🚵‍♂️ TOM RIDES 150 MILES IN ONE DAY FROM COAST TO COAST!

If you see Optimum Derby MD Tom Heeley walking a bit funnily over the next few days, don’t be too harsh on him.

He has just completed a feat of gargantuan endurance completing the coast-to-coast route of 150 miles (243km) in one day from east to west.

The route started near Scafell Pike and Lake Windermere in the north-west and ended in Whitby, North Yorkshire.

Tom was wonderfully supported by fellow cyclist, Sam Pyot and wife Emily in the team van along the way and he celebrated a tremendous achievement, at the end of over 10 hours in the saddle, with what everyone does in Whitby…eat fish and chips!

✍️ BLOG: Don't let golfer's elbow ruin your summer

Golfer's elbow often appears in novice golfers or those who don’t play very often and subsequently, don’t hit many balls.

That quick spike-up in load when people play a lot in a short space of time, leads to that inflammation.

It can be similar to Achilles tendon injuries. These can be caused by things like footwear and changes in insoles.

With golf, has your grip changed on your clubs? Could it down to hard mats on a range or even the weight of your clubs may have changed, causing your swing to change.

✍️ TOM'S TIPS - ACHILLES RECOVERY

The early stages of your recovery will be boot-bearing and maybe crutches too - it's that serious.

Your toes will be pointed at first and gradually bring them back to a flat position.

You have to be cautious on your rehab at first but then we will work you through stages such as: calf raises, building strength, hopping and jumping.

You need to set yourself markers and work through those markers. Time isn't necessarily the key factor here. The key factor is 'can you do this next exercise'?

With the Cricket T20 World Cup heading into the semi-finals, two of the fast bowlers who have been spearheading England’s challenge have both shared serious back problems throughout their career.

Mark Wood and Joffra Archer have spent months on the sidelines over the past few seasons recovering from stress fractures of the back.

They are not the only cricketers to suffer with such an injury – at both professional and amateur level.

🤾‍♂️ BLOG: DIAGNOSING AND FIXING A TORN ACHILLES ⛹️

Thankfully, a torn Achilles tendon is not an injury that many of us would have to put up with during an amateur sporting career.

But if you get one… you really know about it!

The Achilles is just at the back of your heel and travels half way up your calf, below your knee. It helps to point your toes and there are two big muscles that feed into your Achilles tendon.

Tendons should not stretch too much because we want the muscles to do that work.

Pushing off at certain angles and with certain force can create more tension than the Achilles can handle and, as a result, the muscles can’t absorb it and the tendon recoils back into the knee.

It's noisy and painful! 😫

✍ BLOG: Diagnosing your shoulder pain and how to fix it

Is your shoulder pain just a ni**le or is it something more serious like a torn rotator cuff?

When you examine the make-up of the shoulder, it’s surprising there are not more muscle injuries in that area of the body.

“You have four rotator cuff muscles,” explains Tom. “They all originate from your shoulder blade/scapula. You have three on the back side that you can feel and one on the underside, between your shoulder blade and your ribs.

“All three on the back wrap around and attach to the outside of your shoulder and arm. When they contract, they turn your arm outwards and the fourth one, when that contracts, it pulls your arm across your body.”

They are all muscles that are well known to those people who enjoy playing sports like: tennis, volleyball, basketball and cricket, among others. You will have done well to play those sports for any length of time without enduring a shoulder injury.

But, as Tom explains, you don’t have to be playing sports to pick up an injury to this part of your body.

✍️ BLOG: IS A CAREER IN SPORTS THERAPY FOR ME?

MD Tom Heeley was a student once.

Now, he’s teaching them at the University of Derby – and has been for the last 18 months.

Tom teaches in the sports rehabilitation module - a second-year module for sports therapy students.

As a former student of sports therapy at the University of Gloucestershire, a lecturer and business owner, Tom knows all about the routes that young people can take if they want to get into a career in sports therapy or physiotherapy.

And there are plenty of them. As Tom explains, it’s important to have an idea of what you want to get into BEFORE making the decision of which study route to enter into.

“There are two or three options: sports therapy, sports rehabilitation and a physiotherapy degree,” said Tom.

“They all last three years, all give you different qualifications and all have plusses and negatives.

“You could also do a sports science degree and then a Masters afterwards in the areas you really want to specialise in like strength and conditioning for example.

“Ask yourself: Do you want to specialise in sport and sports injuries and management or do you want to have a more rounded approach and wider topics like stokes and paediatrics?"
