The Official page of one of the largest and most active Philosophy Societies in the UK!
Founded in 1871, Philosophy Society is a lively and active academic society which aims to promote the study of philosophy throughout the University of Ednburgh. We run four events every week including guest lectures, discussion groups and reading groups, as well as copious socials and academic support sessions. We maintain a society library in the Dugald Stewart building and are in the process of
Our first proceedings event is tonight at 6pm in 9.18 40 George Square! It’s on the Extended Mind.
Ritvik’s Abstract:
The hypothesis of extended cognition (HEC) argues that some mental states can be realised through interactions between the brain and the outside world, extending beyond the ‘boundaries of skin and skull.’ (Clark & Chalmers, 1998) In this essay, I analyse arguments in favour and in opposition to HEC, (Kirsh & Maglio, 1994) (Rupert, 2004) (Sprevak, 2009) and why they fail or succeed. I argue that Sprevak is correct in identifying the radical form of HEC entailed by functionalism, but his reasons for rejecting it are insufficient, and develop a conception of a ‘radical’ HEC that may be more plausible than it initially seems.
L’enfer, c’est les autres!

This week’s discussion group will be held in Brewhemia at 7pm on monday the 29th. We’ll be talking freedom, it’s political implementation, and personal importance.
PPLS are hosting a series of catered drop-in forums for underrepresented groups in the department so if you are an international student, in widening participation, or neurodivergent we would love to see you there!
From the whole philsoc committee, thank you all for a wonderful semester! We hope to see you in January as we continue on with our regular events. Until then remember that submissions for our journal, Pense, are open.
27/11 at 19:00 at Brewhemia.
The gift of giving: the ethics of altruism and charity. Once after Halloween the streets are infested with the brewing anticipations of exchanges of gifts and donations of sorts. Besides waiting for gifts with bated breath, one should not lose sight of the debates and ideas of gifts and charity. What is our motivation? What is more effective charity? How does morality implicate the process? We are not Christmas’s party-pooper, but best that we figure out how to gift properly before getting on the naughty list. So join us at Brewhemia on Monday, and please bring your gifts of tongue to the discussion group.
This Sunday (12/11) at 19:00, we’re embracing our age with a night of wine, various nibbles, and crafts. So bring a bottle, some snacks to the Cross-Coursier and get cracking on with whatever it is you’re planning to make before finals hit.
P.S.
Don’t you think it’s weird we give old people the same activities as primary school children? Cut and stick, knitting, dance-themed exercises, quizzes etc
Join us watching the Bonfire Night (05/11) fireworks from Calton Hill! It'll be quite chilly so remember to bring supplies.
We'll be meeting at 18:00 at the Dugald Stewart Monument, and we'll also have a complimentary dunce cap for anyone who goes to the Dugald Stewart Building.
***VENUE CHANGE & SPEAKER ABSTRACTS & TICKET RELEASE***
