Lightning Pest Specialists
A family-run pest control business with nearly a decade's experience preventing and resolving pest problems throughout Edinburgh and the Lothians.
We keep our prices low without sacrificing the quality of our service.
It's not just France that are inundated with bedbugs! I've certainly seen more than my fair share in recent times. This particular case had gotten out of control, but you can see plenty of tell-tale signs of bedbug spotting in all the likely harbouring areas.
Don't let the bedbugs bite! Call Lightning Pest Specialists for a swift response and effective treatment.
This wet weather doesn't seem to want to let up and I'm finding that the rodents are seeking shelter during this monsoon season, so if you hear any scratching in the walls or loft space, chances are you have an unwelcome visitor.
One of the first bits of advice during a rodent treatment is to remove food sources as this will attract vermin. In this picture of a customers garden, what appears to be gravel in their garden turned out to be a full sack of bird seed strewn on the ground. This was just one of 3 areas in their garden providing an all-you-can-eat buffet for anything passing by.
It comes as no surprise that rats were making good use of this abundance of food.
The wasp season has well and truly begun, so keep your eyes peeled for them. Already had a few gardeners getting stung when trimming hedges, builders landscaping gardens and ripping through the subterranean nests, and plenty getting into the loft spaces just now. Getting them treated early is the best course of action as the number will be lower and there will be no potential juvenile queens to possibly return in future years.
This job certainly gets me to many unique places. Here I am standing in front of a tree planted by the lover (David Rizzio) of Mary Queen of Scots as a gift to her, making it a whopping 450 years old!
Out and about saving the bees again. These guys have taken up residence in a bird box which was easily removed and relocated to somewhere less obstructive and a better surrounding environment for them to feed/pollinate.
Massive thanks to one of my customers for kindly letting me use their land (they had an empty bee hotel already, so this is a cheating way of getting bees!)
I've been plugging away, keeping the rodents at bay these last few months! However, a milestone was hit in the last couple of weeks, which was celebrated in style with a lovely gammon roast... it has now been a full year since setting up the business, and I would like to thank my family for their support and all the customers that have put their faith in me to rid them of their problems.
Here's to many years to come.
Cheers to you all!
Looks like a rat may have been trying to audition for the ratatouille sequel and trying it's paw at baking.
After nibbling through the back of a kitchen cupboard it had then dragged all of the cupcake cases behind the kickboards along with a few packets of chocolate nibbles.
Things you don't expect to find when you open your cupboard! If you have any concerns, don't hesitate to get in contact.
When the rats have been living in your shed and not only chewed your favourite gardening gloves, but also found the slug pellets rather tasty (and turned their droppings blue!). The cold weather means that rodents are seeking refuge to stay warm. An easy area is under decking/sheds or even in the loft above. If you have any concerns about any scratching noises that weren't there before, give Lightning Pest Specialists a call to arrange a survey/treatment.
It always makes me happy when I see a glowing review or recommendation for Lightning Pest Specialists, but a bottle of wine as a thank you for a job well done is also much appreciated!
Here's to another successful year ahead 🍷
Part 2: A belated end to the story of a wasps life cycle. Certainly seeing a lot less insects now the temperature is dropping. Once the clocks go back, you may be surprised to find a few visitors coming through the light fittings if a nest has been missed throughout the year. If you are finding this to be an issue then send me a message and I will sort the problem out for you.
Part 1: A sneak peak into the life cycle of a wasp.
Needed a new batch of business cards, so it was time to update them with the new qualification.
Their newly installed CCTV didn't help these wasps as I came at them from their blind angle! Still getting plenty of wasp callouts each day but soon you might see them invading your home when the nights get darker and we switch our lights on earlier. Insects tend to be drawn towards the light so each year over the next month or so, they can be found squeezing through the light fittings and found looking drowsy on the window sills. If you have started to see more than your fair share and think you have a problem then get in touch and I'll sort the problem out for you.

Bad day to be a plumber! Cracking wasp nest today. A decent size but not my biggest!
There are some grim scenes on the streets of Edinburgh at the moment with the current council strike action combined with higher footfall during the festival. This will certainly have a knock on effect of increased rodent issues as there is an abundance of food now available to them.
If you think you may have a problem then please get in contact for a lightning fast response and solution.

When the customer insists on giving you an ice cream, it would be rude to say no in this gorgeous weather!
It's not just us that like the warm weather though, the insects are out in greater numbers too. Keep your eyes peeled during your sun bathing and BBQs in case you have a problem that needs dealing with.
Another day of annoying the wasps... the nests just keep getting bigger.
They love a slate roof to gain entry into your loft. Not only does the black slate absorb the heat and help keep them warm, but every individual overlap of each slate can allow the wasps entry into your loft.
Keep checking your roof on the sunny days for any signs of activity and give me a shout to come sort it out for you.

It's amazing to see things under a microscope for a change!
Had a call out for "hundreds of wee beasties crawling on the ceiling" which led me to discover these psocids (or booklice is the more common name). They'd found a bag of mouldy bird food and had infested the room.
A simple case of finding/removing the food source, cleaning the area and giving some advice to the customer. Not all jobs require the big guns to remove the issue, sometimes a little advice is all that is required.
If you have a creepy crawly you're unsure about just give me a call.

We pride ourselves at Lightning Pest Specialists at being the best at what we do, so I'm delighted to announce that I can call myself a newly certified Field Biologist. It has been a long road to get there, especially having to learn the Latin names of bugs, but there are no more rungs to climb on the pest control ladder and hopefully no more exams in my near future!
If you have any pest problems, then look no further for a highly qualified pest controller.

Just your friendly neighbourhood spider waiting on his next meal. Very active nest as the workers continue to build the nest in size. If you spot any wasps flying in and out of your property then the chances are high that there's a nest inside. Just give us a call to get it sorted for you.
Flying ants have been seen out in force. Had a call out to a bathroom completely covered in them today, they tend to head to the nearest light source usually the window but here they were swarming the light fitting.
The large winged ants are juvenile queens that are leaving the nest and trying to find a new area to colonise. The smaller winged ones are the males which will mate on the wing so that the female can start a new nest wherever she lands.

KNOCK KNOCK!
Here's one visitor you don't want at your door. Lucky escape by the customer, if they had opened the door, the nest would have split and caused who knows how many stings 😲
If you spot a wasps nest or see them going into your home, give me a call and I'll get rid of them for you.

Clothes moths are still a scourge these days although you don't hear very much about them. Their larvae can do a lot of damage to fabrics, especially the more expensive varieties such as cashmere and 100% wool which is what they prefer to eat. If you notice the little mustard coloured moths sitting on your wall, bald patches appearing on your capets or holes in your clothes it is time to take action. Call Lightning Pest Specialists for a survey and we'll provide all the necessary information and treatments to rid you of your problem.

Prior to removal from the customers garden, here is the (almost) end result while I wait for the bees to settle. Had my first couple of wasp jobs come through so keep your eyes peeled for any activity on the nice, warm days and give me a shout if you have any issues.
Yet another bee relocation from Lightning Pest Specialists. Here's a nest of eggs and the bees working hard to maintain them. Found under a garden storage container, I managed to dig them out of the ground and relocate. Video to follow soon...
Another bee relocation to try and save what I can. These guys had started nesting in the insolation above a customers garage door. Every time it was opened or closed the vibrations would disturb the nest stirring them up and causing a lot of angry bees. Most of the time bees are very sedate and just go about their business but if they feel their nest is under attack then their natural response is to sting.
EDIT: I should point out it is the neighbours cats favourite pooping spot NOT the neighbours themselves! 🤣
Seeing a lot of bees giving each other piggy backs at the moment. These guys are tree bees and they get mistaken for wasps buzzing around the eaves. You will see a little "swarm" of males hanging around outside waiting for a female to emerge, they hop on when they get the chance and the female can't carry the extra weight and usually descends to the ground. These guys are pretty harmless but if you need me to pop out and identify the species or are worried about any nests you might have, just send Lightning Pest Specialists a message.
A successful bee relocation on another gorgeous day! It's not always bird's that take up residence in your garden boxes so if you have something buzzing in there that you need removing, give us a call. We will always attempt to rehome a nest of bees. Whether it's shovelled into a shoe box if they're living in a compost bin, or in this instance removing the bird box entirely with little disturbance to the residents. Hopefully the bees like their new home!
Just because the weather is getting warmer doesn't mean the rodents are letting up. Here you can see the damage done entering the brickwork outside and then chewing their way through to an under stairs cupboard. Call or drop us a message if you are hearing things go bump (or scratch) in the night.
Wasp season has officially begun when I get my annual queen nest appearing in my shed (they should know better by now!). The numbers will only increase as it gets warmer so they shouldn't be too difficult to spot if you have a troublesome nest. Give me a buzz (sorry) and ill soon have them sorted out for you.
The flyering campaign began in earnest last week... thankfully my dad came to visit and help out. Many hands make light work but try telling that to my feet after all the miles we walked!
