💛 During we’re highlighting some of the ways we support our youngest patients going through radiotherapy treatment.

🧩 The hospital charity provides every child with a Little Linac – a miniature building block set that children can use to build a replica of a radiotherapy machine, CT scanner and MRI scanner that children with a cancer diagnosis would see throughout their treatment. This encourages children to learn about their treatment through play, building an awareness of the different types of machines, making it less scary.

👨‍👦 When Arlo was going through his radiotherapy treatment, he was given a Little Linac. His dad, Stephen said, “You can often feel helpless as a parent in these emotional situations, so to have something to distract Arlo with was amazing. He recognised the Tomotherapy unit (the radiotherapy machine, that looks similar to the image above) from the Little Linac set when having his treatment, making it less scary for him and less emotional for us. He also took it home to show his family and friends. We’re so proud of our brave little man.”

🫶 You can also purchase a Little Linac set from our charity hubs and for every set or any other toy purchased, the charity will fund one for a child going through treatment.

We are delighted to welcome multi-award-winning chef, Matt Davies to Fisher House today to cook a special lunch for patients, families and staff at staying at our military home away from home.

Matt was joined by Michelin Star Chef’s Luke Tipping (Simpsons Birmingham) and Jonathan Howe (Lumiere Cheltenham)

Seven years ago, Matt was tragically injured at work and treated by Burns and Plastics Surgeon, Colonel Mark Foster at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Through his treatment he discovered Fisher House and the important work it does. Matt wanted to give something back and thank the incredible team who cared for him and has been fundraising for Fisher House ever since!

After nearly 70 operations, Matt made the brave decision to have his left arm amputated earlier this year. He is continuing to use his love and knowledge of cooking to raise money for Fisher House to support military patients and families at their time of need.

💜 September is and we’d like you to meet Natasha who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer earlier this year and received amazing care from the team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

💙 Natasha’s cancer journey began with a small lymph node, which had been raised for several months. She was sent for an ultrasound scan which showed calcifications on her thyroid and several on her lymph nodes. Natasha was told she needed a total thyroidectomy and left neck dissection. Having had no previous illness and being someone who ate healthily and exercised regularly, it was a difficult diagnosis to get her head around. The operation went well, and her surgeon was confident they had removed all of the cancer. Unfortunately, there were some complications following the surgery, but the team were incredible and took great care of Natasha.

💚 Natasha recently saw her oncologist, who told her the amazing news that no thyroid or cancer cells are detectable, and other than regular check-ups her treatment is complete. Natasha is recovering well and wears her scar with pride. She has started running again, something she enjoyed before her surgery, and has taken on the couch to 5k challenge to raise money for the hospital charity and say thank you for the exceptional care she received throughout her treatment journey.

🫶 Natasha said: “The nurses and doctors took such fantastic care of me. Some of the complications involved the research team and I was really touched that they visited me on the ward to reassure me they were on the case. The care I continue to receive at the QE goes above and beyond, so please help me raise money to ensure others can receive the same care.”

🏃‍♀️ You can support Natasha with her running challenge and help her reach her fundraising target by visiting her JustGiving page here ⤵

💜 We’d like to give a shout out to the village of Norton in Doncaster, South Yorkshire who are hosting their annual Scarecrow Festival over the Bank Holiday weekend and raising money for Fisher House. THANK YOU for your support! 🫶

👻 The festival includes a scarecrow trail around the village and all of the money raised is donated to a different charity each year.

💗 Fisher House has been chosen as the charity for this year’s festival, nominated by last year’s winning scarecrow entrants. They decided they wanted to support Fisher House and the wonderful work it does for the armed forces serving personnel, veterans and their families. There are a few veterans living in the village who have benefitted personally from Fisher House, so it is a cause close to their hearts.

📸 Here are some of the wonderful scarecrows from last year’s festival – we're looking forward to seeing this year’s entrants!
