🌟 Support The Bristol Cable: Keep Independent Journalism Thriving in Bristol! 🌟

Hey everyone,

Did you know that our fellow cooperative The Bristol Cable has just celebrated its 10th anniversary as our city's independent, reader-owned newspaper? 🎉 But to keep going strong for another decade, they need our help.

They’re 97% of the way there and just £2k (or about *20 annual memberships*) away from increasing their income by £60,000. If they make it by August 31st this will unlock a bonus grant of £40,000. This funding is crucial for continuing their work holding power to account and telling the stories that matter most to our community.

Here’s how you can help:

Option 1: If you’re not yet a member, you can join today! Any amount is helpful, but if you can stretch to an annual membership, it’s extra helpful as they get the full payment upfront, getting them closer to the bonus grant goal. Join here: https://thebristolcable.org/join

Option 2: You can also gift a Bristol Cable membership to a friend or family member. It’s a great way to spread the word and support independent journalism. Gift a membership here: https://membership.thebristolcable.org/gift

Every contribution, no matter the size, helps keep proper journalism alive in Bristol. Let’s ensure The Bristol Cable continues to thrive for another 10 years!

Thanks for your support! 💪

📽️ The last film in our first Keller Kino series! 📽️

“Why do I stand on the stage like this? Because I am a mental disorder of the 20th century,” declares eccentric musician Huang Dawang, also a noise performer, a music aficionado and a member of the music label, Kandala Records; a pillar of Taiwan’s underground music scene who denies himself as an artist, and who refuses to define what art is."

TPE-Tics is an intimate look into Huang’s way of life – incredibly different from the norm, largely incompatible with society. As links between Huang’s past trauma and present creations are revealed, his psychological anxiety is at once enlightening and heartbreaking. Despite his bouts of depression, Huang’s humour and witty introspection relieves the melancholy. More than merely music, the film examines human experiences and nuanced values that are precious yet rarely accessible.

The third and last screening of Kino's "Life of Elsewhere" series, programmed by , is a Taiwanese artist documentary directed by Jessica Wan-Yu LIN. We invite you to join this last segment of most likely otherwise unscreened films in our basement, as always, with an option of a led discussion at the end.

Thank you so much to all of you who have come to this first series of films! This is such a unique opportunity and we appreciate all your support in making it a reality 💖

As always, tickets are available on Headfirst!

📽️ A little last minute promotion for our next Keller Kino event! 📽️

"I am a singer in a punk band. I choose to do this, because it is necessary for this society. I will always stand opposed to the force of evil, right on this stage"
Wu Wei, singer of SMZB生命之餅

Our second film in the series is "Never Release My Fist", a feature documentary by Oscar nominee Shuibo Wang, on the life and music of a group of rebellious punk rockers in China. Wu Wei, the singer of punk band SMZB, is also an initiative figure of punk rock in Wuhan, China. Under his influence, Wuhan became China's punk capital in the late 1990s. To resist the authoritarian system with sound and noise, Wu Wei and his punk peers become an even more powerful behemoth.

Translation and subtitles for this film have been kindly provided by our very own ! This is such a unique experience and we hope you'll join us! 💖

Tickets are available on Headfirst! Check out our story for the link!

Our mouthwatering vegan BLT is served with crispy vegan bacon, fresh lettuce and tomato, and our homemade vegan mayonnaise! All on malted grain bread! 😋

Make it a meal! ✨ Add one of our sides to your BLT, like rosemary chips, curley fries, or a side salad, for an extra £2.00! Available to eat in or takeaway!

I'd say see you at lunchtime, but since we serve the BLT (and all our other delicious sandwiches) all day, you can grab one whenever you like! 💖

📽️ Finally, Cafe Kino is doing its name justice and presenting the first of a series of films for our Keller Kino event series! 📽️

Organised by Kino members, this series invites you to themed screenings focusing on films that may otherwise not find a home on screen elsewhere in Bristol/the UK.

For this first season in March entitled Life of Elsewhere, Kino co-op member Howl has programmed 3 films to be screened in our small but cosy basement. The aim of the series is to formulate a scope to gaze at how artists in East Asia, Taiwan, and China position themselves in society and develop/redevelop their method of making art.

The screening will include an introduction by Howl and a chance to discuss the documentary afterwards.

The second and third screenings are on the 8th and 15th of March, and we would love to see you there!

Show your headfirst ticket at the counter to get 15% OFF all food and drink on the 3rd March!!

Lots of love,

Mika and Howl from the Cafe Kino team!

Join us in solidarity with Palestine for this film screening of Jumana Manna's 2022 film 'Foragers'. All funds raised will be donated to Medical Aid for Palestinians. More information at https://www.map.org.uk/.

About the film:
"Foragers depicts the drama, pleasures and difficulties in collecting wild food in occupied Palestine. Shot in the Golan Heights, the Galilee, and Jerusalem, this documentary melds dramatised scenes, reportage and archival footage to portray the impact of Israeli nature protection laws on traditional Palestinian food customs. Following the plants from the wild to the kitchen, from chases with Israeli state forces to the courtroom, this documentary highlights the resilience of Palestinian food culture despite arcane restrictions." – Bristol Palestine Film Festival (adapted from official description)

After watching the film, there'll be space for discussion and an introduction to herbalism for collective care. We’ll explore a range of different medicine making methods –from glycerites and tinctures, to balms, teas and decoctions– and focus on some local plant allies with Bristol-based foraging herbalists Maria & Ruby.

Thank you to the Bristol Palestine Film Festival for supporting us in organising this event https://bristolpff.org.uk/.

The event is Pay What You Can and tickets are now available on Headfirst! 'Foragers' film & herbalism for collective care at Cafe Kino https://hdfst.uk/e100513
