Over a decade ago HCA Healthcare UK was the first independent provider in the UK to carry out a TAVI procedure. This is a minimally invasive type of cardiac procedure to treat aortic stenosis, which works by replacing a narrowed aortic valve to improve blood flow in the heart.
Since then, we’ve continually developed our cardiac services across our hospitals and today we carry out more cardiac procedures than any other independent provider.
Earlier this year we extended our cardiac department to The Harborne Hospital, and this week structural heart specialists, Prof Sagar Doshi and Mr Adnan Nadir, along with our theatre team, carried out the first TAVI procedure at the hospital.
“It’s a privilege to be able offer patients access to TAVI and other innovative cardiac procedures at The Harborne Hospital. We were able to carry out the procedure under conscious sedation, rather than general anaesthetic, and the patient was able to go home the next day.
The hybrid theatre here is equipped with the latest technology, and the theatre and nursing team are committed to providing the highest quality of surgical and post-operative care. This means we can carry out both routine and complex procedures. As a consultant it’s very reassuring to know that my patients have access to this level of treatment and care.” - Prof Sagar Doshi, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist and TAVI Director.

Last week we hosted our first robotic-assisted surgery observation day, led by Mr El-Gizawy in collaboration with Intuitive.
Mr El-Gizawy and our theatre team welcomed surgical colleagues from University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, to observe 4 gynaecological surgeries using the da Vinci Xi robot. These included robotic assisted hysterectomies, myomectomy and surgical treatment for endometriosis.
“It is a real privilege to offer observational opportunities to colleagues who want to train in robotic-assisted surgery. Training more surgeons means that more patients can benefit from this minimally invasive surgical technique.”
A huge thank you to our theatre team and Mr El-Gizawy for sharing their expertise.

Today we’re sharing Graeme’s story. Shortly before his 70th birthday Graeme began experiencing stomach pain and visited his GP. After some tests, he received an unexpected and incidental diagnosis of prostate cancer. Graeme sought the expertise of Mr Peter Cooke, Consultant Urological Surgeon, and was the first patient to be operated on using the da Vinci Xi robot at The Harborne Hospital.
“Mr Cooke was great and went through what the procedure entailed…The benefits of having robotic assisted surgery were explained as being more precise, less invasive and having a faster recovery time. The expertise and experience of Mr Cooke gave me absolute re-assurance that this was the best option for me.”
Following his surgery Graeme was able to go home the next day and is looking forward to making a full recovery.

👀 We bumped into Dr Mauro Lencioni, Consultant Cardiologist and some of our theatre team up on the 1st floor. Mauro has been in theatres with the team, carrying out an Atrial Fibrillation Ablation, in our state-of-the-art hybrid theatre.
Atrial Fibrillation (AF or AFib) is a type of heart arrhythmia, which can make your heart beat too slowly, too quickly or irregularly. Common symptoms include palpitations, dizziness or feeling faint, tiredness, and shortness of breath.
Ablation is a common treatment for AF. It is a minimally invasive procedure, where thin flexible catheters (tubes) are inserted into your veins in your groin. The catheters are then moved up to the right area in your heart. During the procedure, heat known as radiofrequency energy, or freezing known as cryoablation, is used to destroy the area of the your heart that is causing the arrhythmia. This blocks the abnormal electrical signals in that part of your heart.
Dr Lencioni has carried out thousands of ablations during his career, to find out more about his expertise, visit his profile: https://www.hcahealthcare.co.uk/finder/specialists/dr-mauro-lencioni-1

I am proud to be a member of this community and I am constantly inspired by the meaningful contribution our nurses and midwives make, and by the expertise and the kindness and compassion they show every day.”
Carol Kefford OBE, Chief Nursing Executive.
So here's to all of our incredible nurses and midwives across HCA Healthcare UK - thank you for your dedication to exceptional patient care.
📸 A few images from our celebrations!

It gives me and our Hotel Services Team great pride to facilitate and create an environment where our nursing teams can provide the exceptional care they provide to all of our patients" - Paulo - Head of Hotel Services.
This week we have been celebrating our incredible nurses at The Harborne Hospital. However we recognise that it takes our whole team to make sure that the hospital is a safe and welcoming environment, supporting our nurses and clinical teams to make sure they have everything they need to give our patients the best possible care.
Along with Paulo we would like to say a huge thank you to all of our teams for everything you do and for your continued commitment to the care and improvement of human life.
"My ultimate dream is to become a nurse, I have been caring for my mum who has multiple sclerosis (MS) since I was 14 years old, so I have always dreamt of becoming an MS nurse. Being a nurse would mean the absolute world to me. I am inspired by our amazing nursing teams every day, and a huge ambition for me is being able to help people and go the extra mile to ensure people are well cared for and happy. It gives me a heart-warming feeling knowing I can help people to feel better and something that really comes naturally to me.
To have this opportunity and the support and encouragement from the team here is amazing and I hope it inspires others not to give up on their dreams!" - Lauren
A special shout out to Lauren, an exceptional member of our housekeeping team, we're delighted to share that Lauren will be starting her nursing course in September supported by The Harborne Hospital. We can't wait to see her embark this exciting chapter of her career.
❤️ Ahead of on Sunday 12th May, we will be spending the week celebrating our inspirational nursing colleagues, here at The Harborne Hospital.
We recently caught up with Kim, Surgical Inpatients Ward Manager to find out more about what being a nurse means to her.
"I've been a nurse for 13 years, my career started in trauma and orthopaedics, before moving on to a variety of roles including community nursing and then inpatient haematology and oncology nursing. This is where I found my real passion for leading people, and now I am the Surgical Inpatients Ward Manager at The Harborne Hospital.
The best thing about my job is caring for people and being able to watch other people grow and flourish. Watching a patient recover from an operation and being able to live a fulfilled life, or watching my team grow and become leaders of the future.
I am really excited about the future of nursing, there are more and more opportunities to grow our skills and take on specialist roles. This means we can develop our expertise and support the unique needs of patients. It's great to see nursing get this recognition, moving away from traditional conventions, and taking on a more expert role as part of the wider multidisciplinary team."
👋 Meet Lynette ITU Ward Manager at The Harborne Hospital.
“I have worked at HCA Healthcare UK in ITU for over twenty years. My career as an ITU nurse started as a Sister, I progressed to ITU Clinical Practice Facilitator, and now I am the ITU Ward Manager at The Harborne Hospital.
In ITU we care for patients who need the highest level of complex care, it’s challenging but incredibly rewarding, especially to see patients recover and move out of ITU. Working in ITU you need to be a team player, I am really proud of how cohesively we work together to make sure that our patients receive the highest quality evidence based care.
A very special moment in my career so far was being recognised as a finalist in the HCA Healthcare Excellence in Nursing Awards in 2021. I was recognised for professional mentoring, I really enjoy mentoring and developing others, so this recognition was very special to me.
My advice to anyone looking to specialise in ITU would be to follow your heart. If you are proactive, passionate, and want to be the best you can possibly be – then do it!”
We're so grateful to have Lynette working as part of as our amazing ITU team at The Harborne Hospital!

This we are sharing the most common symptoms of bowel cancer. Being aware of the signs and symptoms makes it easier to spot any changes and have them checked, they may not be anything serious but the sooner bowel cancer is detected the easier it is to treat. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, or feel as though something isn’t right, always see your GP or a Consultant Specialist.
