The official name is otitis externa, and usually develops in ears when exposed to moisture. People who get it often have been diving or swimming a lot, which can bring the germs directly into the ear canal. Swimmer's ear often happens during the summer months when lots of us are enjoying water activities.

Sign of swimmer’s ear include itchiness inside the ear and pain that intensifies if you pull on your outer ear. You may also feel like your ear is plugged up, not be able to hear as well, experience fever, or feel liquid draining from your ear.

You’ll need a doctor to determine whether the infection is fungal or bacterial, then prescribe anti-fungal or antibiotic drops to clear up the issue.

Great news for those chocoholics out there - Chocolate could protect the middle-aged from hearing loss, say doctors in South Korea. They found the rate of hearing loss among people aged from 40 to 64 was much lower in those who ate chocolate than those that didn't.

A study reports that chemicals called polyphenols found in cocoa have strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may protect against hearing damage.

They studied 3,575 middle-aged men and women, giving them hearing tests before they were interviewed about their chocolate consumption, and found the rate of hearing loss was ‘significantly’ lower in those who ate chocolate, at 26.8%, compared to those who did not, at 36%.

Due to an increase in pollen levels, hayfever tends to get much worse in summer, and can actually cause hearing problems. For those who are allergic, the immune system reacts by producing antibodies.

Those antibodies release a substance called histamine, which leads to increased mucus production. Unfortunately allergies also cause swelling of the Eustachian tubes, meaning they don’t open as they should. This causes the Eustachian tubes to become blocked due to muscle contraction which causes middle ear pressure, and in turn hearing loss.
This type of hearing loss is short-term and usually resolves itself once the pollen count dips, however, you're experiencing any changes in your hearing, it's important to seek professional advice.
