The Downsman Bowls Club
Outdoor and Short Mat Bowls club, based in Crawley, West Sussex. Everyone is welcome.
Last Saturday (31st) saw the final of the Mid Sussex Bowls League, Champion of Champions competition, with two players from the Downsman Bowls Club competing for the title - first time in the competitions history that this has happened
Success at the Downsman Bowls Club Mid Sussex Bowls League, Champion of Champions Final.
The Dave Berry Breakfast Show on Absolute Radio completed their journey to play bowls yesterday afternoon, and you can hear all about their match, and how he put into practise the advice he was given by one of our own Downsman members, on this morning’s show and on their podcast.
It’s been great hearing bowls, and our Club, get so many mentions on national radio (their Breakfast Show gets 2 million listeners and it’s been trailed through the day too) - let’s hope it encourages a few new people to give bowls a go.
Bowls getting plenty of mentions on Absolute Radio at the moment as the Breakfast Show host, Dave Berry, really wants to play - he’s arranged a match a Bounds Green Bowls and Tennis Club, and has a “Mentor and Guru” from none other than our very own Downsman Bowls Club!!
Great to hear our sport getting some airtime - especially in such an enthusiastic and fun way
Two matches in the Nellie Mercer League and a County Pairs match being played at home in this evening’s glorious sunshine - pop down and watch from one of our sunny benches
This afternoon is our club charity memorial match - if youve got some free time, come down to watch the games and support our members.
Matches start at 13:30, at our club on Ifield Avenue
Don’t forget there’s an informal roll up for new outdoor players, people who want to try bowls, and anyone else that wants a practise, every Saturday morning 10 - 12 and it’s lovely weather for it today 💛☀️
Did you know the “Downsman” referred to in our name is the ancient Sussex chalk figure The Long Man of Wilmington?
The iconic hill figure known as the ‘Guardian of the South Downs’ has been traced back to the 16th or 17th century by archaeologists, and is thought to be a fertility symbol.
Long Man of Wilmington: Chalk carving repainted by volunteers The Sussex Archaeological Society organised the repainting following a fundraising campaign.

Regular physical activity and exercise can make us healthier and happier. When we're active, the body releases feel-good hormones that can improve our mood and boost our energy.
