Last day of Attenborough Arts Centre as a Learning Assistant as I will be going to my MA at CSM, London. Had a fab time and a lot of fun!! And will miss everyone

Happy pride 🌈The painting here, done by 5 year old me, is my favourite piece to date. Whenever I see it, I can smell it: the chalkiness of poster paints and the (almost) two decades old paper. I admire the use of texture and gesture, and how the rainbow colours are somewhat in muted tones (maybe like the way I dress now).

It’s funny, because at the age of 5 I didn’t know what pride or being gay was. In fact, at that age, I thought INVENTED the concept of lesbianism, when I wondered if two girls could get married- I dismissed it as an impossible thing, because two girls getting married? Crazy?

But now I’m very much proud of who I am, and I like to think 5 year old me would be too.

I have been thinking about this a lot recently, amongst other (more global and important) things going on.

Recently it has came to light that Derby (my home city and where I currently live) is deemed as a “dump”. At first I laughed and kinda agreed with it, but after seeing several articles on it, something felt off within me- like the people of Derby, or Derby inherently as a city is destined for doom.

Derby is a diverse place, where people come from all over the world and have often moved here for work (much like my grandparents), as well as people whose families have been here as far as they can trace back.

Many have worked in industries that have built this country, e.g carriages for the tubes in london.

I think a lot of Derby’s letdowns are due to lack of resources and funding (which isn’t the inhabitants fault) Like it’s almost a moral failing of those who are from Derby?

I think a lot of the mockery is routed in classism, and monopolises those who on vulnerable in society, such as addicts, who are seen as a thing that devalues the city and not as human beings?

Nevertheless there are many people and groups that still try to give life to Derby. I think of Dubrek or Down to Earth, as well as other artistic venues like Deda, QUAD and ArtCore.

My point is, only people from and who live in Derby can call it a dump, because it’s OUR dump.

Currently have an exhibition called ‘Is Image Making Akin to the Spiritual or Something like That?’ on !!

Working with the idea of drawing, image making and production, this exhibition is an accumulation of artwork concerned with symbology, existence, belief and memory.
