Artcore Gallery
Contemporary Gallery in the heart of Derby & Visual Arts Practice organisation. Artcore Gallery offers a platform for both established and emerging artists.
Artcore Gallery celebrates contemporary visual arts through a dynamic and diverse programme of events and exhibitions. Showcasing an extensive selection of unique practices by the emerging talent, Artcore Gallery offers an opportunity to invest in an artist.
We are proud to host Civic Lab! Here are some pictures of everyone preparing for the event. Artcore frequently hosts day-long events like these, with the added convenience of our cafe located just downstairs in our cultural hub. It's an excellent venue choice for such gatherings. Throughout the day, participants will discuss the themes for the 2024 Conference, which include:
Securing our future
Driving ambition to bring positive change
Making a positive environmental impact
Supporting health and wellbeing
Investing in culture as a driver for change
The event will be chaired by Dr. Cara Courage.
We are delighted to invite you to the launch of Artcore’s upcoming exhibition, 'See Hear’ on July 12th, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Artcore Gallery, 8 Albert Street, Osnabruck Square, Derby DE1 2DS. The exhibition features multimedia artworks by Derbyshire-based artists Chris Wright and Ashley Morris.
Chris and Ashley recently participated in Artcore’s international residency in Osnabruck, Germany. Over 10 days, they immersed themselves in the art and culture of Osnabruck, Derby’s twin city. Their work explores the connections and shared references between Derby and Osnabruck, highlighting the bonds that unite these two cities.
Dr. Chris Wright is an interdisciplinary artist, researcher, and writer at the intersection of fine art and philosophy. Her work addresses the political, cultural, and societal aspects of borders and transitional spaces using sound, film, installation, and performative drawing to create multi-dimensional experiences with myriad interpretations.
Ashley Morris is a Midlands-based, neurodivergent writer, director, educator and collaborator of visual storytelling that blurs the lines between fiction and non-fiction. His work is influenced by class, poverty, social issues and family, bringing a unique and powerful perspective to the exhibition.
The exhibition is open and free for all to attend. Please RSVP using this Eventbrite link: https://bit.ly/buildingbridgeslaunch

Have you had the chance to visit our gallery and explore the exhibition resulting from our latest international residency, "The Silence of Growing Things"? Discover the thoughtful works of London-based artists Freya Gabie and Arjuna Keshvani-Ham, inspired by colonial-era gardens in India, Derby, and London. Freya's pieces focus on the historic botanical gardens of Lalbagh and Cubbon Park, exploring concepts of resilience and healing, while Arjuna delves into India's colonial history, aiming to uncover the implicit connections between the city's ecology, its industrial complex, and its colonial past.
Running until June 22nd, our gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday (12 pm to 5 pm). If you haven't visited yet, we invite you to come and explore themes of colonialism, British-Indian history, and more.
As part of Artcore's ongoing exhibition, 'The Silence of Growing Things,' Freya Gabie will be hosting a free printmaking workshop on 21st June from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Arboretum Park, Derby for adults and children (families) to attend. There will be FREE LUNCH at 1:00 pm.
The workshop will involve collecting textured material such as leaves from the Arboretum Park and using them to create prints, drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings that inspired Freya's work in the current exhibition.
Derby Arboretum, established in 1840 as Britain's first municipal park, was originally designed as a botanical garden of trees for the education and enjoyment of Derby's working class. This park was a generous gift from industrialist Joseph Strutt and featured many exotic trees brought from around the world, including varieties like the horse chestnut and cotoneaster tree from India.
Unfortunately, the park suffered from heavy industrial pollution, which killed many of its tree species. Despite this, the garden remains open to the public today, with a few of the original trees still standing.
Join Freya for an insightful evening exploring this historical park and learning about the inspirations behind her art.

Historically, Osnabruck in northwest Germany has been a key European trade route. Twinned with Derby, the city is honoured with Osnabruck Square in Derby’s downtown. In 2022, we developed seven fantastic projects for Derby and Osnabruck’s artistic communities. Last year, our partnership with Kunstraum Hase29 led to an exciting collaborative exhibition. This year, we teamed up with Atelier m82 for a residency featuring artists Chris Wright and Ashley Morris, who will present their work at Artcore Gallery from 13th July to 31st August.
The list continues as yesterday, about 25 guests from Osnabruck enjoyed vibrant workshops at our gallery along with delicious food from Artcore Cafe. We are proud about this ongoing partnership and look forward to more creative collaborations.

Freya Gabie, ‘Entangled Anthology,’ watercolour on khadi paper, beeswax, glass installation, dimensions variable, 2024.
A new series of botanical drawings, based on the 19th Century unpublished and uncredited works of Cheluviah Raju, plant renderings created in ‘Company school’ style, a fusion of Mughal miniature painting and Western scientific botanical illustration.
‘An inventory of Raju’s drawings was discovered in the archives of Kew Gardens and used by the artist to create a new series of botanical illustrations: plant portraits of medicinal species found growing in Lalbagh Botanic Garden, The South London Botanical Institute (founded by Allan Octavian Hume, a botanist who worked in British India) and varieties, introduced from across the world, now found in English municipal parks. Many of the botanists working for the East India Company were medical doctors, tasked with identifying and categorising plants to be used for predominantly marketable and medicinal purposes. Much was learned from indigenous medicinal practices, and this exchange led to the rapid expansion of the exploitative industry of economic botany.
The new botanical is partially obscured and interrupted by a layering of beeswax, a substance that has been used for centuries as a protective coating in the transportation of botanical produce.’ - Freya Gabie
