Super Excited to be hosting Jessica Crisp's Solo show Saturday 21st Aug - Sunday 29th August Join us for this poetry reading by Samuel Tongue, surrounded by Jessica's suspended silks. 4.30 - 5.30 pm Sign up below to come to opening reading
Jessica's exibition displays 20 dyed, printed and hemmed squares of silk. Each piece dyed from gathered plant material and overlaid with screen printed text and drawing. Jessica has been working with botanical printing and dyeing with silk and paper, as a way of continuing her print practice during successive lockdowns. She gathered plants on walks around Edinburgh, and her dad posted Eucalyptus and Cotinus from the Highlands. She then makes an iron rich solution from rusty nails, soaks silk in the solution, and winds the silk around interleaved petals and leaves before steaming the bundles for hours in a tea urn. During the steaming process the iron and the tannins in the plant material react to leave light fast impressions on the silk.
Samuel Tongue is a widely published Poet, born in Bath and grew up on a pig farm in South Wales. After completing an English degree and a Masters in Creative Writing at Exeter University, he ventured briefly into ministerial training for the Anglican Church in Wales. In 2008 he moved to Glasgow and began a Phd in Literature, Theology and the Arts. His research at Glasgow University focused on poetic retellings of ‘Jacob wrestling the angel’ (Genesis 32:22-32), analysing the life of biblical stories in contemporary culture.
