or directly speak to any of the committee members.
Great opportunity being organised by ! Super relevant to lots of 3rd and 4th year courses👀
details for our second creative talk!
(This is also to note the study session scheduled for 23 November will not be going ahead due to this talk)
we hope to see some of you there at either one or both events💫🤎
our creative talk series is finally returning! For those new to the society, it is where we invite an anthropologist to talk to us about their work in whatever format they wish.
This is a great way to learn more about your tutors and lecturers research and dive deeper into your own anthropological interests, or find some new ones
All are welcome to attend and please don't worry if you can't make this one - we have a second talk the day after🥳
starting on Thursday we are bringing our study sessions back😙🤌🏻 come and study with fellow anthro students - this may be helpful if you want to bounce essay ideas off each other, talk about readings etc
if that isn't enough to persuade you, there's always the potential for a pub trip afterwards .... 🥳
bring your laptop, pens, paper and any snacks or drinks - we have lots of sweets left from the activities fair so let's see how fast we can demolish them🫡
please pay attention if more strikes are announced as we will either find a new location or cancel that weeks session in order to avoid crossing picket lines.
Once again, not mandatory to attend and you don't have to stay the whole time!
Looking for student support from other students? Look no further!
We are launching a new student-run, student-based support group called Academic Families. This is a wonderful chance to meet new people within your Social Anthropology year and throughout the different years. It is also a nice way to get help beyond the academic space and in a casual way.
You will be allocated into groups of 4 or 5, with 2 'Guardians', formed of 3rd and/or 4th years, and 2-3 'Children', of 1st and/or 2nd years. Our goal is that each group will be an independent 'family' - you can sort your own activities whether that's study sessions, family dinners etc, its up to you!
We are looking for more third and fourth year sign ups in particular so please share this around!
this is only available for Social Anthropology, both singular and joint degree, and Undergraduate and Postgraduate students, including MSc Medical Anthropology. If this isn't you - don't worry! You're still welcome at all our other events :)
After the success of last week's anthropolotea we are making it a regular event this year!
Feel free to drop by whenever - there's no pressure to come every week or stay the whole time, and don't worry if you can't make it - we will have plenty of other events throughout this semester :)
enjoyed today's pizza social? let's meet again next week!
we will have a chill afternoon drinking tea (or coffee but anthropolocoffee isn't really giving as an event title) at Lady and The Bear, just off the meadows!
this is the perfect way to relax after the first week of term🫠☕️
if you can't make it don't panic! we have planned further events in the coming weeks - keep an eye out🥰
unfortunately due to the heavy rain tomorrow's beach trip will be postponed to later in the term when the weather is better!
we still want to see everyone so will be in CMB with free pizza (although limited so run don't walk!) to see out welcome week. the views are excellent from the top of CMB so although not quite the scenic trip we had planned it will still be a nice time :)
it was so great to meet everyone at the activities fair yesterday so please do come along if you want to chat to us more and meet loads of other people interested in anthro🥳🥳
we have had to cancel tomorrow's portobello event due to the heavy rain forecast - this is our replacement instead! Although not the beach, the views from the top of CMB are stunning so please come along :)
the pizza is free but will be limited so get down early if you want a slice.
we hope this is a relaxing way to end what has been a hectic but incredibly fun welcome week meeting and catching up with you all🫶🏻
⚠️TOMORROW⚠️
As UCU have announced further strike action this month we have decided that we can't let the Principal pull the wool over the eyes of all the new students!
Join us to protest the university's inability to create fair working conditions for staff. We will be meeting at 10.30 at the Meadows Compass, before making our way to McEwan Hall at 11am, when doors open.
Feel free to bring signs and non-anthropology friends - the more of us there are, the more impactful we will be!
(Don't forget our picnic is shortly after this in the Meadows,if you need extra motvation to come)
we will be at the second day of the activities fair next week for the whole 8 hours😵💫😵💫 so please come and chat to us, new and returning students of course welcome
we will post on our stories the location of our table as the fair can be very hectic but remember the first hour is designated as quiet
look forward to seeing you all🥰
we encourage all first year undergrads to attend this talk as its a great way to meet key members of the anthropology department as well as your course mates, and to find out more about what your anthropology degree will look like here at Edinburgh.
After the talk, don't forget to come to our table in the CMB Foyer where you can meet some more of our committee members and learn about the society. We will be at the activities fair the next day but this is a great opportunity to talk to us in a less hectic environment or if you won't be there!
We look forward to meeting you all🫶🏻
Join us for a welcome week picnic in the meadows! Our meeting point, the Meadows Compass, can be found on Google Maps for those new to the city :)
‼️this event has sold out on the EUSA website but if you didn't manage to get a ticket you are still welcome to come along‼️
There will be food provided but feel free to bring along your own.
In the event of bad weather we will stay in the CMB Foyer.
New and returning students welcome

Creative Talks ✨
We are so excited to announce that the second session of Creative Talks will be led by John Harries, senior lecturer and director of undergraduate teaching in social anthropology 🫶🏻
He will be exploring themes related to his paper, on The Stories a Thing Can Tell (or Not)
“This paper is about a small artefact, a harpoon head made of bone, that held in the collections of the British Museum. The object is innocuous, but it is associated with a notorious instance of settler violence towards the Beothuk, a people, thought to be extinct, who were indigenous to the island of Newfoundland.
By working with this object, and, in particular, through the process of making a series of replicas, this paper addresses how we tell stories with things and the ways in which we render things articulate in our story-making strategies. In so doing, we will argue that the storying of things is a material process, indivisible from the agential capacity of things and the material hermeneutics by which we make things knowable and articulate. Given that this object is withdrawn from public view, and intersecting with recent discussions of the capacities of replica and virtual objects to animate conversations about difficult histories, we will particularly attend to the ways in which such objects are made, and, in being made, draw these stories to them (or not).
There will be an (un)real artefact handling session accompanying this presentation.”
So mark your calendar for the 8th of February from 18:30 - 21:00 at 50 George Square G.02!
See you there 🫡

For our first Creative Talk we have Stephanie Tierney ( ) to talk a little about her research on “The Witch is Whom We Need Her to Be: How the Accused Witches of Early Modern Edinburgh Are Remembered by Contemporary People”
“This research project investigates a current movement in memory politics regarding the persecution of witches in early modern Scotland (1400-1800). The study seeks to discover the process of memorialising and remembering the people accused as witches; investigate how histories of witchcraft are rediscovered and reassembled through the lens of the present; and find out who the people spearheading the work are, what their motives and motivations are in carrying out the work, and what role self-identifying witches play.”
