👏 An amazing well done to Darren Utting, who made it to the Run Norwich 10k finish line last Sunday – just nine months after he received a life-saving heart transplant at Royal Papworth Hospital

👟Darren, who took on the challenge and raised over £1400 for our Charity, said:

"Run Norwich was a wonderful experience; such a well organised and marshalled event taking place through an amazingly beautiful City - that benefits so many incredible charities.

“I could not have got to the stage of even thinking of attempting to complete the run without; the selfless decision of my heart donor, their family in honouring his wishes, the phenomenal staff at Royal Papworth Hospital and my totally awesome wife, daughters, future son-in-law, brother and dad.

If I have achieved anything it is down to those people."

❤ Huge thanks to Darren and everyone who has donated to his Just Giving page. ➡️ https://bit.ly/4eiXyy3

👉 WILL YOU pass on something wonderful?

This please consider leaving a gift in your Will to our Charity.

Nearly half of our income comes from Gifts in Wills, and they help fund innovative techniques that transform the lives of Royal Papworth patients.

For example we can continue to support the DCD transplantation technique – developed by Royal Papworth Hospital

This innovative technique has enabled surgeons at the hospital to utilise donor hearts which were previously considered too damaged to transplant, leading to an increase the number of people receiving a heart transplant by almost 50% over the last five years.

A huge well done and thank you to the 25 runners and walkers that took part in the CBC 10k yesterday for our charity including two former patients who received life-saving surgery at Royal Papworth Hospital. Kouros received a heart transplant 15 years ago to the day yesterday and marked the occasion by walking the 5k. 👉We are looking forward to watching this fascinating insight into the life-saving work of Royal Papworth Hospital

Our fundraisers/supporters many of whom are patients, tell us daily how grateful they are to be able to return to a normal fulfilled life after the operation.

👍Great to see it in action.

Wonders of the Human Body 🫁📺

A new Channel 5 documentary will include an episode filmed at Royal Papworth Hospital.

Wonders of the Human Body is a three-part series, each focusing on a different part of the body.

Its final episode, to be aired on Thursday 5 September at 20:00, will focus on the lungs and follows a pulmonary endarterectomy, a highly specialised operation solely performed in the UK at Royal Papworth, which took place last year.

This surgical operation is where the blood vessels of the lungs are cleared of clot and scar material. It is a treatment option for people who have chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH).

The series is presented by the late TV presenter Dr Michael Mosley, who sadly died unexpectedly in June. Believed to be his final medical series, it will also feature a special tribute from his wife, Clare.

We look forward to everyone seeing the episode. We know it will showcase not just the excellence and compassion of our teams and our hospital, but also be a fitting tribute to Michael’s broadcasting career which he spent investigating health and fitness issues on behalf of the nation. 💙

👟👟 Jung-Wei Liao laced up his running shoes and tackled 162km of hill running within three months to raise over £1,500 for Royal Papworth Charity…and he’s not stopping there.

His fundraising includes a £500 donation from his employer Durham Magneto Optics Ltd.

🌄He took on the TEC Lake District Ultramarathon (62.63km) and Race to the Stones Ultramarathon (100km non-stop) in memory of his close friend Anthony who had Muscular Dystrophy and Pulmonary Hypertension. Anthony sadly died in June 2023, whilst waiting for a heart transplant at Royal Papworth Hospital

Jung-Wei said he always thinks of his friend when he runs and adds:

“Anthony always made people around him happy, he was very popular. I know he would be very proud of what I have achieved, and it’s been a pleasure to raise money for the hospital where he spent seven months waiting for a heart transplant – it’s given me a purpose to keep running.”

Jung-Wei's next challenge will be the 100-mile Mercian challenge in South Wales, where he is hoping to complete the race in 30-40 hours.

Huge thank you to Jung-Wei, his stamina and the generosity of his supporters will help us continue to support the Non-Beating (DCD) transplant programme at Royal Papworth Hospital.

Next weekend, Ryan will be walking 50 miles from Royal Papworth Hospital to follow his ‘Dad’s Journey Home’ – the same journey his dad, Barry, was able to make following his heart transplant at Papworth in 1991.

Barry lived another 31 years following his transplant, and Ryan is now taking on this special fundraising challenge to honour his memory:

“After his heart transplant, Dad met my Mum, got married, and had me and my brother. Papworth truly gave my dad a second life and he very much lived it. He was incredibly grateful for Papworth's fantastic work and so am I.”
