Rose & Thistle Markets

A carefully curated community market of local artists, makers, and crafters

03/07/2024

Tonight we want you to welcome a new maker to our little maker community. Joining us for the first time on July 13th is Lulo. Her gorgeous cushions would brighten up even the dullest corner of your home.

"Lulo is myself, Lucy Lomas, based from my home, just outside Kinross. When my children were small, I started to make craft items to sell at local fairs, not just because it was something I could do from home, but also because I have a love for fabrics and sewing. During Lockdown I decided to branch out into cushion making and I have a passion for gorgeous fabrics and matching colours and trims. I love to be able to provide my customers with something handmade and unique. I have also branched out to making lampshades in matching fabrics. All items on my stall are handmade by myself and I pride myself on my meticulous work. I am very much looking forward to meeting everyone at the Rose & Thistle market."

So proud of Nana Kats Apothecary following their Gold award for their Kelpie Facial Toner from The Green Parent Natural Beauty Awards. Come along and try some of their award winning product at the July 13th makers market.

"Our all-natural, vegan and sustainable Skincare potions are carefully hand-crafted in our Apothecary inspired by plant magick and folk herbalism. We are a small family-run business- an artist, a plant lover & a medical herbalist. We are inspired by local landscapes, Scottish folk tales and the desire to live mindfully alongside nature. Many of our products are named after Scottish folk tales.

Our products are free of chemical and synthetic 'nasties' and use plant magick as a foundation for skin-kind skincare. We only use recyclable and/or reusable packaging, ethically sourced ingredients and when possible the use of ‘upcycled’ ingredients- such as Apricot Oil, a byproduct made from the jam and juice industry.

We are passionately against the idea that skincare should ever include the term ‘anti-ageing’, which suggests that ageing is a problem. We proudly promote that no one should ever apologise for ageing and should embrace the wisdom that comes with age and experience, therefore our Skincare is for “Wise & Mature Skin’.

Our sustainability values can be found in our recyclable and/or reusable packaging, ethically sourced ingredients and when possible the use of ‘upcycled’ ingredients- such as Apricot Oil, a byproduct made from the jam and juice industry."

In case you were in any doubt about how intricate Florrie's Paper Flora's work is or how talented she is, check this out. We are really looking forward to seeing the finished product on July 13th at our next makers market in St. Andrew Town Hall.

Work in progress clematis vine. The petals are made from white German doublette crepe paper hand painted with acrylic ink and with magenta Pan Pastel along the central rib. The leaves are German florist crepe coloured with Pan Pastel and a coating of Mod Podge. Paper flowers are very durable but as I’m planning to put my clematis vine on a hoop, I’m adding wire to the petals to make them extra robust ❤️

Time to share the talent that you will find at our July 13th makers market. First up we have the lovely Sophie Bevan.

"Sophie is a Dundee based watercolour artist, specialising in landscapes. She recreates both well-known tourist attractions as well as more abstract and obscure scenery around Scotland, bringing it's gorgeous landscapes into the home with originals, giclee prints, luxury paper goods and more recently her recycled painting jewellery, where she uses any paintings that have gone wrong to create one of a kind jewellery pieces."

We love Nana Kats Apothecary products and the ethos behind this lovely little business. Products that are better for your skin as well as the environment. You will find then at our July 13th makers market at the Town Hall, St. Andrews.

So why do we make 'Natural Skincare'?🌿

🌼Simply, we believe natural skincare can be better for your skin, your well-being, and the environment.

🌼We also believe that if you make the switch to natural skincare you will find the high quality ingredients we use, make real positive changes to your skin's moisture levels, your skin's texture, and your pore size.

🌼Finally, we believe that if you make the switch, you won't go back.

We are excited to introduce you to the talented artists behind these stunning pieces. We look forward to having DaVinci Enterprise Ltd trading with us again on Saturday. Please stop by their stall as you need to see how intricate and detailed their work is in real life.

"We are DaVinci Enterprise Ltd., a team united by inspiration, creativity, and a shared commitment to sustainability. Our open-minded and cohesive approach allows us to create unique products using sustainable wood and natural base oils, reflecting our dedication to nature. Living in beautiful Scotland, we draw much of our inspiration from our stunning surroundings.

Our journey began at Queen Margaret University, where we met at the start of our business degrees. Choosing to collaborate on a community-based project, we established our company a few months later, fuelled by enthusiastic customer feedback.

Today, we proudly work closely with our local community. Since wood is our main material, we give back to nature by dedicating a percentage of our sales to planting trees, reinforcing our commitment to environmental sustainability."

We hope you are all enjoying a sunny Saturday whatever you are up to. Next Saturday remember to come and see us in St. Andrews Town Hall, where you will find 48 artists, makers and bakers including the very talented Martine's Ceramics

‘I am a ceramic artist based in Kirkcaldy, Fife with a little studio in my garden where I create lots of fun creatures from clay. Most of my work is fired outside in a Raku kiln to around 950°C. While they are still glowing hot, they are placed in a bucket with wood shavings. The lid goes on and this is when the magic happens, when wonderful effects are created. The process of Raku makes every ghost, gnome, sheep or mouse completely different. What comes out the kiln is always a surprise. I love it 🧡’

We are renaming the days of the week and making today Treat Yourself Thursday, we've nearly made it to the weekend after all. Suzibluejewellery has just the thing to make you smile and feel a thousand dollars (without having to spend a thousand dollars), make sure to stop by her stall at the June 8th market.

"I am a jeweller who designs and makes every piece to a high standard within my garden studio in fife. I have a degree in jewellery and silversmithing with over 40 yrs worth of experience.
All of my pieces of jewellery are hand made and unique including hand crocheted silver wire necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings. I crochet silver wire to any length you require, the longer the length the more versatile. You can wrap a longer length around twice to achieve a double layer necklace or tie a knot in it at the base for a longer pendant look.
My inspiration starts in a sketchbook, drawing, sketching and playing with shape, pattern and texture, this inspires some experimenting at the bench and the final production of the piece using the best suited materials. I work with silver, gold and platinum, combining them with a range of semi precious stones and freshwater pearls(I’m addicted to them)
I also undertake commission work, redesigning old pieces of jewellery or creating a unique piece to your designs and ideas.
If a piece of jewellery doesn’t fit I am very happy to resize accordingly.
Having taught for 35 years I also offer one to one classes in my garden studio, tailored to your requirements."

We love all of our charities, but this month's charity if especially close to all of our hearts. All of our regulars will know SuzyBloom with her stunning florals and some will have met her lovely Mum. This month Suzy will be raising funds for MND Scotland in her Mum's memory. She will have amazing raffle prizes so please pop along and lend your support.

"At the next Rose & Thistle Market we will be raising money for MND Scotland. Many of you knew my lovely mum who used to thoroughly enjoy coming to the market with me. She loved the ‘vibe’ she loved the stalls, the stallholders. She LOVED this market 🥰 I have some incredible items for our tombola. From never used Radley bags to fabulous bottles of whiskey and some wonderful candles. Photos of the items to follow.
MND is an incredibly cruel disease and was an unbearable diagnosis which my beautiful mum bravely bared. There are no ‘silver linings’ with such a diagnosis but mum found one, she said she was lucky to be diagnosed at 79 and not 49. The support that MND Scotland offer the whole family spurs you on to continue to support them back. I hope you can support us on the 8th of June.
Thanks,
Suzy
