Music-making at Christ's College, Cambridge in the form of CCMS began in 1710...and many years on, the tradition continues! We welcome everyone: Christ's students, everyone across the university and the public to get involved in CCMS😊.

2022-23 has been a fabulous year and now we look back at some of our highlights before handing over to our new 2023-24 Committee🎼🎹

The annual Charles Blackham competition is open! Judged by Professor Trippett and Dr Jones and CCMS Chair Jemma. The winner will also get to perform at a Prizewinners’ recital including James Tett (winner 2022) in Easter Term. Please get in touch with Jemma at [email protected] if interested!

James Wang Recital, Chapel at 6pm

Tonight we have a recital from pianist James Wang in the Chapel at 6pm. The programme will range from Chopin and Brahms to Chick Corea and Grover Washington Jr! It promises to be a wonderful event and entry is free/open to all - hope to see you there 🎶

Nikki Iles Jazz Masterclass, Yusuf Hamied Theatre Saturday 12th February at 3pm (Changed from 4pm)

Tomorrow at 3pm, Jazz composer and pianist Nikki Iles (BEM) is giving at masterclass in the Yusuf Hamied Theatre. Nikki is a Professor at the Royal Academy of Music, holds Senior Lectureship positions at Guildhall, Leeds Conservatoire, and Middlesex University, in addition to running her own Jazz Orchestra. Her work has gained her numerous awards, most recently including a BEM (British Empire Medal) for Services to Music in the 2022 Queen’s New Years Honours, and the Ivors Composer Award for 2021.
The masterclass will run last around 90 minutes, and will feature Christ’s Jazz and other University ensembles. Entry is free and open to all so please do come and watch if you are able to!

Congratulations to our students who performed in the Charles Blackham Memorial Prize Competition yesterday afternoon! In particular to our winner, Senior Organ Scholar James Tett (Violin), and runners-up, Angel Wong (Guzheng) and Laura AlYousif (Voice).

British conductor and accompanist Paul Wynne Griffiths is on the music staff of The Royal Opera. For the Company he has conducted operas including Rigoletto, Norma, Don Giovanni, La bohème, Turandot, Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Il barbiere di Siviglia, L’Heure espagnole/Gianni Schicchi and Così fan tutte, in addition to playing continuo for numerous productions and working as a répétiteur for the Company. In the 2018/19 Season he conducts La traviata for The Royal Opera.

Griffiths studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music and the London Opera Centre before joining the music staff of The Royal Opera. Conducting engagements away from The Royal Opera include Il trovatore for Scottish Opera, L’elisir d’amore for Gothenburg Opera and Rigoletto, Cavalleria rusticana, Pagliacci, Tosca, Salome and Fidelio for the Spier Festival, South Africa. In concert he has worked with leading international orchestras, such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia, London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Opera, London Concert Orchestra, Athens State Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and Iceland Symphony Orchestra. He conducted the London premiere of Ramirez’s Misa criolla with the Royal Choral Society at the Royal Festival Hall.

Griffiths was artistic director of the BBC’s ‘Pavarotti Masterclass’. He is a visiting tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music and the National Opera Studio.
