I remember this event well. A well-known yogi with a long history of back problems lay on the floor, The Buttafly under his butt and said, “Have you ever wondered why of all the ideas floating out there in the universe like little fishes, you were the one who landed it?”

You could have knocked me down with a feather… Earlier that week, I’d had a vision of me on a fishing boat, leaning against the rail, rod in hand and struggling to reel in the biggest fish you’ve ever seen.

Eight years on, having cured my own chronic symptoms that resulted from a fractured sacrum, I remain committed to sharing the extraordinary benefits of the Buttafly Technique for spinal health and the relief of .

It’s challenged much of my understanding from a physio perspective and continues to inform insight into the wisdom in the body. We truly are walking miracles!

Greg Leach, a retired American physician and a dedicated yoga student for the last 20 years, shares his experience of the Buttafly Technique and explains why he never leaves home without it.

I have fabulous news: My pioneering work in relieving has been recognised, and I've won an award. Details will be published once the official press release goes out... Meanwhile, I figured it was time to update my professional photograph - the last one was taken nine years ago.

This is the nicest of the bunch. I like it because when I've sat at my desk too long or have been concentrating too hard, I look and feel all scrunched up, wound up, and uptight!

It's nice to know I can look and feel relaxed, too!

😁 I’m very excited!

I’ve been accepted as a therapist at Womad this year, offering the Buttafly Technique—not acupuncture, massage, or physiotherapy, but my very own special combination of practices centred around the Buttafly Technique that facilitates a natural and curative release of the spine for spinal and holistic health.

World music has been a passion of mine since I was little. My parents lived in the Bahamas and regularly played an old album from the Eloise Trio: Yellow Bird, tra la laa. I can hear it now!

Live music of any description always gets my toes tapping. I love being introduced to new genres and instruments and being immersed in stories from other cultures.

This Rio de Janeiro collective takes all-comers on a history lesson, delving deep into their country’s rich music heritage but with a contemporary, avant-garde edge.

After fracturing the base of my spine in 2005, I thought my running days were over.

Yoga nestled into my life and nursed me through the indescribable symptoms of a traumatised sacrum and the emotional pain of miscarriage.

Over time, I got back to moving again and eventually, my flexibility improved beyond what it was before. and cycling were a breeze but still, no running.

All remaining symptoms resolved in 2015 (yes, nearly ten years later) when I discovered The Buttafly Technique, but I still felt running was out for me.

Then came the first lockdown, with that glorious spring sunshine. I asked myself, how would it be to try a little experiment: to realign my spine every day using the Buttafly and to try a few steps of a gentle jog? My old running shoes were long gone, so I invested in my first pair of shoes... And began to bounce again.

By late summer, I was ready to try , and have to say, I was probably the fittest in the room for my age!

By my 60th birthday, I was back to running my favourite distance, 5 miles or so. I had no back pain, pelvic floor issues, or anything else - just the joy of freedom in my body!

The Effort of Thriving

It amazes me that anyone can thrive in these times without the support of some kind of mind-body-spirit practice.

But are they really? I entertain this question alongside my experience that everyone I treat with the Buttafly Technique demonstrates a realignment of their spine as a result.

Why do they? Let’s consider the facts:

➡️ The Buttafly Technique applies no pushing or pulling;
➡️ During the Technique, only the slightest inversion is set up;
➡️ The Buttafly acts as a stillpoint inducer and brings about a realignment of the spine, which is organized by the wisdom in the body. At the same time, a gentle flushing of the craniosacral system is achieved.

I think it’s fair to say that if the spine was happy where it was, it wouldn’t realign itself. The body is economical in its habits and does not waste energy making unnecessary changes.

“Living from the mind, mind over matter, man up, pull yourself up by the bootstraps” – these metaphors suggest something pulling us up from the top rather than us growing up from our roots.

We want to establish the foundations and then aim for fluidity throughout our joints, especially the spine, so that we can be wholly available physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Seeing the benefits of the Buttafly Technique for my clients and getting similar feedback from other practitioners has inspired my next step: to build my first “evergreen” course guiding people through the process at home. It will be particularly suitable for those who are struggling with chronic back pain or recurrent pelvic pain and are fed up with having to take painkillers and spend time and money on treatments that do not give lasting results.

🧡 Are we looking at the breath of life here?

This awesome image above has been kindly provided by researcher Veda Austin.

For the last ten years, Veda has dedicated herself to observing and photographing the life of water, particularly in its ‘state of creation’, the space between liquid and ice.

What she calls ‘crystallographic’ demonstrate through imagery that water has an of and also of thought and intention.

This breathtaking example is the result of a pregnant lady holding a small petri dish of water over her belly while meditating on the growing inside her. Are we looking at the early formation of the spine or the fluid, do you think?

Either way, this image encapsulates all that I mean when referring to the wisdom in the body, and I’m excited to have it as the banner image on the new RESOURCES page on my website.

is not simply about how we look from the outside.

What’s happening on the inside is equally if not more important.

Many people remember their parents telling them to “stand up straight” during their teenage years. Why, at that time of life in particular?

Is it because we are getting taller and having more physical presence in the world? Or because that’s an age when our posture is a more obvious representation of the conflicting emotions - wanting to be seen and yet not seen; wanting to assert our individuality yet fit in with the crowd.

Even with understanding, we can’t short-cut the emotional journey through life, and we can’t magic away the conflicts at any age. But we can take on board that the physical body is inextricably linked to the pysche, and take comfort in knowing that, when we work with the physical body, we automatically influence how we feel inside.

The Buttafly Technique promotes a natural way of releasing stress and strain from the spine, improves posture from the inside, and promotes a lightness of being, an overall feeling of health and well-being.

In the tricky time between Christmas and New Year, I got around to going through a pile of old notebooks. It's a job that's been waiting in the wings for a rainy day and, let's face it, we've had plenty of those!

The oldest one dates back to 2001, and inside, on the first page are probably my earliest notes about thoracolumbar fascia and its role in the stability of the spine.

There also reference to the applied anatomy of the diaphragm; how it may be affected by inflammation of the gall bladder; how tension in the diaphragm may alter the dynamics of the phrenic nerve; the relationship between the diaphragm and the subclavius muscle etc.

Reading through, I'm taken on a whistle-stop tour through the last two decades or so during which my understanding of how the body works has spiralled in to focus on the minutiae and then out again to view the broader perspective.

Having an understanding of anatomy and differential diagnosis expedites the process of ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS in my role as a Health Coach, and often saves us going in the wrong direction.

However, it’s actually more important to understand my client’s experience of their symptoms in the context of their whole life – in a holistic sense. The timing of them and other associated patterns, what else is going on in their life, the specifics of what they can and can’t do, their recurring thoughts and emotions.

Science is becoming ever more clear about how a thought creates a chemical reaction in the brain and how this triggers a cascade of events through our body.

Rather than getting bogged down in anatomical detail – which anyway doesn’t tell us WHY there remains a focal point of swelling in the ankle long after the original sprain – getting clear about the details of the big picture for the client is a more effective way of treating the root cause. And often, far less painful.

Wishing everyone, everywhere all good wishes for 2024!

Only when the bus stopped at Hyde Park corner instead of going on to Piccadilly did I remember it was the New Year's Day Parade!

What a surprise as I continued on foot to suddenly find myself being swept along in a sea of splendour.

While it's been a challenging year for many, there was plenty of friendliness and good cheer as people took their place lining the streets.

Children gazed on in wonder as musicians warmed up, drummers drumming, pipers piping, and artists of all descriptions prepared their finishing touches - their faces a picture of joy.

May 2024 be full of Love and happy surprises, a year in which we unite in our commitment to Peace and Freedom for all.
