A recent survey carried out by WaterAid UK on the menstrual cycle and workplace found that 85% of 2,000 women surveyed experienced stress or anxiety managing their periods at work with 43% fearing leakage, 42% experiencing pain and 40% experiencing a heavy flow.
According to the Office National Statistics (ONS) women make up 51% of the population yet we are still having the same old conversation, hiding our periods, using other excuses for absence, inappropriate comments from other people around moods and hormones, and generally struggling in silence.
Forth with life (Aug 2022) survey found 55% of the women they surveyed said their menstrual symptoms affected their ability to work with 15% saying they had taken 2 days off and 20% had taken three days off with period related symptoms.
That same survey found that 60% had attended disciplinary hearings and 51% had lost their jobs due to their periods affecting their work.
And this is before we hit the peri-menopause and menopause – there’s a whole host of shocking statistics on this subject - but that’s another post.
Acupuncture can alleviate distressing symptoms many women experience during their periods, peri-menopause and menopause. There is help available.
I am running a Period Power Clinic every Saturday morning Parkstone Chiropractic from 8am – 1pm. Get in touch. Don’t let your flow stop your glow! Call me on 07990 925407 or email [email protected] to find out more or to book an appointment.

Jason gave a talk about breathwork and the importance of functional breathing to the Durley Sea Swims group as part of their swim camp week on Tuesday πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈπŸŠβ€β™€οΈ

Breathwork work helps the swimmers with their postures, better oxygen deliverability and improved blood circulation, decreases the chance of injury, and helps their focus and concentration levels ✳️

The Durley Sea Swims is an open water swimming group based at Durley Chine, Bournemouth 🍦

Its main focus is on channel swim training support and advice πŸ˜ƒ
They swim every weekend (weather permitting) from May to September 🌞

If you think breathwork could help you, then just DM πŸ‘

If you would like to know more about Oxygen Advantage and Functional Breathing training please message for details.
We can offer courses or one to one sessions.

We already know that dysfunctional breathing includes:
- Mouth breathing
- Fast, upper chest breathing
- Irregular breathing, and
- Feeling like you can't take a satisfying breath.

Now, let's look at functional breathing. What exactly is it, and how will you start doing it?

Healthy breathing has 3 simple dimensions that enhance sleep and help your brain work better:
1. Breathe Light: To improve blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain
2. Breathe Slow: To achieve a balanced state of mind - calm but alert, and
3. Breathe Deep: To increase attention.

To optimize these dimensions of healthy breathing, you must breathe through your nose.

Slow and deep breathing improves heart rate variability (HRV) and can help you make better decisions in business, according to studies from Belgian researchers.

Slow and deep breathing can increase vagal nerve activity and, in doing so, increase heart rate variability. The research was carried out on the effects of breathing patterns on HRV (Study 1) and on decision-making in business under stress (Study 2).

In Study 1, a group of 30 healthy adults used either a symmetric breathing pattern (equal ratio of inhaling/exhaling) or a skewed pattern (exhalation longer than inhalation) or watched an emotionally neutral film. Those using the breathing patterns showed visible improvement, while those viewing the neutral video had no change.
β€œBoth types of breathing patterns significantly increased time and frequency domain HRV parameters, while viewing the film did not,” read the study.

For Study 2, a randomised test group of 56 business students carried out skewed breathing patterns for two minutes before completing a 30-minute, multiple-choice, business decision-making task. The control group simply waited for two minutes before starting the same job.
β€œStress levels were self-reported before and after the task. While controls reported elevated stress levels, those in the experimental group did not. Importantly, participants in the experimental group provided a significantly higher percentage of correct answers than controls,” according to the study.

My Soft Tissue Therapy and Massage treatments are as Covid safe as possible.

Working in the healthcare sector I follow the Government’s Covid health and safety guidelines diligently because this is now an integral part of my job. You can be reassured that it is as safe as it can be because I work in a carefully controlled environment and take all the necessary precautions.

I do a LFT daily and will stop working if I test positive or am told to isolate by Test & Trace.

I sanitise all surface areas and allow time to ventilate the treatment room between clients.

I wear a face covering at all times in the treatment environment and require my clients to do the same.

Keeping you healthy and happy πŸ‘
