time, running events, helping in the cafe, donations, ideas and more!

Any donations go back into the cafe to keep it running, to keep on offering this caring space for our community. You can find links in our bio to our donation pages.

Thank you so much to all the lovely souls who've been with us, supporting and holding the space, getting involved, bringing their beautiful energy to make the cafe what it is today! If you'd like to come help the cafe thrive, we have a volunqueer application form on the website, we love working with you and create this wonderful radical community space 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

QTIPOC check in
TODAY 6pm -8pm

Confidentially is part of the check-in. All that is shared should stay in the session.

An object usually called “Talisman” goes from person to person that grants the right of the holder to share.

The person with the talisman is invited to share with the group. Once they have decided to stop their sharing, the talisman will wander to the person next to them.

A sharing can take on any form, verbal or nonverbal and in any language. People are invited to be vulnerable, honest and share whatever it is they are feeling. Some people may find that singing or just making a sound is the most authentic way of expressing their truth.

There should not be commenting or discussing of what other people have shared. One should not build on what other people have said.

People listening should not comment or interrupt a sharing. There are however ways to show appreciation towards what resonates, such as clicking fingers or doing a “ssss” sound.

A sharing should not be about another person. Instead people are invited to form sentences beginning “I feel/I am/I have/In my heart…”. Always speak from the "I".

A sharing can go on for as long as the talisman is held. As long as the person holds the talisman they have the right to share. It might take people a few sentences to truly hear what their heart is saying.

A sharing is voluntary. You can just be a witness to the space - a sharer can remain silent or choose to just pass on the talisman as soon as they get it.

Some details are up to the individual facilitation of the Check-in and might differ.
Sometimes a theme may develop but just as often there may not be any theme.
Although a heart circle is not formalised therapy, the sharing, witnessing and being witnessed can be incredibly healing and transformative for each individual.

⚠️Each heart circle has a defined start and end time and it is important for you to be there at the start so as to be a part of the “flow” and process.
⚠️Feel free to arrive 30minutes earlier to meet and interact with others.
