You may not be explicitly aware of it but colour influences your appetite, sleep and body temperature (to name a few), so its important to think about the impact your interior design colour choices could have on your mood.

So, when choosing a paint or wallpaper colour for your home, can you simply choose a colour you like? My top tip is always to start with how you would like a room to make you feel.

Of course you need to take into account practical considerations such as when you use the room, the function of the space and light, but next time you reach for the paint card take into account the psychology of the colour.

Red
Red can give energy so best used in areas such as the dining room to spark conversation.

Pink
Pink is nurturing but doesn’t inspire energy so best avoided in a home office.

Yellow
Of course I love yellow for its feelings of optimism, so it’s good for a dark hallway or sunny breakfast area for a cheery start to the day.

Blue
Blue gives you a sense of calm and serenity, but the wrong shade can feel cold and withdrawn. Avoid in eating spaces as it’s known to supress your appetite.

Green
Green is a good choice for most areas, there is a shade to suit most rooms! Its restorative and harmonious or lighter greens are refreshing and link us to nature. Due to its link with nature, surprisingly it can be seen as a neutral colour in rooms with large windows/ doors to gardens.

My client asked me to create a home office that she loved to spend time in. This Emma Shipley wallpaper hits the mark perfectly for a backdrop that's sure to spark ideas and conversation! Paired with Farrow and Ball Strong White, a calming pink sofa and white-washed desk, this is the home office of dreams.

Taking the first step from a home with neutral tones to a more colourful palette can be daunting.

Through my colour consultancy service, which covers 3 rooms, I helped my clients move away from the dated magnolia walls and inject some personality into their home.

We selected:
Farrow & Ball Card Room Green for their hallway
Adventurer from Little Greene for their living-room

Message me if you would like me to show you how to be braver with colour and update your home this Autumn.

What are your interior challenges this month?
Perhaps an open plan space that seems like a daunting prospect, a living-room that needs an injection of personality or a hallway that needs some love?
This month I have been working with clients on all 3 of these challenges.
Quite often my clients struggle to know where to start.
My advice is always to consider with how you would like the space to make you feel.
A living-room that is used as a space to chill in the evenings should be a relaxing area whereas you may want to feel more invigorating and alert in a hallway.
This will naturally draw you towards certain colours which can be a great place to start when building up a room.

5 Interior Design Mistakes Not To Make

When updating your home it’s easy to get sidetracked by colour and wallpaper. Whilst these can be a great place to start, here are my 5 top tips to avoid making costly mistakes
1.
When choosing a rug, if in doubt always go bigger. Ideally your furniture should sit on top of it.
2.
Take into account of furniture box size when ordering larger pieces. Even if the table fits in your room, if the box doesn’t fit through your doorway, it’s not going to work.
3.
Accent walls. Unless properly considered they can throw a room off balance. Choose a colour and commit! Or you could try new colour blocking/ panelling if you would like 2 tones.
4. Hang your artwork lower. The middle of the picture should be eye level.
5. Employ an interior designer earlier in the project. Believe me, it’s more cost effective to pay a designer than to replace and re-do.

Monday Mood
This Monday I’m designing an initial concept board for my new client which is bringing me joy.
Whether you are picking out bright pops of colour or more muted tones, remember to keep in mind the rest of your house. For a hallway, remember a darker hallway will make other rooms feel lighter - and vice versa. If you are looking to make your living room feel lighter, a dark hallway can be a good way to go.

Did anyone else see the post from about blackened pink paint?
I have been looking for this exact colour for my 8 year old daughter’s bedroom and found an archived Paint, Sugared Almond, which fits the bill perfectly.
Paired with yellow accessories like this lamp, I think it’s a great new look for a child’s bedroom.
Anyone else tried a blackened pink paint? I’d love to see the results!

Very Peri is the colour of the year. Pantone say it’s blue with a hint of red.. does that not make purple??
Vibrant purple is not for everyone but I love their Amusements colour palette for a child’s bedroom. Accent wall in Very Peri with a cool grey on the other walls with green/blue, pinky red and warm yellow for accessories.
What do you think? Do you like Very Peri? Would you use it in your home?
