This week has brought some truly autumnal weather.

We usually update you when we can, however, there has been very limited change to our protocols in dentistry and we continue to be under the same restrictions as November 2020. Whilst routine care has started back, the pent up demand created by the Covid-19 pandemic unfortunately has meant check ups are delayed.
We have been delighted to welcome some of you back for routine care and we will keep on working through the backlog whilst keeping you all safe.
Our reception team is working hard to contact those patients who were cancelled earliest in the pandemic.
We have safely completed over 3000 dental appointments for our patients since June 2021, most of this has been emergency care or treatment outstanding from March 2020.
The restrictions are still limiting the amount of patients we can see and the way we carry out our treatment. Our aim has always been to keep our staff and patients as safe as possible.
If you have any changes in your mouth that you are worried about please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Our phone lines are open:
Monday - Friday 9am-1pm & 2pm-5pm. Outwith these hours please contact NHS 24 on 111.
Emergency appointments are allocated from 9am on the day of appointment.
The practice is closed for a local Bank Holiday on Monday 11th October, there will be a recorded message on the answerphone for patients requiring emergency care.
We once again thank you all the for the support we have received and your patience. We would also like wish Dr. Louise Campbell, our dentist, our best wishes as her long awaited wedding is taking place in late October.
We look forward to the day where our restrictions are lifted and things become a little more normal. We will continue to keep you informed of any changes,
Please all of you keep safe and well,
Broughty Ferry Dental Care 🦷💙

The COVID-19 vaccination programme is continuing at pace with almost 60% of the adult population in Tayside now had a jab.

This week’s numbers:

Around 240,000 vaccines have been delivered in Tayside – 205,000 first doses and 35,000 second doses. This means that almost 60% of the adult population has had their first jab and 10% has had both doses of the vaccine.

91% of those in priority groups 1 to 8 have had a vaccination. Appointments for cohort 9 are underway and should be complete in the next week.

Second doses update:

• More than 16,200 frontline and patient-facing health and social care staff (57%) have been given two jabs.
• The vaccination teams have visited all care homes to offer staff and residents their second dose.
• If you had your first dose at a community vaccination centre you will receive a letter with your appointment details for your second jab over the coming weeks. Please do not contact the enquiries line to ask about dates as the teams are busy booking and issuing appointments.
• Members of the public who had their first dose at Kings Cross will be given an appointment for their second dose at the Caird Hall.

Next phase of programme:

• Invites for the under-50s will begin to be issued in the coming weeks with the aim of offering vaccination to everyone in these groups by July.
• This will done by age groups 40-49, 30-39 and 18-29.
• Letters will be sent to the address you have registered with your GP practice so it’s really important that your surgery has the correct details for you.
• If you’ve recently moved, or think your details may be out of date with your surgery, please get in touch to update your address.

Rescheduling appointments:

• If you are unable to attend your appointment, please reschedule for a more suitable date and time. This will ensure that appointments are not wasted and can be offered to other people. There is information in your letter for how to change your appointment through the national booking system.

Missed appointments:

• If you think you should have been offered an appointment and have not received one yet – e.g. if you are in priority groups 1-9 – you can complete the missed appointments form at https://invitations.vacs.nhs.scot/

Unpaid carers:

• People aged between 16 and 64 who provide face-to-face care for a family member or friend can register for a vaccination appointment using the national online system at www.nhsinform.scot/covid-19-vaccine

Dr Daniel Chandler, Associate Director of Public Health with NHS Tayside, said, “NHS Tayside’s vaccination programme is making steady progress with almost 60% of adults now having had their first dose. It is really encouraging to see such high uptake among the first priority groups.

“The next few weeks will see us delivering significant numbers of second doses, whilst also completing the first phase of the programme and beginning to offer vaccinations to the under-50s.

”The vaccination teams are working really hard to co-ordinate all this and we would encourage the public to help them by making sure their address is up-to-date with their GP, waiting for their appointment letters and using the missed appointments form where appropriate.

“Vaccination gives us greater protection against COVID-19 and we would encourage everyone to get the vaccine when offered.”

Moving into Springtime

Dear Broughty Ferry Dental Care Patients,

We hope that this reaches you and your families safe and well.

Optimism is in the air at Broughty Ferry Dental Care with the huge success of NHS Tayside in rolling out the vaccination programme. We have been privileged that several of our team have been able to support this programme by delivering vaccinations for the over 80 housebound patients and in the NHS Tayside clinics including the Caird Hall. It has been lovely to be able to give you several of you your vaccines in these settings, and fantastic to see some of our patients who have been well missed.

The roadmap out of lockdown is further good news that we are beginning to see some light at the end of the tunnel. The approach by Scottish Government is cautious and we hope this gives us the outcome all of us are now hoping for.

In terms of dentistry and resumption of normal services, we are open for 9-5 Monday to Friday for emergency and urgent treatment. Despite the news that restrictions are likely to be lifted for other face to face industries such as beauty care on April 26th, Dentistry continues to be heavily restricted for the safety of patients and staff. Unfortunately we are not allowed to operate at our pre COVID levels.

We continue to see a high demand for the number of available appointments, and appreciate as ever your patience. The enforced spreading out of appointments due to factors such as aerosol generation by the dental instruments, social distancing and supply of PPE mean that we are not allowed to return to the high volume of patients as yet. A simple procedure which used to take less 15 minutes before COVID now can take 1.5hrs of surgery time.

We hope the restrictions on dentistry begin to be lifted once the success of the vaccination programme has been realised but realistically we are probably looking at later in the year before the practice looks anything like normal, which as you know is frustrating for us all, as we would love to return to normal.

If you are having problems with your teeth, or notice any changes in your mouth, there are a number of emergency appointments available on the day with one of our dentists. We currently have a huge backlog for routine treatment which we are beginning to complete but the restrictions are not making this an easy task.

Routine check ups have not commenced but we reiterate anyone with pain or anyone who has experienced any changes to their mouth will be prioritised and will be given an appointment.

Our patients health and safety is our number one priority, stick with it Tayside, it looks like better times are coming,

With all of our love,

BFDC

*CLOSED DUE TO ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS* For patient and staff safety we are having to close today. If you have an appointment today we will contact you this morning to cancel and reschedule.

If you have a severe dental emergency please phone the practice on 01382 477562 and a dentist will be dispatched on skis

Stay cosy and safe , enjoy the snow.

04/02/2021

So far, 96% of people in Tayside who are aged 80 and over have had a COVID-19 vaccination.

We’re trying to reach everyone, but we’ve not been able to contact a very small number of patients.

If you are aged 80 or over and haven’t been contacted yet, or you know someone over 80, please call your GP practice to arrange an appointment.

Our GPs have asked that it’s only patients in the over-80s groups who get in touch about vaccinations just now.

This will really help them make sure those most vulnerable get their jab.

For more information who will be called for vaccination in the coming weeks and months go to www.nhstayside.scot.nhs.uk or https://www.facebook.com/NHSTayside/posts/3968523736532742

04/01/2021

Happy New Year to all of our lovely patients.

Following the First Minister's announcement this afternoon, we want to reassure you that we will be open from tomorrow, Tuesday 5th January, as planned, to carry out all essential dental treatments.

We continue to use enhanced PPE and maintain social distancing throughout the Practice keeping everyone safe.

Please be reminded that our front door remains locked and admittance is by appointment only.

Face coverings should be worn when attending.

If you have any concerns about your mouth or have experienced any changes to your teeth please don’t hesitate to call 01382 477562 for an appointment.

As always we wish to thank you for your ongoing support. And we hope that you did all stay away from the Christmas toffees but if you didn’t you know where we are. 🦷 💙

24/12/2020

Wishing a very merry Christmas to all of our patients 🎄 With no Christmas night out this year a hot chocolate and roasted marshmallow in our back garden was a festive alternative. Stay safe throughout the festive period, and stay away from the toffees! Love from the BFDC team ❤️

**LEVEL 3 UPDATE**
Travel to and from appointments

‪From Monday the 2nd November Dundee (including Broughty Ferry) will be in level 3 of the Scottish COVID protection levels. Many of our patients come from Angus, Fife and further afield where the COVID protection level is lower. We want to reassure that you can continue to attend to your medical and dental appointments regardless of where you live as travel related to a healthcare appointment is exempt from any travel restrictions. ‬

Travel is restricted for Level 3 areas as follows - taken from the current information on the Scottish Government web site.

* no non-essential travel into or out of the level 3 area
* exemptions for essential travel for work, education, shopping, HEALTH; outdoor exercise; weddings and funerals; shared parenting, and transit through restricted areas

Remobilisation of NHS Services

All Scottish Dental Practices will continue to operate and ‪from tomorrow‬, we will be able to offer a wider range of treatments on the NHS. We can now provide a full range of urgent and non urgent care - we operate under our own specific guidance and are not affected by the Level 3 restrictions. Health and social care services are continuing to remobilise as the harm from not having access to healthcare has to be set against the harm from COVID.

However, we are still severely restricted in the number of patients that we are allowed to see due to continuing COVID-19 safety measures that need to be taken in practice . We follow strict safety protocols to keep you all safe and this is why we are allowed to continue to work regardless of what COVID protection level we are placed in . The number of appointments will be reduced and it will be necessary for us to prioritise appointments for patients who require urgent dental care, those at greatest risk and those who could not be seen during the lockdown period. Please continue your support as we try to see as many patients as possible but unfortunately this is still not ‘our business as usual’. We will send regular updates and be in contact as to when we can start to see more patients, but we assure you we are trying to see as many patients as possible whilst keeping you and our staff safe. If you experience any changes to your mouth please do call and book an appointment. We aim to get through the back log of patients with outstanding treatment as quickly as we can before restarting all routine check ups.

Future changes

In last nights delayed press conference the PM has placed England into full lockdown in an effort to avoid the forecasted hospital capacity shortages which will occur if the 'r rate' cannot be brought back below the necessary level. With the ink still drying on Scotland's strategic framework document it will be interesting to see how/if our National plans will be amended in the days and weeks ahead. It is hoped that we can avoid any National lockdowns with the tiered approach being sufficient. Time will tell whether the requirement to enforce similar measures in Scotland will emerge. It is likely that now our practice has the necessary PPE and procedures in place that we will avoid complete closure which we saw in March.

Please stay safe, protect others, save lives.
You should:
* wear a face covering
* avoid crowded places
* clean hands and surfaces regularly
* stay 2m away from other people
* self-isolate and book a test if you have COVID-19 symptoms (new continuous cough, fever or loss of, or change in, sense of smell or taste)

Thank you all for your continued support it really does mean to world to everyone Broughty Ferry Dental Care 🦷 💙

Hello September 💙🦷🌈
Autumn is creeping up on us and hopefully the change in seasons will also bring further positive changes for us and how we can get back to treating our lovely patients safely.

Here we are modelling our new PPE which we have been wearing for our emergency aerosol procedures - you can see why we are looking forward to the autumnal weather!

The rainbow 🌈 after the storm this morning

12/08/2020

We are happy to let you know the fault on the telephone lines has been fixed

11/08/2020

Since reopening in June we have been overwhelmed with the support from our patients. This continues to be a trying time and it really has made all the difference having this support from our much loved patients.

As we move further through phase 3, the First Minister has announced that from 17th of August, dental practices will be allowed to carry out emergency procedures which require a drill, in their own practices. This means this type of urgent care will be transferred back to dental practices from the hubs . However, unfortunately for now, the restrictions do not allow for routine treatments such as crowns, fillings etc to be completed.

This small change signals a step towards the remobilisation of routine dental care but does demonstrate the cautious approach the Scottish Government is taking.

For now, the footfall within the practice must remain low to protect our patients and staff. This has an impact on the number of patients we can see in a day, our priority has always been keeping our BFDC family safe and to protect those around us.

We hope you are all keeping well, staying safe and we hope to update you when we have more information to share.

We will be in contact with those patients who have outstanding treatment as soon as we can resume this type of care.

Thank you again for your continued support it really does mean the world to everyone at BFDC 🦷 💙

*PHASE 3 ANNOUNCEMENT*

Despite the First Ministers announcement regarding the resumption of routine non-AGP care on 13th July, regrettably we are still unable to book routine check-ups. A full dental check up requires use of our 3in1 air and water system which is classed as an AGP. Without this device we are unable to fully examine teeth. If you are concerned about any soft tissue changes in your mouth we are able to examine those. If you do have concerns please telephone the practice for an appointment.

We are also still restricted by the number of patients we can see per day, and emergency appointments have to be made a priority at this time. If you have a dental emergency please don’t hesitate to call.

As ever, we appreciate your patience throughout this time as we await further guidance.

We look forward to being able to see you soon, we really miss tending to your smiles.

BFDC 🦷💙

23/06/2020

It has been a very busy start to our first week back in the Practice! It is going to take time to get back to normal. Our team are working really hard to see our list of emergency patients first but for now all Practices in Scotland are only allowed to see 10 patients per day.

There are lots of new procedures and protocols in place for everyone’s safety, including additional PPE for the team. Here are our Dentist Ellie and Dental Nurse Heather modelling our new PPE - still smiling!

Thank you for all of your kind words, support and understanding over the past 12 weeks, it has been a very difficult and frustrating time for a lot of you and for us not being able to help in our usual way.

If you do have an emergency, please call the practice 🦷🌈

18/06/2020

To all our patients,

Following today’s update from the Scottish Government and the move into Phase 2, we have been advised that we can open as of Monday 22nd June.
However, this will be on a phased basis following the guidance from the Scottish Government and Chief Dental Officer, so we wanted to give more information about what to expect when we re-open.

Initially, we will only be allowed to see emergency patients and will only be allowed to provide very limited treatment. This will be the same for every practice in Scotland. We will still be answering our phone and emergency mobile for urgent advice. Please be aware we are unable to carry out routine treatment in this initial phase of opening. We are still able to refer you to the centralised hubs if needed. We will begin contacting patients who have had appointments cancelled to rearrange these once the guidance permits.

Infection control has and always will be paramount in a dental practice. And we have been working very hard behind the scenes preparing for re-opening.

There will be some changes that we want to make you aware of, to ensure your safety and the safety of our staff. These include:

• Our doors will be locked, only pre-booked patients will be allowed to enter the practice
• When you call, we will advise and triage you relating to your dental problem.
• If you do need an appointment we will update your medical history and COVID history over the phone
• We will ask you, if possible to remain outside or in your car until we can take you into the practice
•A member of staff will come and collect you from your car/outside to ensure social distancing
• Please come alone, unless the appointment is for a child or a patient requiring assistance
• Please bring a minimal amount of personal belongings with you if possible
• We are only allowed to operate one surgery with one small team, so you may not see your regular dentist. We may also need a little extra patience during this time as we adjust to this new way of working with reduced numbers.
• We ask you to observe social distancing rules where possible, and we have alcohol hand sanitisers in our waiting room/ reception for you to use
• The whole team will be wearing PPE including face masks, visors & aprons

Finally, we look forward to seeing you again soon and will do our best to make your experience with us as easy and safe as possible. Although we may look a little different for a while with our extra PPE, we will still be smiling under our masks and look forward to getting our Broughty Ferry Dental Care family back to normal!

Thank you 🌈💙

09/06/2020

PRACTICE UPDATE

Following new guidance from the Chief Dental Officer for Scotland, it is still looking hopeful that we will be able to open our doors to emergency patients in the next few weeks, however a precise date is yet to be confirmed by the Scottish Government.

Please be assured that we are working hard behind the scenes to ensure that we are ready for re-opening and moving into this next phase of the “new normal.” We will continue to keep all patients up to date via email and social media and will begin contacting patients with urgent care needs as soon as we are able to.

In the meantime, any dental problems or concerns can be dealt with by our dentists remotely or by referral, by calling 01382 477562, Monday - Friday between 9am-6pm. Out with these times please contact NHS 24 on 111.

We look forward to seeing you all again soon 🌈

03/06/2020

COVID 19 UPDATE

Following recent updates from the Scottish Government we can now say that we HOPE to be opening for emergency patients in a few weeks time. This will be the first phase in moving emergency treatment back from the local hubs to our own surgery. Routine dentistry will resume at a later date but restrictions are still in force. We will keep all patients updated and will advise as soon as we are able to start making appointments again.

In the meantime, if you need advice or have dental questions for us there will still always be someone available over the phone - Monday to Friday, 9am - 6pm. We are all looking forward to opening back up and hope to see you all again soon!
