Apex Surf Coaching

Our social surfs are a fantastic way of connecting with other surfers and our coaches, getting some informal coaching, advice, tips, shared knowledge etc for all levels of surfer from novice upwards.

We run these once or twice a month, (next one Sun 1st Sept - Porthcawl from 2:30pm ) surf depending, at various beaches in either South Wales or South Coast.

Ideal for folks who want someone to surf with, build confidence, learn a new skill or gain some ocean knowledge, encourage for the nervous or casting a weathered eye over those progressing with some drills or things to try.

Open to anyone, please bring your own equipment or hire locally if you need. We can provide some equipment such as different types of board if you’re looking to try something new or want to progress down to a smaller / longer board.

These sessions are a great way to learn without the cost or time constraints of formal coaching or a taster for those looking for coaching or someone new to surf with.

Lifeguard CPD training for Bristol today, 3B’s - Bones, Bleeds & Burns. If you hold an NVBLQ qualification then it’s a requirement to have 20hrs CPD training during the lifespan of your qualification somas to go straight for reassessment before it expires and evidence the training hours.

We provide structured CPD hours for Lifeguards and surf coaches holding their NVBLQ/NSCLA/OWL/FAW qualifications, if you would like us to deliver some to your surf coaches or guards then please get in touch. We aim to make training fun, informative and in relation to the RLSS syllabus that is held.

The Wave has this in place to ensure their lifeguards and surf coaches are fully trained and refreshed on skills to provide a high level of service should the need arise.

Remote online coaching, a super useful tool for all our surfers.

whilst I was on the beach in Newquay today, was training at The Wave pre .

We fitted in a quick lunchtime online remote session to fix a fault that she noticed in one of her manoeuvres she was trying to dial in last night before her surf this morning. Video analysis showed a small but easily fixed timing and targeting for recovery issue and we established the correct body movement needed, in this case mainly rotating too early by about half a second and adjusting the target for the recovery and completion. Cue words of ‘delay’ ‘push’ ‘look low’ were put in place.

We work remotely with surfers from all over the world, everything from a more in depth 1:1 online review session, goal setting and drills, to quick between session or in surf tune ups for our competitive surfers away from our regular training, who become aware of a fault developing they want to fix quickly before it starts to form an engram (muscle memory).

Para surfing was bidding for Paralympic inclusion into the IPC (international Paralympic committee) accepted it as a sport but LA went in favour of climbing saying surfing was too expensive to hold.

We want the games to know we care about our athletes and sport and want to show them that we are ready to compete!

Doing some great remote coaching with one of our development team.

This session Elin was working on getting more power into her surfing using effective use of arm lift and rotation through her turns in preparation for the Rotterdam wave pool invitational and then Boardmasters Newquay.

Elin is a Netherlands based surfer who we have been working with over the past 3 years. Summer is here at last! Took the grommet to the skatepark today, try his new board out with his little skate buddy William. Needless to say they try to out do each other in the fake wipe out stakes to get the Dads to come pick them up then burst out laughing!

Might have had a few turns on the ramp ourselves, old skaters still got it, we just ain’t as brave 😂!

Another fav from the collection, Phil Jay S-Deck 1972? Shaped in London of all places in Phil’s Wandsworth shop! Londons only surf shop at the time. Love this board! Yet to ride it as it is so clean and those fins are hard to find! Always loved the spray on this board, thanks to Al Lyndsey for passing it on all those years ago. Do red boards go faster? Or do disco spray boards 🕺 have more wiggle?

This is my Holy Grail board, 1975 - AIPA 7’2” shaped for George Downing, one of the first big wave riders, with his Wave Crest Hawaii logo and hand drawn AIPA logo above. Shaped by Ben Aipa, an early ‘Sting’ 🐝 model at the start of his sting concept and design. It’s seen some action in heavy surf by the dings. Super rare and one that won’t leave my collection.

for some reason I love surfing single fins on sundays, something cruisey (is that a word?) about it, the speed, flow, feeling when you hook a top turn, just love it, here is a few from our collection :) anyone else have a certain board for a certain day of the week? Lol

Great team this week on the latest course, good fun and lots of hard work. What would you do if one of your new candidates has this as a tattoo just as they were about to do their timed swim? Lol
(She smashed out a 6min something swim). Ps dont leave your phone unattended with them 😂

Great week so far, Elin and Melissa entered Boardmasters for the first time and although are now out, amassed some great experience to take into the their next comps.

Elin competes this weekend in Netherlands and following weekend In Denmark.

Melissa in the Welsh Para surf champs next weeknin the VI division.
