🌳 With carpets of green mosses, ancient tree trunks, huge boulders and home to species like Pied Flycatcher – Celtic rainforests are truly a magical place for adventures. But on it’s important to realise that these forests are under great threat. 🌳

Beyond being pretty to look at, trees are vital to life on earth, here are 5 reasons as to why trees need our protection:

🌳 They provide an important habitat for wildlife.
🌳 They are crucial in the fight against climate change as they act as an excellent carbon sink.
🌳 Trees combat pollution – they keep the air we breathe clean.
🌳 Trees are beneficial for mental health; forest bathing has been found to have positive affects on one’s mental wellbeing.
🌳 Trees are great at preventing flooding.

Prynhawn da, Wales plays a globally important role for seabirds. Every year over 50% of the Manx Shearwater population nest under Welsh ground. But populations are threatend. That’s why we are calling on protecting marine life properly to stop the decline in numbers.

🐞 Ladybirds are currently enjoying the warmer-than-usual autumn – and you may have seen several reports in the last few days of copious amounts turning up in people’s houses! Usually at this time, Ladybirds such as the 7-Spotted Ladybird will have found a warm place to overwinter; but it appears that these last few days, many have been still searching for that cosy spot! Do not worry – they’re not taking over – and in the next few weeks, we expect that most Ladybirds will be settling down for a snooze until the Spring! 💤

Bore da! 🌳 Celtic Rainforests are extremely rare habitats. It’s believed that they’re more threatened than tropical rainforests. They are home to rare wildlife like red squirrels, so it’s vital that these areas are protected.

For its size, Wales has the highest diversity of lichen species in the world. With over 1200 species of lichen found here and more than 200 of these critically endangered, it is crucial that measures are put in place to improve protected areas of nature in Wales.

Sites of Special Scientific Interest are crucial for the conservation of some of Wales’ most threatened species. That’s why we're calling for an improvement to these protected areas for nature. The primary legal purpose of these designations is nature conservation.

🦇 Nature is something that all species need. Barbastelle bats are vulnerable and are on the UK Red List. They depend on woodlands to breed and forge – they rely on woodlands to survive. It’s for species like this that having legal targets for nature is crucial to save all species.

Nature isn’t just some beautiful thing to look at - we need nature. Our water, our air – it is intertwined with nature. That’s why we’re asking for legal targets to drive action by all sectors to aid nature’s recovery. Unless action is taken now, the future of Wales’ nature landscape will look very different.
