We hope this provides a space where you can feel supported by your peers in an informal setting. Sign up to the medics support group mailing list if you are interested in learning more and keeping updated!

Did you know 98% of Junior Doctors voted for strike action in 2023? 👩⚕️🪧👨⚕️
The current strikes are affecting junior doctors across the country. Understanding why they are happening and how they will pave what clinical practise looks like for us as the doctors of the future is so important.
Swipe to find out more about the strikes and what we can do as medical students to show our support 👏 .juniordocs
Thank you so much to everyone who filled out the survey on their WP experiences! I created this survey as I wanted to share my findings and ensure the voices of WP students were heard.
Recommendations were made based on the survey findings and will be advocated for by WPM.
Highlights:
• 53% (n=38) of students rated their support needs as “not at all” met or “ok” when they started medical school (Fig 1.), with Financial & Pastoral Support lowly rated by respondents (Fig 2.)
• Finance (43%, n=31) and work (22%, n=16) have been identified as significant barriers to WP medical students, leading to less time available to study and socialise and an inability to purchase resources (11%, n=8) (Fig 4.)
• 28% (n=20) of students explicitly state a feeling of isolation, loneliness, or imposter syndrome due to their circumstance
• Peer support (42%, n=30) and peer resources (26%, n=19) were highlighted as the most helpful factor in WP student progression throughout medical school (Fig 5.)
Thanks again everyone,
Maha
Did you know 24% of students say they’re less likely to finish their degree as a result of the cost of living crisis? ✍️
Financial worries are amongst a multitude of issues faced by widening participation students during University. These financial difficulties are currently being exacerbated by the rising cost of living.
This is a huge and very current issue many medical students all over the UK are currently facing. Educating on this issue and signposting available help and resources is imperative to ensure widening participation students are supported during the cost of living crisis. 💰🩺

🩺 Did you know only 4% of doctors in the UK come from a working-class background? 🩺
People from Widening Participation backgrounds have to overcome many barriers to access Higher Education.
Our aims as a society are:
1. to support widening participation medical students so their background does not negatively impact upon their experiences
2. to provide a space for medical students from widening participation backgrounds to connect and support each other
