Donington GP - Round 8 - Final round.
Friday test day - Spent the day on the CB500 and felt good!
CB500 Race 1 Saturday:
Started 6th on the grid.
Got a great start and led the race for a couple of corners before Lewis Smart went ahead 😆 managed to stick with Lewis for the whole race. Extremely happy. P2 - (1.48.2)
CB500 Race 2 Sunday:
Very similar to Race 1. Lewis and I both had our own race with a big gap behind us. P2.
(1.47.9)
CB500 Race 3 Sunday:
It was going well.. Spent the race battling for 3rd with James Bailey. Last lap and it began to rain on part of the track (McLeans) 4 of us in the front pack crashed out the race before it was reg flagged due to the rain! DNF
CB500 Race 4 Sunday:
WET RACE. After crashing in the previous race I went out on the wet bike with the intentions of finishing and not crashing. The bike cut out mid race 😆 DNF
Club 600 Endurance
Went in to the endurance race with no real pressure. We were comfortably 2nd in the championship.
I started the race and had a brilliant start. I managed to get up to first in class by the first corner and went up 16 places overall in the first lap.
Held P1 for my stint.
James, Ian and Rachel all did their stints and I then went out again for the last 25 minutes.
I was desperate to get us back from P6 up to a podium but it was a hard ask, especially with the safety car not playing to our favour.
We finished P4. I did however set my fastest lap of the race (in the dark 😂) which was 1.40.8
I can safely say Donington is my favourite track!
Very happy to have come 2nd in the Club 600 championship and somehow came 4th in the National 600 championship.
Thank you everyone for all of your help this season with the endurance. It has been a huge team effort.
Thank you to my teammates ATO Racing and James Alex. Thank you Joe Rodman & Serena Mockford for the amazing pit board help, Michael Quainton for the pit stop timekeeping & Gabby Carter for the bacon sandwiches and tea!
Thank you to my family for all of your support every race weekend and in between. I couldn’t do any of it without you. Abi Round, George & William.
Also big shout out to our brilliant photographer Michael Wincott Photography, amazing photos all year!
Le Mans start at the endurance
What a day!
Ben came 2nd in the first CB race of the weekend against some tough competition and then the team wrapped up 2nd in the Club 600 endurance championship 🥈🥈
Let’s see what tomorrow brings… rain apparently 😂🌧️
British Mini Bikes Championship Red Lodge race report in William’s own words.
PRACTICE DAY: It was slippy and wet and had bike faults but got some track time in and learning the track that I hadn’t rode before.
SATURDAY WARM UP: Getting the new track memorised in my head did a 54.7 lap time.
QUALIFIYING: Got a brilliant tow from Leo hams and was the most confident I had felt so far which put me on P10 for the first race of the weekend. Best time 51.9
SATURDAY RACE 1: Finished 9th overall but was a little lonely doing my own thing just behind the pack infront, I was slightly slower than my qualifying time doing mostly 52s and the best of a 52.1 which put me 10th for Race 2
SUNDAY RACE 2: Got a good start straight away, keeping my position for the moment but managing to tag on to Isabelle. I did a couple of moves down the inside at Turn 1 but she was straight back through, I did that same move on lap 12 and crossed the finish line in 8th just pipping Isabelle, was such a fun battle and managed to do a 51.13 which put me 10th on grid for the next race again.
SUNDAY RACE 3: Got a decent start, Isabelle and Thomas were in sight but too far away to be involved and they were slowly creeping away. I was 8th in the race until Thomas and Isabelle collided at the last corner on the last lap which meant I finished P6 doing a 51.12. Very glad both the riders are up and ok but not nice to see at all.
Best race weekend yet, really happy with my lap times, battles and finishes this weekend. It was my first time ever being able to keep up with some other 160 riders and hope I can in the future.
William finished P6 in the final race of the weekend.
It was a bit more of a lonely race for William and an unfortunate crash between the two riders ahead of William.
A really positive weekend for William. First time at the track, he improved through the weekend, had a great battle and had lots of fun on and off the track with his friends.
William is super happy to finish P8 in race 2.
It was William’s first proper battle in the 160 class, set his best time so far and he really enjoyed the race.
Race 3 is at 2.45pm
Race 1 ✅
William finished P9
Two races to come tomorrow
William has qualified 10th. Hoping to keep up with the pack in front in race 1 coming up soon!
Qualifying 1 ✅
William shaved 3 seconds off his practice time
Qualifying 2 at 2.15pm
William’s first time at Red Lodge this weekend.
Warm up done ✅
Qualifying 1 - 11.36am
Qualifying 2 - 2.15pm
Race 1 - 4.15pm
William was at the Stretton mini bike series this weekend.
Warm up - Was going really well until I had a tank slapper out of the first corner and crashed in the last lap! Big slide along the tarmac but the airbag suit did its job (42.3)
Qualifying - Really struggled to get a clear lap but managed to qualify 5th (42.2)
Race 1 - Had an ok start but lost a place, got back past and in to P5. I spent the race chipping away and slowly catching Daniel in P4 but couldn’t quite get to him. Finished P5 (41.6)
Race 2 - Got a decent start and kept up with Daniel this time. After a few laps we both caught up with a back marker. I overtook both Daniel and the back marker in to one corner and went in to P2. Daniel kept up with me for a couple of laps and I gradually pulled a gap. My favourite race to date. Finished P2 (41.2)
Race 3 - Just before the race was due to start it began to rain. My dad and a couple of other parents went on to the track and felt the track was very greasy and not worth the risk of ruining a successful day and felt there was nothing to be learnt. We decided not to race.
Really happy with my performance. I improved as the day went on and my times were improving each session. Really enjoyed the weekend.
Mass excitement as we cross the line in 🥈🏁
A tricky day for William at Whilton Mill. We knew it would be a challenge coming in to the third day of a race weekend but with Whilton being local to us, it was a good opportunity to get some practice in.
William was settling in on his first race, progressing well and looking forward to the rest of the day. Unfortunately the following two races William stalled at the start.. very frustrating for him but we have now learnt that there is an issue with his clutch which explains a lot. Nevertheless, William used the races as learning experience and he did well to keep his head up and carry on.
Ben & William on track together.
Friday & Saturday we are at Oulton Park with No Limits Racing.
Sunday we are at Whilton Mill with British Minibikes Championship. Unfortunately William can’t make the full double header weekend but he will join in on Sunday from the back of the grid 😊
William was at Danny Webb's GP Camp yesterday at Kinsham Raceway. It was the first time back on a bike for William since his fast crash at Three Sisters. Bit of a struggle to begin with in the wet and tested the new DRC Race Leathers airbag suit out 😂 but the sun came out and a great day was had! Thank you Danny, Eddie O'Shea Racing and Evan Belford #52 for your help. And Liz Jayne Photography for the awesome photos!
