Progress Pics - 4 yrs

This beauty came to us 4 yrs ago struggling with her skin and suffering with the knock on mental effects many with acne suffer. We wish we could tell you that she has had beautifully clear skin ever since, but we are here to educate; not sell unrealistic expectations and dreams.

Acne (true acne) is a chronic disease, one which there is no cure. What we can do for our acne patients is to educate them. Educate on correct care, understanding skin physiology and personal triggers, and above all, support them through their peaks and troughs. Support is one of the most important roles we can give our acne patients and through the past 4 years we have developed an incredibly strong bond and perfected our teamwork. Because there HAVE been ups and downs!

We have focused on a routine designed to support cellular turnover, repair and strengthen the skin barrier, and reduce inflammation. Over the years we have performed chemical peels, 1 course of medication, Dermaplaning and Microneedling - treatments chosen on what her skin required at the time. Our biggest hurdle however is maintaining her confidence; people underestimate the huge impact chronic acne has on many people and the only way to truely help this is to educate, change our attitudes, stop idolising perfection and stop believing in the next “miracle” product!

We are so incredibly proud of this patient, who is beautiful inside and out! Please don’t suffer in silence with your skin, always seek advice from a trusted specialist.

This beauty came to us initially to understand the correct way to care for her skin, help with dehydration and congestion!

We advised that sun damage and incorrect products were the main culprits hindering her healthiest skin. We advised of a targeted, personalised routine, implemented monthly manual exfoliation in the form of Dermaplaning with hydration and oxygen infusion. We also talked through the importance of sun protection, how to do this daily without compromising her enjoyment of the outdoors.

You can see that with the correct care, daily SPF and education, her skin glows with health! Her pigmentation, skin tone, fine lines and congestion are all but gone and we are thrilled that she has committed to her journey!

Most of us are familiar with the terms AHA’s and BHA’s, but have you heard of PHA’s? Polyhydroxy Acids are non-irritating, gentle exfoliators that are ideal for any skin type, including sensitive skin.

PHAs improve skin texture and even skin tone, in a much gentler way than their cousins, thanks to their large molecular size. This hinders their ability to absorb into the layers which create irritation and sensitivity, so those with inflammatory conditions like rosacea or eczema may find PHAs just what they have been looking for! The main PHA’s are gluconolactone, lactobionic acid and galactose, which also have hydrating properties, so by combing it with a barrier cream will work to combat dehydration and fine lines!

The big question is; If they don’t pe*****te to the depths of the dermis, why would you chose a PHA over the more well known AHA/BHA’s? Well, PHAs have antioxidant properties that help undo (and prevent) UV and pollution-induced free radical damage to our collagen and skin cells. Making it not only an excellent solution for sensitive skins, but a multifunctional exfoliant! The other benefit of it being a relatively superficial molecule is that it is completely safe for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

*before introducing a new product, always check with a trusted specialist to see if it right for you and your needs

This beauty originally came to us with severe peri-orbital dermatitis, that nothing seemed to help with and she was in discomfort and frustrated! That was our first point of call - when addressing skin health we always need to address inflammation first, then we are able to address and other issues.

Over the past 7 months, she has been having monthly manual exfoliation, in the form of Dermaplaning along with hydration treatments and oxygen infusion. Her personalised routine was selected with actives targeted to correct her weakened skin barrier, pigmentation and keep her skin hydrated and her tone even. Her skin now glows with health and her confidence has improved drastically!

It is never too late to start your skin journey!

Everybody is always after THE one miracle product; whether for wrinkles, anti-aging, pigmentation, acne and everything in between! Well what if we told you there is one thing that makes every condition or complaint worse - regardless of nationality, skin colour or gender?

It’s the sun. Yes, the miracle product we have all been waiting for is suncream. Whilst it is true, we need the sun to survive, it also exasperates most conditions, breaks down essential collagen, elastin and creates irreversible DNA damage. In fact, UV exposure is responsible for 90% of our skins ageing!

We need to be practicing (and teaching) uv safety from childhood, and understanding that the dangers are present not just in summer or to those with fair skin, but to everyone, everyday! We often covet a tan, thinking that it makes us look healthier and more attractive; however a few weeks of tan actually gives us irreversible damage which we then spend a fortune trying to correct (think expensive moisturisers, treatments and injectables) just to keep repeating the same mistake over and over again!

By enjoying the outdoors (and sun) responsibly; protecting ourselves from those dangerous UV rays (through SPF, hats, sunglasses etc), we will have found the solution we have been searching for all along! So rather than continuing to search for the next “miracle” product, we already have it - Suncream!

Progress pics - RFM

Our Tricia has had 4 RFM treatments over 19 months, she has also been having her regular monthly manual exfoliation in the form of Dermaplaning and recently, a little bit of lip filler - other than that, this is all RFM!

She is thrilled with her changes in jawline, pigmentation and her lines and wrinkles, in particular, her sleep lines! Should you have any questions about the celebrity favourite (RFM) treatment, Tricia loves to answer any questions!

This beauty is a perfect example of how incorrect products and a damaged barrier can cause congestion. By simply providing education, recommending the right actives for individual needs and consistency can transform skin to be healthy and glowing!

Skin is not a one size fits all and when recommending a routine, we need to assess issues, individual triggers, genetics, what the current care is and other extrinsic factors. It is never too late to start your skin journey and have the healthy skin you have been dreaming of!

Melasyl is a new ingredient in the skin science world, a molecule formulated to capture the precursors of melanin to stop pigmentation from forming in the dermis, whilst treating the upper layers.
 ✨
Melanin is the main pigment responsible for the colour of the skin and in pigment disorders it is overproduced or accumulates excessively. When exposed to UV light (which is everyday, regardless of cloud cover), melanin production is activated to protect our skin from damage and cancers and this increase in protection means greater occurrence of pigmentation conditions like melasma, age spots, freckles, hyperpigmentation and post-inflammatory marks.
 ✨
Most current products to target pigmentation attempt to reduce the activity of tyrosinase (the enzyme that catalyses the production of melanin), whereas , Melasyl acts on the excess of melanin, capturing the precursors before they transform into the coloured pigments, preventing localised hyperpigmentation. Thus, allowing melanin synthesis to take place in a natural way, without over production. The objective is to have an exhaustive action on the spot: prevent melanin excess, but also target the entire skin environment in the spot area so that the spot doesn’t appear again, and so get a persistent efficacy.
 ✨
Whilst the new kid on the block, it is showing consistent results and a great ingredient to add to your regime if pigmentation is one of your concerns.

We love seeing a patients commitment to the health of their skin! This beauty is a reformed sun worshipper who has embraced change and now wears daily spf and knows the importance of hydration and quality over quantity!

By making simple changes and using education to her advantage, she looks younger, healthier and she now gets comments on her glow! Know that whilst prevention is better than a cure, it is never too late to start your skin journey!

A new craze in the anti-ageing world and something we are seeing advertised everywhere are Polynucleotide Injections. In fact, Jennifer Aniston’s love of these injections has seen them rise to the top of many people’s wish lists and the benefits are claimed to be significant - from increasing the metabolic activity of skin cells, skin tightening and helping multiple skin conditions. But is it really such a miracle?

Well, these injections are sourced from salmon s***m and this miracle ingredient (Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN)), is an extremely small molecule, enabling it greater pe*******on. So far, studies and clinical trials are limited and results are primarily anecdotal, especially on humans. Researchers into PDRN believe the potential benefits are many (swipe) based on results seen in mice and the few medical trials undertaken have shown no adverse effects. However, it is not approved for use in all countries (though it is in the US & UK) and the full potential side effects aren’t currently known. Those who have had the treatment claim to look fresher, but the results are subtle.

Our opinion is this; whilst we definitely think it is an ingredient to watch, it is expensive for subtle results and until more clinical studies have been done, we would rather advise our patients to stick with proven, more cost effective methods!

Some of the lips we have had the pleasure of creating this past week. They are a perfect example of how all lips require a different approach; from what a patient wants through to injection technique.

Each one of these enhancements were wanted for different reasons. One wanted to restore the volume that had been lost as she aged. Another wanted to correct asymmetrical lips and the other just wanted a little more volume! Whatever the reason may be, we strive to create the most natural final look and to do this, face shape, aesthetic balance and injection technique must all be taken into account.

Taking the leap to have filler can be a daunting one; always discuss your concerns and wants with the practitioner and never go ahead unless you have full confidence and feel completely at ease.

Weirdly, eyebags mean different things to different people and they are unfortunately, notoriously difficult to treat. Some think of the puffiness and noticeable “bumps” that become visible and others mean the dark circles that are associated with tiredness. Now, each of these issues are caused by different things and as such require different possible solutions!

Puffy Eyes are (mainly) caused when the supporting structures around the eyes lose strength and volume, causing the area to weaken and draw attention to the fat pad that is directly underneath the eye. This then looks “bulgy” and fluid retention can exasperate the problem making the area look swollen. Other causes may be underlying medical conditions such as disease, eye conditions or chronic allergies.

Dark circles have many different causes with the number one reason being genetics. Next is loss of volume in the tear trough/cheek area due to collagen depletion and loss of structural integrity. This will cause the blood vessels in this area to become more visible and the skin to be thinner. Sun exposure and uv damage, sleep deprivation, allergies, medication, eye strain, dehydration and smoking are also factors which could be the cause!

Whilst there are certain options to help reduce the visibility of both puffiness or dark circles, there really isn’t a miracle cure. Skin care, dermal filler, cold Compresses, changing lifestyle and surgery are some of the choices available to you, however, it is worth noting that some individuals may not be good candidates for some treatment options. Always discuss your concerns with your trusted skin specialist!

We are constantly astounded that the dangers of UV radiation are so under promoted in the UK, and especially that Sunbeds are still SO popular! Did you know that they have been illegal in Australia since 2015? This is due to the high concentration of UV radiation in each bulb, which not only increases the risk of developing cancer by 67%, but are 6 times stronger than the midday Mediterranean sun & the World Health Organisation classified sunbeds in the most serious category of cancer-causing products.
☀️
The main reasons we hear for the use of sunbeds are; Achieving a healthy tan, increase Vit D levels, to treat certain skin conditions (acne, psoriasis, eczema etc) & to alleviate depression. Now, we’re going to be honest here; between the ages of 18-20 Amber was totally addicted to sunbeds; going 3/4 times a week for 6-10min & being naturally olive skinned, never burned! - then at 21, she developed Skin Cancer. (👉🏼 tanned Amber!).
☀️
More & more countries are making the use of sunbeds illegal & we wholeheartedly support this legislation. The claimed benefits above are completely false & there is a plethora of scientific evidence to prove this. A “base tan” does not exist & you are still at risk of burning. When we develop sunburn, we are actually causing irreversible DNA damage. Most skin conditions (especially inflammatory ones) are aggravated & prolonged by UV exposure. Vitamin D levels can be maintained through diet, minimal sun exposure & supplements (plus safe Phototherapy treatments to alleviate depression).
If you simply MUST have a tan, please use fake tan. There are so many great options out there these days (no orange streaks anymore) but above all; NO TAN IS WORTH DYING FOR!

Progress Pics - 11 Mths

This lovely lad came to us 11 months ago with incredibly painful, cystic acne. We discussed the importance of education, consistent care and the impact on mental health. After 6 months, he had perfected a good skin care routine, was using the correct personalised products and we had gotten his skin working healthily and efficiently; unfortunately he was still getting large cysts and was in significant pain. At this stage we recommend he undertake a course of Lymecycline as a) nobody should be in significant pain and b) we wanted to ensure his mental health wasn’t affected.

Whilst we don’t often recommend anti-acne medication, that doesn’t mean that it hasn’t got its place in skin health and care. When used to expedite healing, balance hormones and stop discomfort and pain; it can be an excellent tool ALONGSIDE correct care. What we are opposed to, is using it as a solution without advising on correct care, skin health and education. Without these things, medication is simply putting a band-aid over the problem without addressing the cause. The other issue is that medication is often considered as many people’s first option, when in fact, many issues don’t require it (especially in teens) - trust us, congestion and acne are not the same thing!

When deciding on using acne medications, you need to take a rounded approach. Ensure that the issue does indeed require medication in the first place, that you use it alongside correct care, and that the pros outweigh the cons (Anti-acne medications tend to have a list of side effects). In this patients case, it was the perfect decision and the next step will be to introduce Microneedling to address his scarring and PIE.

Products? Treatments? We are often led to believe that you get what you pay for. That if something is cheaper, then there must be a reason why, but how true is this in aesthetics and skin care? Well, like most things, there is no black and white answer.

With regards to skin specialists, yes there are different levels of qualifications; from beauticians that provide skin treatments through to Dermatologists and everything in between. Whether price reflects value and expertise, well, you need to a) be looking at what issues you want addressed b) what their ulterior motive is (to genuinely help or to make a profit) and c) whether they explain why they recommend certain treatments/products and the benefits to you! Finally, you need to ensure they have the correct qualifications for the treatments they are providing (this is especially true for high risk procedures like injectables). Always read reviews, look at their previous work and never be afraid to ask questions!

In terms of products, price is not an indication of value and quality. Relating to skin health and care; you need to be looking at the ingredients, molecular structure and formulation. You also need to ensure that the ingredients are tailored to your own personal needs and finally, remember that blanket ranges don’t work. Be skeptical of anybody selling products; they make a significant profit from what they sell to you, and these may not be the best products for your needs. There is a affordable option that works for every budget and expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better.

Lip Enhancement

Another gorgeous and subtle result for this beauty who had been wanting filler for a long time but was scared of looking “done” or “unnatural”. She wanted add a small about of volume whilst keeping the natural shape.

Making the decision to have filler can be a nerve wracking experience, so we like our patients to feel in control of the experience; allowing them to hold mirrors, watching the progress and talking them through the technique and placement of the product. This allows for the experience to be a collaborative one.

Progress Pic - RFM 4 3 Treatments

This beauty has undergone her course of three RFM treatments and her results are impressive; with her fine lines, wrinkles, skin tone and texture undergoing a massive transformation; However, we are blown away by the reduction of her tear trough fat pads and lines!

The reason why this treatment is so innovative is because it utilises the heat from the radiofrequency and the micro-injury from the needles to activate the immune system. The device remodels collagen and adipose (fatty) tissues; utilising the depth of the needles to create a controlled injury to promote elastin cells to regenerate, smoothen, and tighten the elastin fibers of the skin. This works to correct fine lines and wrinkles, loose or sagging skin, rough, uneven skin texture and even stretch marks; plus pigmentation, scarring.

A course of three is recommended is to utilise skin memory. The immune system will recognise any injury that it has healed prior and as such, react quicker, more efficiently and produce better results!

Did you know that hands are one of the first parts of the body to show signs of ageing and yet, many people fail to look after them correctly (if at all!).

It’s not surprising really, considering they are exposed to the elements, we use them almost constantly, they are knocked, cut, burned, scrubbed and much more! But there are also physiological reasons as to why the hands may age quicker. The fat pads on the hands are relatively thin and as we age the loss of volume allows veins to be come more prominent. The hands also have less sebaceous glands and without oil (plus the dryness of soaps and detergents) the skin will lose its softness and suppleness, causing dry wrinkled skin that has a damaged and irritated barrier. Finally, the years of sun exposure will not only create “age/liver spots” but cause our collagen and elastin to break down and become faulty, resulting in thin, crepey skin.

To care for our hands we need to avoid harsh detergents, fragrances and chemicals. Ensure they are hydrated and use a moisturiser regularly but above all, use SPF daily! For more tips, swipe 👉🏼
