👷Calling all former coal miners and residents of local mining villages 🏠

We're inviting you to participate in a one-on-one interview with a Durham University researcher for their project on Geothermal Energy from Mines and Solar Geothermal Heat (GEMS). This study aims to understand how households in the North East of England choose their heating systems.

The GEMS project is investigating the potential of using water from abandoned, flooded mines as a low-carbon, geothermal heat source for UK homes. This innovative energy solution could help reduce CO2 emissions and create new jobs in our region. The project is funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

🕒 The interview will only take 15-30 minutes of your time.

📩If you'd like to participate please contact Laura at [email protected]

Upcoming Seminar:

Energy Transitions in Latin America: The Tough Route to Sustainable Development Book Launch delivered by Lira Lazaro of University of São Paulo and Esteban Serrani from the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research

23 April 2024 1-2pm

Latin America has significant potential for renewable energy generation due to its abundant natural resources, including hydroelectric, biomass, solar, and wind power, as well as minerals essential for developing clean energy technologies, such as lithium. However, the energy transition in some countries in the region has been slow due to several factors, including political instability, economic challenges, and regulatory barriers. In addition, more political will is often needed to support renewable energy, as some governments prioritize traditional energy sources over renewable energy.

As the world transitions to renewable energy, examining whether this transition will lead to a more equitable and just society in Latin America is critical. It is important to consider how the benefits of the energy transition will be distributed so that vulnerable communities are not left behind. Will higher-income groups change their consumption patterns to adopt sustainable practices, or will growth benefit only a few privileged groups?

Durham University's Durham Energy Institute (DEI) and renewable energy leader Ørsted have renewed their partnership to help deliver net zero emissions by 2050.

As part of the new five-year agreement, Ørsted will fund the Durham University Chair of Green Energy Systems, which will be held by Professor Simone Abram - the first social scientist to lead the DEI.

Professor Abram's research focuses on the social aspects of the energy transition, including public engagement and community-business interactions. This marks a shift from the partnership's previous technical focus on offshore wind.

DEI and Ørsted see innovation and a holistic approach to sustainability as central to their work together. The renewed agreement will also continue Ørsted's support for MSc scholarships, PhDs, and visionary research at the DEI.

Professor Abram said the partnership provides "exciting opportunities for pioneering, interdisciplinary research" towards a clean and just energy transition.

Ørsted's David Bould added that "social sustainability is crucial" as they collaborate with communities on the energy transition journey.

This builds on the long-standing, successful collaboration between DEI and Ørsted.

What an incredible week for the Durham Energy Institute (DEI) team! 🌍☀️ Last week, we had the honour of showcasing our world-leading research on accelerating inclusive energy transitions through an exhibition in the prestigious Upper Waiting Hall of the Houses of Parliament

The event was formally opened by MP Chi Onwurah and attended by 40 energy transition enthusiasts. A big thank you to Durham University's Vice Chancellor Karen O'Brien for thanking Chi Onwurah for hosting us, and to DEI Director Simone Abram for welcoming our international guests from Norway, France, Germany, Canada, and Japan's embassies.

Our exhibition highlighted DEI's cutting-edge socio-technical approach spanning decarbonizing heat, power and transport; developing energy materials and geopolitics; and education, training and outreach. At the core of our work is:

🔬 Innovating with top expertise for clean, just energy systems
🌳 Creating impact through partnership and cooperation
⚡ Influencing creativity and cooperation towards shared goals
👥 Including diverse voices to understand how transitions affect all

We were absolutely thrilled to showcase DEI's incredible work accelerating the inclusive energy revolution on such a prominent stage. Driving this transition requires collaboration across all disciplines, sectors and nations - exactly what this exhibition represented.

Thank you to everyone who made this exhibition possible! The path to a sustainable future is steeper but achievable when we work together. 💚
