Edinburgh University’s biggest musical theatre society
Founded in 1989, Edinburgh University Footlights is a student-run musical theatre group that aims to annually present the one of the largest scale production of the University's theatrical calendar and run a multi-talented showchoir. Over the years, Footlights has gone from strength to strength, with The Edinburgh Evening News dubbing the society "one of the most respected theatre groups in Britain".
Footlights aims to give its entire cast and crew as professional an experience as possible while providing an accessible and affordable performance for the student body as well as the Edinburgh community at large.
The society's greatest initial artistic success was in its 1994 production of 'Moby Dick'; the only amateur performance of the musical, and licensed by Cameron Mackintosh himself as well as performing the Scottish debut of 'In the Heights'. The Show took on the production of 'Fame The Musical' this year, producing a 5 star show-stopping performance, with the Edinburgh Guide describing Fame “a professional level show at amateur prices”.
Showchoir is an exciting performance group formed in 2011 which has gone from strength to strength ever since. The choir performs at a number of events throughout the year both in and outside the University. Following the success of "West-End Nights" in 2016, The Showchoir's production of "A Step In Time", was a five-star huge sell-out success. Our most recent production of 'Encore' was our most ambitious show yet.
