Our ‘Staff Star’ initiative celebrates the fantastic work of different staff members. Rashid was our last Staff Star and it was up to him to decide who to nominate next.

🚲 Eurilait are kicking off their fundraising in style with a cycle from Somerset to Paris this September! 🚲

Eurilait, one of the UK's leading suppliers of quality speciality cheese and dairy products, are partnering with Young Somerset and are committed to supporting the charity for the next two years!

All money raised from their fundraising will go directly to supporting our Jigsaw service, any donations, big or small, will make a massive difference to our Jigsaw team and the lives of the young people we can support.

☀️ Hauser & Wirth Summer Fete 2024 ☀️

On Saturday, some of our Young Somerset team joined thousands of visitors to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Hauser & Wirth Somerset in Bruton.

Hauser & Wirth have been a great support of Somerset Trust for Arts & Recreation in the past, so to continue that partnership we were invited along to join other local charities and businesses to share the brilliant work that we do.

It was a fantastic day for all the family, from pop up shops, food stalls and live music to beautiful sculpture galleries and gardens to explore.

The best part is, it is FREE to visit!

Thank you to everyone involved for organising such a lovely day 🙂 We look forward to working together more in the future!

🌟 Thank You Clarke Willmott 🌟

Back in June, the brilliant team at Clarke Willmott hosted a fantastic rounders event to raise money for Young Somerset. Almost 20 teams from Taunton came together for the event including local businesses, staff and young people from Young Somerset to raise an incredible £2,000! 🎉

Young Somerset didn’t quite take the win, but a great time was had by all. Massive thank you to Clarke Willmott for organising and to all the players, bakers, businesses who donated raffle prizes and everyone who made the event a success.

" We had young people from across the Umbrella groups (Bridgwater, Taunton and Highbridge), some of whom were meeting for the first time. The young people enjoyed competing with the adult teams that entered and were spurred on by the wonderful staff that volunteered to help out." - Rashid (Umbrella Senior Youth Worker)

All proceeds from the event will go to supporting and developing our Umbrella service and are greatly appreciated.

🏆 Update from Lewis - Countryside Worker Apprentice 🏆

"Lewis has recently completed and received his certificate for his apprenticeship Countryside Worker, Level 2. Lewis worked incredibly hard to achieve this and has moved on to a new job working in grounds maintenance.

🌟 Introducing our next Staff Star – Rashid, our Umbrella Senior Youth Worker!🌟

“Not just Young Somerset but Youth Work on a whole really transforms lives.”

This is Alex’s Story:

I am a new father - I did not fathom the impact that would have on my time and effort to do things in my life, but it is one of the best things I have ever experienced. I am also a skateboarder of about 25 years and a youth worker of 14 years. The learning environments that both of these spaces create, being non-linear, is really interesting and the more I studied both the more I found them having similarities.

I moved to the Southwest at the end of 2020 and I was fortunate enough to start an incredible new job. At Young Somerset I was doing face to face work as the team leader of Jigsaw - supporting young people to reduce hospital readmissions for su***de attempts and self-harm across the county. That service exceeded everyone's expectations keeping readmission rates down to about 10% of those referred to the service which has led to it becoming a staple in the county's fabric of support.

We never did anything new - simply mentoring to support young people to feel more confident and make their own informed decisions for change. I do not know if I am as proud of that as I am of my little boy but knowing that the work we do every day has such a significant impact is what gets me out of bed in the morning - it is a huge motivational factor. I am not doing face to face work anymore as I was lucky enough to get promoted here and oversee some other areas too.

Nobody wants to be that angry, upset or frightened that they want to harm anybody or themselves but that is the space some people are left in. We try and change that - the people I work alongside are amazing and I am thankful every day for the profession I found myself in along this bumpy road of mine.
