56three
We are a design led Architectural practice, based in Edinburgh and working across Europe.
56three met last night to play the mighty Etive Consulting Engineers Limited at the historic World Of Football for our debut 5-a-side football match. Led by our sport hungry Nathan Johnson, it was a great way to break free from the desks and bring our creativity to the pitch.
Do get in touch with Nathan Johnson if your team are interested in assembling a squad as we intend to grow this across the property and construction sector for regular matches.
National and International challenges will be considered - preferably in cities we are currently working in!
56three are delighted to share these interior photos from the recently completed refurbishment of 59 Studio Apartments at South Bridge, Edinburgh. We have developed this new interior designed product with Empiric Student Property plc for Post Graduate offering.
Located within a listed building in the heart of the city, whilst boasting high ceilings and some remnants of period charm, these apartments were desperately in need of a complete overhaul. Designed with Post Grad students in mind, we worked closely with client Student Property, and delivery partner Clark Contracts, to create studio apartments that now offer the ultimate combination of comfort, style, and elegance, within a heritage setting.

56three are delighted to have submitted planning on behalf of our client for a mixed-use development on Villiers Square, Douglas, in the Isle of Man. The proposal includes a landmark office building extending to over 80,000ft², significant retail and leisure space together with an 80-key hotel, all centred around a public square.
The dynamic design infills a longstanding gap site and repairs the fragmented elevation along Loch Promenade, providing enhanced public realm in the heart of Douglas, connecting key routes and improving navigation in the city centre.
The proposals seek to encourage the growth of businesses on the Isle of Man as well as a demand for hotel accomodation to support ever-growing tourism whilst increasing the retail offering on Loch Promenade.

56three were recently back in Stirling to revisit the Riverside Quay student development. This 209-bedroom residence opened its doors to students 4 years ago this month, as the first building to be delivered as part of a wider masterplan for the Forthside area. The development featured a lower plinth block alongside the main building to preserve views to the Wallace Monument.
In some ways a trail blazer for as it marked the first true purpose-built student accommodation in the city and has been followed by several developments in the city, including our own Carters Yard.
Thanks to our Gordon Beaton for the photo.

Here’s what is driving us to support this charity. It changes lives!
"Before The Polar Academy, I hated school and saw it as a mere legal obligation, resulting in less than 80% attendance. I also struggled with physical fitness and obesity, crushing my confidence. However, since participating in The Polar Academy my attendance has increased to almost 100%. Now, I'm pursuing an engineering degree at university, a goal once unimaginable. The program taught me that I can achieve anything. I've also developed a love for hiking, camping, and fitness, shedding 17kg through a healthier lifestyle and consistent gym visits".
Blair MacDougall, 2022 Polar Academy graduate.

Given what the youngsters from The Polar Academy do in preparation for their trip to , a few of us set off to experience pulling some weight with the harnesses they use in training. Off to near Granton, we went. The sand and rocks collecting inside the tyre as we pulled it across the bay added an extra challenge!
We now have a very small insight into the mental and physical journeys these youngsters must experience to take on this inspiring challenge.
15 of us are taking part in the Kiltwalk on the 17th Sept to raise funds to support this life changing charity. We would welcome donations big and small, everything counts.
Of course all done under the watchful eye of 'Boss Dog' aka Flump!

Our chosen charity for 2023 is The Polar Academy. They have worked with 150 young people and their families directly to date, impacting over 90,000 members of the community annually. The data they have collated since they started speaks for itself.
They are a charity who work with 13-18 year olds with mental health challenges or lacking in self-esteem and confidence. They give them an intensive one year physical and mental training programme culminating in a winter sledge hauling expedition in , which changes the mindset of the young people as well as their families, schools, communities and positively impacts the local community.
The children and the families are supported from the moment they join the programme to its completion and often beyond their adolescence.
It changes lives!
In the run up to our Kiltwalk on 17 September, we will be taking part in additional training similar to that of the Polar Academy students - more news (and pictures) to follow.
Only 29 days to go!
To help support the The Polar Academy ongoing financial requirements to fund expeditions for these youngsters, we would be hugely grateful for any contribution, small or large, to reach our fundraising target of £5000, via the Just Giving link below.

Tomorrow marks the first day of the 2023 Edinburgh International Book Festival the world’s largest celebration of the written word, hosted in the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature.
Our small contribution to Edinburgh’s literary scene took place in the wonderful The Edinburgh Bookshop when we replanned the store to double the number of books on display, whilst creating a quiet reading space predominantly used by the younger customers!
A sliding ladder and rail provides access to the books which are out of reach, and in an inspired move, all visiting authors and illustrators are encouraged to sign or draw on the ladder in a celebration of creativity, creating a unique feature in a truly marvellous bookshop.
56three are heading down to today to attend the Michelmores Property Awards 2023. had the pleasure of welcoming several 5th year students from Erskine Stewart's Melville Schools into the office over the last couple of weeks as part of their ongoing work experience placements.
All students rose to the design challenge we set them, creating some wonderful building ideas that they had fun developing from sketches into 3D models.
Future Architects in the making!
56three are delighted to announce the recent completion of Huxley Studios, our 102-bed purpose-built student accommodation scheme for and Student at Stanley Place in Edinburgh.
Reworking the acquired consent for 93 beds within the existing footprint, provided an additional 9 beds along with increasing the ground floor amenity offer: consisting of open plan lounge, reception, private dining, and gym.
With a challenging strip of land located between residential streets and the main east coast railway line out of Edinburgh, the building addresses the accommodation to the residential street, with access corridors and communal spaces providing a buffer to the railway line.

A number of the team at went for a lunchtime Wellbeing Wander yesterday in the , litter picking on several streets close to the office. We took full advantage of time away from screens and phones, enjoying a natter with colleagues and local residents.
There were certainly some interesting finds, but moreover, we were astonished at the amount of construction debris we were collecting - nails, zip ties, pieces of foam insulation and even a Stanley knife blade. Now our streets are a little safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.
are making this a regular activity and all are welcome to join.

travelled from 56°N 3°W to 63°N 22°W last week on a fact-finding mission for an immensely exciting project. The diverse landscape was both familiar and alien, providing great design inspiration for what will be an iconic development.
Watch this space!
With World Heritage Day and Earth Day falling on the same week, reflect on our responsibilities as designers to ensure the diversity of cultural and natural heritage is preserved and that we work towards a green, prosperous, and equitable future.
Through careful planning and clever detailing, it is possible to marry these challenges into our designs - restoring both heritage buildings and ecosystem connectivity in cities and surrounding areas, through refurbishment and reuse of existing buildings with consideration for natural habitat expansion, reinstatement, and investment.
56three recently submitted design proposals in the design competition for a new education and visitors centre at their Loch Lomond nature reserve.
The design is a composition of two timber volumes set on a raised plinth to limit environmental impact. A palette of natural materials were selected blending into Loch Lomond National Park’s outstanding natural beauty.
Key to our submission was celebrating the RSPB’s important work in protection of the natural world.

We had a great day on Friday as the team came together for our Quarterly meeting. It was a fun afternoon, reflecting on another busy year and reviewing future opportunities.
The management team discussed topics on Core Values, ESG standards and networking skills, followed by wonderful presentations from our Interior Design and Conservation teams.
The day ended with a table-top ping pong competition, as we enjoyed a drink (or two) and outstanding food prepared by Relish Edinburgh https://lnkd.in/eNP4YYQX and branded cupcakes by Just so Sweet https://lnkd.in/eR-c82pA
A terrific way to conclude the week!

We are delighted to introduce Johnson and Midwood to the team.
Nathan joins us as a Part 2 with nearly two years’ experience in large scale masterplans and urban placemaking. He has developed a keen interest in community architecture and how to reimagine the unsustainable high street.
Connor joins us as an Architectural Technician having completed his Masters of Science degree in Advanced Architectural Design at The Robert Gordon University in 2022. He has a particular enthusiasm for technical detailing and sustainable forms of architecture, having gained experience in the delivery of Cross Laminated Timber Kit homes.
This month the team at 56three are celebrating our third birthday as a rebranded company, having originated 20 years ago this year!
The name is taken directly from our location in central Edinburgh, 56°N 3°W. From this location we operate across the length and breadth of the UK, with an increasing overseas workload.
We are proud of our company’s beginnings and even more proud of our team’s more recent achievements. In the past 3 years our turnover and employee count has increased by over 50% and we believe our team feel part of something more than just a day job.
56three have gained planning consent for a change of use to the former Border Telegraph printworks in Galashiels! The derelict warehouses will be refitted to provide flexible workspace options for local businesses whilst refurbishing the frontage to restore active use to the High Street. The works will help to reinvigorate the town centre and support the local economy.
56three are delighted to be recognised at #24 on this year’s Urban Realm Ltd Top 100 architectural practices in Scotland! This is an improved ranking on last year’s position and with our expanding workload we hope to continue that trajectory with a push in to the top 20 next year. It feels like a great start to 2023 with some hugely exciting projects about to take off and a busy pipeline for the year ahead.
At the end of 2022 Gordon Beaton and Alex Oliver took part in a Women in Property Scotland event introducing P1 and 2 pupils at South Queensferry Primary School to Architecture. We worked with each class over the course of the morning to plan and build a town from LEGO and folded paper. We provided a helping hand with sticky tape and folding giving the kids free design rein. The results ranged from classic picket fence cottages to monolithic black masterpieces.
Thanks to Laura Banks from for organising.
