Emma Ceely Osteopath

Osteopathy treatment for adults and children. Also available in Shaftesbury, Dorset

Many people we see are in pain which is why they book appointments with us but osteopaths are also great at increasing mobility and flexibility which can prevent pain returning before it starts. You don’t need to be in pain to book an osteopathic appointment with me.

So often people say this to me like it is a revelation. Yes, we are connected, bones to soft tissues, mind to body (hopefully), one body part to another so when I treat you, I might work on areas that initially seem far away from your symptomatic area but when you feel better, you are likely to tell me it’s all connected.

So happy to be asked to treat some of the team.

Tomorrow, a little team of Newts are taking on the Three Peak Challenge in aid of Leukaemia Care: a charity close to one of the team's hearts; conquering the highest peaks in Scotland, England, and Wales within 24 hours ⛰️
https://www.justgiving.com/page/the-newt-three-peak-challenge-2024

But before they set off, we wanted to spotlight some incredible individuals who have supported them along the way:

🥾 Digby Rawlins has kindly volunteered to accompany the team, with his extensive experience in difficult challenges and amazing skills he will ensure that we stay on the straight & narrow and not only enjoy, but survive the challenge.

💪 Emma Ceeley, local Osteopath for keeping their bodies going!

🏋️‍♀️ Chris Giles, personal fitness coach for his nutritional & training advice

🚎 Leon Smallbone, our in-house Head of IT who has offered to be the designated driver.

We wish them all the best!

I found this really interesting to read and didn’t know this when I updated my first aid training recently.

This is the DEATH MASK of a young woman who drowned in the River Seine in the 1880s. As was customary in those days, her co**se was put on display in the Paris mortuary, in the hope that someone might recognize her and claim her body.

The pathologist on duty became entranced by the girl with the enigmatic half-smile, and so he commissioned a plaster cast made of her face. This mask was replicated many times over. She became known as "L'Inconnue de la Seine,” or “The Unknown Woman of the Seine.”

In 1955, a toymaker named Asmund Laerdal created what we now know as the CPR doll. Asmund wanted his mannequin to have a natural appearance. Remembering a mask on the wall of his grandparents' house many years earlier, he decided that the L'Inconnue de la Seine would become the face of Resusci Anne - the CPR doll.

So you see, this anonymous woman who drowned in the 19th century is responsible for saving many, many lives the world over. It is said that she has the most kissed face of all time.

As an osteopath, I fully agree with Ben that exercise and movement is so important to all aspects of health.

Focused!
That's what I am in my safe space.

The gym or even club sports football, rugby and running these were my places I go when nothing else made sense.

When my life would be a muddle or complicated I could always rely on the gym to take me away from everything, give me a clear head so I could approach my task in a better head space.

For any mental illness whether it's stress, anxiety, depression etc the NHS always recommends exercise as part of the process to help cope with daily troubles.

I can't comment on others all I can do is recommend and exercise has always helped me mentally. I know it's not for everyone but whether you go for a bike ride with a partner/friend along the seafront and stop at a pub or take a walk in nature it will help clear your head.

Being outside and active has huge benefits, don't stay locked away stuck in those dark thoughts. Get outside, see what the world has to offer and clear your mind.

I hope this helps someone out there.
Don't stay in the dark reach out, get outside and talk to someone.

People are often surprised at the variety of areas of the body that we treat. Here’s a breakdown for the past year…

As Osteopaths we are always surprised how many people think we only treat lower back and neck pain. We have looked back over the last year to see the many other parts of the body we have treated.

Lower Back and Neck are certainly the most common problem areas, making up 70% of our appointments. However, the remaining 30% covers a lot of parts of the body!

Head 16%, Foot/Ankle 14%, Hip 14%, Sacroiliac 11%, Knee 9%, Upper Back 9%, Shoulder 7%, Joint 2%, Mid Back 2%, Hand 2%, Abdomen 2%, Pelvis 2%, Thigh 2%, Headache 5%, Buttock 2%

A reminder about hot floors, which can be inside houses as well as out and the updated treatment to run under cool running water for 20 minutes.

We’re set for the hottest day of the year today, and with the heat comes hot floors!

“I thought I would share our awful experience on sunday with our poor little boy Louie to raise awareness.
There was no way we would ever have thought this could be a result of our kitchen floor! At 22 months old he didn't have the reflexes to hop off the hot tiles. He just stood there and screamed until I could get to him and scoop him up.
I would hate for this to happen to anyone elses baby 😭”

We often worry about hot surfaces outdoors - artificial grass and tiles, but this is a serious reminder from Devon mum Natasha that even indoor flooring can heat up when in direct sunlight!

Natasha shared her story on Facebook and has allowed us to spread the word!

Remember with burns:
🧯 Remove clothing unless stuck to the burn
🔥 Run under cool running water for 20 mins
🧯Cover loosely with cling film
🔥 Get checked at a&e

Efficacy and safety of osteopathic manipulative treatment: an overview of systematic reviews 13/04/2022

Phone use is everywhere now and it is important to remember our posture while using a screen. This is particularly important for children using phones and tablets. If you get neck pain or headaches, it is worth addressing your screen use or visit an osteopath to see if we can help.

The head weighs about 5 kg.
The neck supports the weight of the head, which, depending on the angle of the inclination, increases. The more we look down, the more our head weighs. Depending on the cervical segment taking the weight and stress, the weight of the head fluctuates within 5 kg, but if you lean it forward, it weighs more and more. When it is bent at 60 degrees, it loads 22-27 kg on lower cervical vertebrae and downwards into the thoracics. Indeed the entire spine.
What’s more, the plethora of supporting soft tissues, fascia, muscles, ligaments and tendons get strained and tired, which builds further tension on the joints and discs. If not now, then down the track this will impact the neck as it gets stiffer as well as the likelihood of creating problems elsewhere.
Take care using smartphones. We are fully absorbed by what is going on and we don't check our body position and what this little device can do to us over time.
