Graduate spotlight - Thomas Hutson - Kent Law School
'I am so thrilled to share that I have graduated with First Class Honours in LLB Law with a Language (Spanish) from the University of Kent. I would like to extend my thanks to my professors at Kent Law School and all those who have supported me over the past four years.
During my degree, I had the privilege of researching artificial intelligence regulation for my undergraduate dissertation. Contributing to the regulatory landscape of this transformative technology to ensure its advancements are both ethical and beneficial was a standout experience.
Chairing the University’s Hockey Club was another significant highlight during my time at University. The role allowed me to develop my managerial and interpersonal skills while helping set up the club for future successes. Heading up the hockey club wasn’t just about sport; it was about building a community, fostering friendships, and making memories. I am proud to have been a part of that.
I am grateful for all of the opportunities the University of Kent has provided for me, and looking forward I am excited to see where my legal career is going to take me!' 🎓
"These feet will make big steps” is what my mum told me when I was born and, ever since, I have indeed fulfilled that thought. Going abroad can be scary, it may make you feel lost and alone at times but, during the journey, you create so many good memories that braveness finds you and you recognize a familiar face in each soul you meet.' 🌏 ✈️

'The year abroad taught me just how resilient and disciplined I am as well as showing me that no matter how scary at first, I can do anything and everything that I put my mind to. I am so grateful for the opportunity to study abroad, and I really recommend doing it if you get the chance.’ ✈️

Take a look at a snap from Summer Ball '98. This picture was sent in by Kent alumni, Hilary Carver, who came to Kent through Clearing exactly 30 years ago this year, and now works as the Head of Event Delivery at Tottenham Hotspur F.C.. Hilary shares her story below 👇
"I first came to Kent in 1994, exactly 30 years ago. When I didn’t get the grades I expected on results day, my first reaction was to want to retake my A-levels. But when I sat down with my dad and talked through the pros and cons of different pathways, I decided to keep my options open, and a really good option came through! ☎️
I called the Kent Clearing hotline and we talked through what sorts of things I was interested in and the results I got. They offered me a place studying British and American Policy. It wasn’t the course I was originally interested in, but I saw the option to study a year abroad in America, and that was attractive to me. I also liked how close the campus was to both London and Paris - that was a huge perk. I had been to Canterbury before too and enjoyed visiting the city; I was excited by the prospect of moving away from home, as I was living in Yorkshire at the time. So, I decided to go for it.
I’m so glad I did. I never would have thought of doing that course initially but keeping my options open led me to something even better. I lived on campus in my first year; I’m still friends with some of the people I met during Freshers Week! I spent my third year in Indiana, where I took a wild module in sports marketing, and that made me realise I wanted to work in sport. ⚽
After graduating with a 2:1, I worked in events management in the UK and overseas, from Wembley Stadium to Monaco, and now work as the Head of Events Delivery at Tottenham Hotspurs Football Club. I use my degree every day when I negotiate with partners and patrons, and working in international sport is very political!
My advice to students applying through Clearing would be to stay open-minded and be positive. Clearing can give you unexpected opportunities that turn out even better than what you had originally hoped for!"

Shout out to Kent Sport Physiotherapist Vicky Annis, who recently supported Team GB's medal winning triathletes at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games! 🥇
She said: "The 31 July was an incredible day. If you haven’t seen the finish of the men’s race I would suggest you do. The way Alex Yee came back in the final kilometer to take the lead from Hayden Wilde is truly amazing. I still cannot believe I have witnessed a gold medal win for Great Britain!"
